As businesses confront the urgent demands of climate change and the shift to sustainable practices, a new trend is emerging in the talent landscape: green freelancing. While green work is not a new topic, the growing role of freelancers in this space has been largely overlooked. Once considered a niche, sustainability expertise is now essential to how companies navigate evolving regulations, achieve Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals, and respond to changing consumer expectations.

The growing demand and rising value of sustainability experts

A study by the Boston Consulting Group reveals that over 60% of companies now incorporate ESG considerations into their digital transformation efforts, and more than 80% plan to increase their sustainability investments. On Upwork alone, green freelance jobs—those requiring sustainability expertise—rose by 500% between 2019 and 2023. This growth reflects a broader hiring shift, with over two-thirds of recent sustainability hires coming from outside the organization, up from 45% in 2012, according to Trellis’ State of the Sustainability Profession report (to which we contributed analysis detailing green work on Upwork).

With green jobs projected to comprise 14% of the U.S. workforce by 2030, the current talent shortage in this field presents significant opportunities for skilled independent professionals. Freelancers are not only bridging essential gaps but also driving strategic change across industries. From renewable energy consulting to sustainable design, freelance sustainability experts are helping organizations meet environmental goals and create a positive, lasting impact.

Beyond the numbers, we’ve spoken with Upwork freelancers engaged in sustainability work. Their stories illustrate how independent professionals with sustainability expertise are meeting critical business needs while contributing to the broader public good of climate action.

Empowering businesses with freelance sustainability expertise

Transition to more sustainable energy sources is key to mitigating climate change. Given the scale of this task, it’s no surprise that professionals with energy expertise are in high demand. In a traditional full-time employment model, these professionals’ skills are limited to a single organization. However, their expertise is versatile and can create greater economic value when applied across a broader range of businesses.

For sustainability professionals, freelancing offers flexibility beyond the traditional 9-to-5, allowing them to meet the growing demand for project-based expertise in renewable energy, environmental science, and carbon footprint analysis. More importantly, they can share their knowledge with a wider business community.

Consider Matt Chester of Chester Energy & Policy, who provides consulting in clean energy and sustainable business practices. Over time, Matt noticed companies increasingly sought his guidance for strategic, long-term sustainability efforts. Lacking in-house sustainability teams, many companies rely on Matt to develop comprehensive sustainability roadmaps, leading to deeper, ongoing partnerships.

“What I noticed is that companies—whether sustainability was central to their mission or not—wanted help shaping their long-term sustainability strategies. These weren’t just one-off tasks but substantial, strategic projects that led to rewarding partnerships,” Matt explains.

As demand for green expertise has increased, so have earnings for sustainability freelancers. Between 2019 and 2023, earnings for green freelancers on Upwork rose by 460%. In 2023, these professionals earned 47% more per hour than freelancers in other skills categories, underscoring the value and high demand for sustainability skills.

Amid uncertain macroeconomic conditions, companies are often budget-constrained and cautious about new hires. Freelancers provide an accessible solution, particularly for small and mid-sized companies aiming to achieve sustainability goals without full-time overhead.

Travis Turgeon, a sustainability consultant on Upwork, has also seen rising demand, especially in high-impact sectors such as energy, agriculture, and technology, where green practices have become essential. Recently, he worked on projects analyzing waste-to-energy solutions and exploring green methanol's potential for reducing maritime emissions. His expertise enables companies to tackle complex sustainability challenges that may exceed their internal capabilities.

“Organizations typically seek freelancers for sustainability projects due to limited resources or the need for specialized insights. Even in industries aware of green trends, translating these insights into actionable steps can be challenging,” Travis notes.

Freelancers as partners in achieving sustainability goals

Freelancers have become essential partners for businesses committed to sustainability targets. Whether it’s developing sustainable supply chains, conducting carbon audits, or crafting environmental communications, freelancers bring the precise expertise needed to advance environmental goals.

As the push for sustainability intensifies, the role of green freelancers will only grow more essential. These professionals not only bridge talent gaps but also drive innovation and sustainable transformation across industries, helping companies meet critical environmental goals with agility and expertise. For businesses navigating a world where sustainability is no longer optional, partnering with independent experts offers a path forward—one that aligns economic growth with environmental responsibility and shapes a resilient, sustainable future for generations to come.
