Freelancing is growing in popularity among professionals in all roles. Small businesses are seeing firsthand how freelancers allow them to tap into new skills and markets, while 36% of current full-time employees are interested in making a switch to freelancing.

There’s a good chance you’ll need or want to pay a freelancer in the near future, and Upwork is a reliable way to do so. Whether you find freelancers on our platform or want a secure way to pay remote workers you’ve met through other means, we have solutions for nearly every situation.

Why is Upwork one of the best ways to pay a freelancer?

In a traditional contracting arrangement, clients and freelancers may disagree on how best to handle payment. Many freelancers, understandably, want a deposit payment up front so they know that they’ll get some payment even if a client refuses to pay the final invoice.

But it’s equally easy to understand clients’ hesitation to pay freelancers up front, especially when they’re working together for the first time. What if the work isn’t good? What if the freelancer never completes the project?

Upwork’s payment system, support team, and high security standards mean that you can:

  • Release payment for fixed-price projects only when you receive the deliverables you requested
  • Verify that freelancers are working on your project during any hours billed to a contract
  • Enjoy flexible billing options that work with your company’s accounting needs
  • Get support for worker classification decisions
  • Work with industry-leading talent who have been vetted by the Upwork team
  • Get help if a payment disagreement ever arises

Reliable, safe payments

Our platform walks you through everything you need to do to:

  • Find the right freelancer
  • Agree on payment terms
  • Set up a contract
  • Safely issue funds to freelancers

And, because we use an escrow model, you only pay for work that you receive and approve—no drawn-out payment negotiations needed.

Pay for fixed-price projects

Fixed-price projects on Upwork use milestones that mark key points in your agreement with a freelancer. By breaking the total cost of a project up across different milestones, you can be sure that you’re only issuing payment for work that you’ve actually received and approved.

The process to pay for a project with milestones is simple:

  • With your freelancer, decide on what deliverables and key stages a project will entail.
  • Enter each milestone into the contract, complete with a title, description, and optional due date.
  • Assign a payment amount to each milestone (don’t worry—you don’t have to deposit the total project funds all at once). For example, if you’re paying a freelancer $5,000 to design a new website, you may decide to break your project into five milestones worth $1,000 each.
  • Deposit project funds for the first milestone.
  • Invite the freelancer to accept the contract and get started.

Your freelancer will submit the agreed-upon deliverable for each milestone. Once submitted, you’ll have a chance to review the work and approve it. Only after this point is payment released to the freelancer.

Pay for hourly contracts

It’s also simple and safe to pay for hourly billing on Upwork. To do so, you’ll need to:

  • Establish the maximum hours per week that your freelancer can work on the project
  • Set up an hourly contract and ask your freelancer to accept it
  • Review and approve the hours logged by your freelancer on a weekly basis

You can even require that your freelancer use the Upwork desktop app to log their time on an hourly contract. The app takes six random images of the freelancer’s screen every hour and logs additional information like keystrokes and mouse clicks so you can verify that they’re actively working on your project for the number of hours billed.

If an issue ever does arise with an hourly contract, our dispute resolution team is on hand to help. Simply file a dispute with our team and we’ll:

  • Notify the freelancer involved in the dispute
  • Review freelancer work diaries
  • Make a decision and issue refunds if necessary

Worker classification support

Payment issues aren’t the only hiccups that can arise when working with freelancers. Correct worker classification is also important.

Worker classification is the determination as to whether someone is truly a freelancer or if they should be treated as an employee. There can be a fine line between the two—the National Employment Law Project estimates that up to 30% of companies misclassify the people they work with. Doing so can bring about legal and financial implications, so it’s in your best interest to get workers classified correctly.

Upwork Enterprise and Any Hire give you access to classification support services to make this determination easier. (Any Hire also indemnifies up to $50,000 in costs from claims of misclassification.)
