Learn how to create a strong portfolio on Upwork to win more clients and projects. Showcase your skills and experience effectively to stand out and attract more opportunities.

A strong portfolio is one of the most important parts of your Upwork profile. Showcasing your best and most relevant work gives clients a clear understanding of your skills and helps build trust from the start. A well-curated portfolio also gives clients confidence that you can deliver the level of quality they’re looking for. Highlight the work you're proudest of, no matter what form it takes.
We'll dive into how to create a portfolio on Upwork and reveal some best practices and tips for success:
What is an Upwork portfolio?
Think of your portfolio as a highlight reel for your career, with your best work on display. Clients like to see samples of a freelancer’s work before interviewing or sending an offer. Your portfolio can help you stand out and win more projects and job invites. Show clients the projects you’re proudest to showcase.
Portfolios are equally as important for showcasing technical skills as they are for demonstrating creative prowess. Upwork portfolios were designed with a wide range of skills and categories in mind. You can add different types of media, from static images and documents to video and audio, to showcase your project.
If your portfolio item was from an Upwork project, you can link it and display the client feedback and rating.
Once you've completed your portfolio, you'll have a separate portfolio URL so you can send it directly to potential clients. This also makes it easier for clients to refer you to their colleagues.
Benefits of having a portfolio
Clients use freelancers’ portfolios to evaluate whether they're a good fit for their projects. New freelancers who don't have a portfolio and samples of their work may seem like riskier options. Clients may choose to send job invites and interview other talent with portfolios first.
A strong, visual portfolio lends you credibility, especially when you're new to freelancing. Until you’ve built up positive feedback from past clients on your profile, clients often rely heavily on your portfolio to determine if your skill level and work quality match your profile and proposal.
“Often, when a potential client reaches out to me, they send me screenshots of pieces from my portfolio. So it's a really good reference for them and also for me to understand what they want, as I also work in different styles.”
— Adriana Danaila, Top Rated illustrator
Depending on your skill focus, your portfolio may be important for showing off your specific style and niche. If you work in a creative field like animation or graphic design, you may have a style that you've made your own. These work samples can help clients determine whether your style matches their needs.
Portfolios are beneficial for many technical skills as well. You can explain your processes and the tools you use and quantify your past successes with data points. Advertise your best work, whether that’s an impressive GitHub repository or slick website design. Highlight snapshots of code or embed an interactive project.
Talent badges like Rising Talent and Top Rated are ways to make your profile distinct from other freelancers when clients are reviewing proposals or searching for talent to invite to a job. A portfolio is optional, but you’ll need a 100% complete Upwork profile to be considered for talent badges.
Selecting your portfolio pieces
Your portfolio pieces should reflect the skills listed on your profile and be relevant to the types of jobs to which you submit proposals. Think about the main skills you want to offer clients, and then the past projects you have that incorporate each of those skills. Your portfolio should show the range of what you can do, whether that's combining skills or working in different industries.
“Be persistent, put yourself out there, and share the most important information without overcrowding your profile. Add relevant keywords so potential clients can find your profile. Create a professional portfolio, even if this means adding personal projects to showcase your skills before you have client work to highlight. For 3D modeling, projects may include renders, designs, or other visualizations of a house or apartment.”
— Anna Nutsubidze, architectural visualization artist
When clients go to your portfolio, they want to see relevant samples. Ideally, the items in your portfolio are closely related to the project the client wants to hire you for.
You can also privately publish certain portfolio items and only share them directly with clients in Messages or as part of your proposal using the Upwork link. These portfolio items do not appear in your main portfolio. This is helpful for samples that are specific examples you don't want to publicly advertise on your profile.
Create mock-ups
The items in your portfolio don't have to be from real paying clients. You can create mock-ups for fictional clients. Mock-ups are helpful for independent professionals who don't have work samples (or ones they can use publicly) to put in their portfolios. You can mock up the exact type of projects you need for your portfolio while working on your skills as an added bonus.
"I did a few personal projects that I put together in a portfolio, just making projects for fake companies, mocking up different designs so that clients would be able to see the range of work that I could do. For one of my first book design covers, I just took a Harry Potter book and redesigned it in a modern minimalist style because I wanted to attract clients that needed that specific style."
— Suzanne Ctvrtlik, Top Rated Plus graphic designer
If you're not sure what projects to add to your portfolio or what mock-ups to create, look at the profiles of other freelancers with skills similar to yours. See what projects they have in their portfolios and use that for inspiration.
How to create an Upwork portfolio
Once you have your portfolio samples picked out, creating your Upwork portfolio is easy. Go to your profile and choose "Add a portfolio."
Quick create: If you have a portfolio website, you can use the URL to auto-input the title, description, skills, and other metadata.
Manual creation: You can also build your portfolio manually, adding each item individually.
1. Choose a title for your project
Try to keep it short but helpful. You only have 40 characters.
2. List your role
This part is optional, but knowing your role can be beneficial for clients, especially if you have more than one skill.
3. Describe the project
Think of this as the overview. Keep it under 300 characters or less. You can go more in-depth when you add media.
4. Tag relevant skills
You can tag up to five skills. If you use many skills, choose the five most important ones related to the project.
5. Tag the project
If the project was for an Upwork client, you can tag the project. Clients will be able to get more information and see the public feedback on your profile.
6. Add media
You can upload pictures, videos, documents, and audio to help illustrate the project. If your media is live somewhere else, like YouTube or social media, you can use the link to embed it on your Upwork portfolio.
“There's a lot of ways that you can polish up 'OK' work to make it look better. I put almost all of my projects onto mock-ups. If it's a website design, I'll mock it up onto a Mac computer screen with a pretty-colored background. Or, if it's an email design, I may have a mock-up of someone scrolling through the email on their phone. So there are different ways that you can make it a little bit more presentable and easier for clients to actually envision themselves using the designs."
— Suzanne Ctvrtlik
7. Write a description
Under each image, you can add a short description (300 characters) or text block if you need more space to write. Use text blocks to set the scene; try to keep it brief but informative. The STAR method is a helpful technique for summarizing a project:
Situation: Describe the problem the client had.
Task: Explain your specific responsibilities.
Action: Outline step by step how you solved the problem.
Result: Present the outcome with any data points you can use.
8. Select thumbnail
Choose the thumbnail that you want to be the cover image for the project on your portfolio.
9. Preview
Once you're finished, you can use Preview to see what it looks like from the client's side on desktop and mobile and decide whether to publish now or save as a draft so you can work on it later.
After you publish your portfolio to Upwork, it will have a separate URL from your profile so you can send it to clients.
Tips and best practices for your Upwork portfolio
Your portfolio is more than a collection of past work. It’s your chance to show clients what you can do, how you think, and why you’re the right person for the job. A strong portfolio tells a clear story about your skills and makes it easier for clients to say yes. Here are some best practices to help you get the most out of this powerful tool:
- Be intentional. Choose work that reflects the types of projects you want to take on. Focus on pieces that demonstrate your strongest skills and the kind of results clients can expect from you.
- Focus on results. Highlight the outcome of your work whenever possible. If your project helped a client reach a goal or solve a problem, make that clear. When results are quantifiable, include the numbers to give your work more context and impact.
- Make it easy to understand. Keep your language clear and concise. Avoid industry jargon unless your audience will expect it. A good description helps clients quickly understand what you did and how you did it.
- Lead with visuals. Great imagery can say a lot in a short time. Add videos, images, or links that help illustrate the quality of your work and how you approach projects.
- Keep it current. Update your portfolio regularly. Replace older pieces with recent work that better represents your current skills, interests, and the kind of work you're aiming to do.
