Summary

We are looking for an experienced Proxmox, Linux and virtualization engineer to configure my local workstation as a secure remote processing server for my team. The final setup must include a persistent Ubuntu virtual machine with a graphical desktop environment, full NVIDIA GPU access and secure remote access from outside my local network. Current workstation • AMD Ryzen 9 9950X • 16 physical cores and 32 threads • 96 GB RAM • NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti with 16 GB VRAM • NVMe SSD storage • HDD storage • Wired internet connection • Windows 11 is currently installed Required architecture Preferred solution: • Proxmox VE installed as the bare-metal hypervisor • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS virtual machine • Ubuntu graphical desktop environment • Full PCIe passthrough of the NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti • AMD integrated GPU used by the Proxmox host where required • Secure remote access without exposing public SSH or remote desktop ports Ubuntu VM resources • 24 vCPU threads • 64 GB RAM • 1 TB dedicated SSD storage • 2 TB dedicated HDD storage • Full RTX 5070 Ti GPU • Full 16 GB GPU VRAM • Bridged network connection • Automatic VM startup after the physical computer starts • Automatic recovery after an unexpected shutdown where possible Remote access requirements The Ubuntu VM must be securely accessible from outside the local network. Required access methods: • Graphical remote desktop • SSH • SFTP or another simple file-transfer method • VS Code Remote SSH support • Secure access through Tailscale, WireGuard or an equivalent private network • Individual user accounts for team members • No directly exposed SSH, VNC or remote desktop ports For the graphical connection, please configure and test one reliable solution such as: • RustDesk over Tailscale • NoMachine over Tailscale • Sunshine and Moonlight • Another suitable low-latency Linux remote desktop solution Internet and network requirements The VM must use a bridged network connection and achieve near-native internet speed. The expected result is at least 90 percent of the host computer’s measured download and upload speed when the host network is otherwise idle. Please perform and document: • Host internet speed test • Ubuntu VM internet speed test • Local network throughput test • Remote connection test from an external network • Network latency test Proxmox uses bridged networking, which connects the VM to the physical network in a similar way to a separate physical computer. The VM still shares the physical internet connection with the host and other devices, so simultaneous traffic will reduce available bandwidth. Software configuration Please install and configure: • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS • Ubuntu desktop environment • Current compatible NVIDIA driver • CUDA Toolkit • Docker Engine • NVIDIA Container Toolkit • OpenSSH Server • Git • Python development environment • Basic monitoring tools • Tailscale or an agreed secure VPN solution • Remote desktop software Required validation The project will be considered complete when all of the following work: • The physical computer boots into Proxmox without manual intervention • The Ubuntu VM starts automatically • Ubuntu detects 24 vCPU threads • Ubuntu detects 64 GB RAM • Ubuntu has access to the assigned 1 TB SSD and 2 TB HDD • nvidia-smi detects the RTX 5070 Ti • The VM has access to the full 16 GB VRAM • A CUDA workload runs successfully • A Docker container can access the GPU • A remote user connects to the Ubuntu GUI from another network • SSH and file transfer work through the private network • Internet speed is close to the host’s measured speed • The VM remains functional after a full shutdown and restart • The host and VM are protected by appropriate firewall rules • No unnecessary ports are exposed to the public internet Documentation and handover The freelancer must provide: • Complete installation documentation • VM configuration summary • Storage layout • Network configuration • GPU passthrough configuration • User-management instructions • Instructions for adding and removing remote users • Instructions for starting, stopping and restarting the VM • Backup and restore instructions • Basic troubleshooting guide • One remote handover session Important safety requirement The freelancer must first review the motherboard, BIOS, IOMMU groups, storage layout and current Windows installation. No disk formatting or operating-system replacement should be performed before: • The final architecture is approved • All important files are backed up • The recovery procedure is confirmed • The Windows migration or removal plan is approved
