How To Write ChatGPT Prompts (Plus 115 Prompts To Use Right Now)
Not all ChatGPT prompts are created equal. Read this article to learn how to create an effective ChatGPT prompt—with examples.

Whether you're using ChatGPT to support your work as a freelancer or you’ve fully integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into your business, one thing is constant: You need to know how to write an effective prompt.
This comprehensive guide to ChatGPT prompts will help you take full advantage of ChatGPT’s natural language processing (NLP)—and its machine learning abilities—to interpret text, audio, and video. We've even included over 100 AI prompt templates to get you started.
These are all text-based prompts, so you can also try using them with other AI models like those that power Google’s Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude. Feel free to translate these English prompts into other languages, too; ChatGPT supports over 80!
What is a ChatGPT prompt?
A ChatGPT prompt is a phrase, sentence, or string of sentences that gives the AI tool clear instructions about what you want it to do. There’s a catch, though: What you consider to be clear instructions might not be clear to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is powered by a large language model (LLM) that uses NLP. It’s a software program that can interpret and replicate conversational inputs because it’s been trained on internet content written by people. But even though the LLM can produce a response that sounds reasonably human, you can’t give it instructions in the same way you would a human colleague.
Tip: If you’re using GPT-o1, you can see every step that the AI took to arrive at its answer. This is helpful for learning how the AI processes prompts and delivers outputs.
What makes a ChatGPT prompt good?
A good prompt is clear, specific, and includes context about the task or question you want to generate an output for. This can involve using specific words and phrases, uploading a PDF or pasting text into your chat, and using ChatGPT’s memory feature to string together multiple requests.
10 Tips for writing ChatGPT prompts that work
Preparation is one of the most reliable ways to develop the best ChatGPT prompts. Before you begin chatting with the AI, think about:
- What you’d like to achieve
- What points of view you’d like to learn more about
- What, if any, starting information you have for this project or request
- What you do and don’t like in terms of similar projects or results (i.e. email subject lines that have worked well for your marketing team in the past … and ones that haven’t)
- The kind of person or expert who could potentially help you with this task if you had access to them
- Any specific target audience or potential customers you want the AI generated response to focus on
From there, work through the 10 tips below to improve your ChatGPT prompt writing abilities—and as a result, the AI’s outputs.
1. Define your audience and goals
The more context you can provide in your prompt, the better—and this includes who might read ChatGPT's responses. For example, if you use ChatGPT to outline a blog post, be sure to put details about your typical reader in the prompt.
2. Specify length and format
Your prompt should include instructions on how you'd like to receive each output. Do you want lists? A code block? A table? 500 words of text? ChatGPT can produce all of these, and more. The AI can also edit existing files like images and re-export them back to you.
3. Give ChatGPT background information
Want ChatGPT to pull information from specific sources? It can do that! Paste text and URLs—and even upload whole documents—during your conversation with ChatGPT. You can even ask ChatGPT to store information in the AI chatbot’s memory.
4. Provide step-by-step examples and preferences
Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are great at replicating tones of voice, formats, and more. By providing in your prompt specific examples of what you do and don't like, you can get closer to your ideal output.
5. Reference other chats
You can ask the AI to refer back to previous responses. One of my favorite ways to use this ability is by asking it to compile everything it's given me over the last X number of responses into one long answer I can copy—it makes exporting answers easy and cohesive.
6. Assign ChatGPT a role to play
You can prompt ChatGPT to take on different personas, such as acting like a doctor or replying in Elvis's voice. This way, if you can’t actually talk to your ideal expert on a topic, you can simulate a similar conversation with ChatGPT. While asking ChatGPT to pretend it's a scientist won't make it an actual expert in all things biology, it can help to tailor the AI-generated content to align more closely with specific topics and audiences.
7. Use another AI to help you
You can actually use ChatGPT or another generative AI tool to help you build a prompt, too. Just start a second chat and ask the AI to role play as a prompt engineer, evaluate your earlier prompts for you, or give you tips for prompts related to your specific needs. You can also try using a tool like the prompt generator found in Anthropic’s Claude console. (The prompts will work with ChatGPT!)
8. Refine, regenerate, iterate, and follow up
As fast as ChatGPT may be, working with it still requires patience. Expect several rounds of refining your prompts and its AI-generated responses until you land on the right combination of details and words. You can also point out ChatGPT errors and ask it to correct its output.
9. Build a custom GPT
You can build custom GPTs that carry out specific actions. For example, if you regularly need to turn a topic into social media captions, you can train a GPT on your brand's style and tone of voice—then ask it to carry out this one task over and over again for you.
10. Build a personal prompt library
As you begin to find prompts that work well for your needs, save them! Paste your prompts into a spreadsheet or document and return to them as needed. You may find that you can tweak your existing prompts to fit new use cases, too.
Good ChatGPT prompts to use
Before you get started, remember—all AI tools, paid or not, can sometimes "hallucinate," or make up information that isn't factually correct. Even though ChatGPT now has a built-in search engine, you’ll still want to double-check any outputs before including them in your work.
Also be aware that when you submit information, like code, into ChatGPT's web interface or app, what you input can be used by OpenAI to further train their large language model (LLM).
Once you're comfortable with the level of information you're sharing, though, and are ready to validate your responses, it's time to experiment! Give these original prompts a try and see how they can spark your creativity or speed up some parts of your workday. Simply replace the text in brackets with your own custom details and paste the result into ChatGPT to get started.
