Elance US Employment Report: 50,000 New Jobs Created in September with Number of Freelancers Receiving Paychecks Up 50 Percent MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – October 4, 2013 – Elance, the leading online work marketplace, today released its September U.S. Employment Report which shows 50,000 new freelance jobs were created and more than 32,000 new workers joined the marketplace looking for work. Nearly one-third of the U.S. workforce is considered independent, a category not captured by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), with the proportion expected to exceed 40 percent of all U.S. workers by 2020. Job growth continues to be robust with the number of freelancers hired on Elance up 51 percent compared to the same period last year; while the number of companies hiring and paying freelancers is up 37 percent. This employment report is derived from Elance hiring and payment data for the U.S. in September and measures the number of new jobs created, the number of people looking for work, and state-level data on hiring and wage growth.
