Senior Fractional Nonprofit CFO We provide outsourced Accounting, Controller, and CFO services to mission-driven organizations. We serve nonprofits with budgets ranging from startup through approximately $50M, acting as an extension of executive leadership to build finance functions that are accurate, scalable, and decision-driven. We are not looking for a traditional accountant. We are looking for someone who can implement best practices, improve financial operations, and become a trusted strategic advisor to Executive Directors and Boards. Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Nonprofit CFO who has successfully built finance functions within nonprofit organizations. This role combines strategic leadership with operational excellence, helping clients strengthen financial controls, improve reporting, enhance grant compliance, and make better financial decisions. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced consulting environment, manage multiple nonprofit clients simultaneously, and continually improve our standardized CFO methodology. Responsibilities Executive Financial Leadership * Serve as the outsourced CFO for multiple nonprofit clients. * Partner with Executive Directors, CEOs, and Boards. * Present financial results to Finance Committees and Boards. * Translate financial information into actionable business decisions. * Provide strategic guidance on growth, sustainability, and organizational risk. ⸻ Financial Planning & Analysis * Develop annual budgets and multi-year financial plans. * Prepare rolling cash flow forecasts. * Build scenario and sensitivity models. * Analyze budget-to-actual performance. * Monitor liquidity, reserves, and financial health. * Develop organization-specific KPIs and executive dashboards. ⸻ Nonprofit Accounting & Compliance * Ensure compliance with nonprofit GAAP (ASC 958). * Oversee restricted and unrestricted fund accounting. * Manage grant compliance and reporting. * Develop indirect cost allocation methodologies. * Support Uniform Guidance and Single Audit requirements. * Coordinate annual audits and preparation of audit schedules. ⸻ Operational Excellence Implement and continuously improve: * Month-end close procedures * Internal control frameworks * Approval workflows * Procurement policies * Financial policies and procedures * Board reporting packages * Finance manuals * Close checklists * Cash management processes * Budget ownership processes * Grant tracking systems ⸻ Client Advisory * Advise nonprofit leadership on strategic financial decisions. * Review contracts and financial implications. * Assist with funding strategies and sustainability planning. * Support leadership during organizational growth and change. * Identify operational efficiencies and automation opportunities. ⸻ Technology Stack Candidates should have strong experience with most of the following: Accounting & Finance * QuickBooks Online * BILL * Gusto * ADP * Fathom Reporting & Analysis * Microsoft Excel (advanced financial modeling) * Google Sheets (advanced) * Coefficient Workflow & Operations * Google Workspace * DocuSign * AI tools to improve finance workflows and reporting Experience with grant management platforms such as Fluxx is highly desirable. ⸻ Required Experience * 15+ years in nonprofit finance * Former CFO, Deputy CFO, or Finance Director * Experience supporting organizations between $2M and $50M+ * Demonstrated success building finance departments and systems * Significant experience with grants and restricted funding * Extensive Board and Audit Committee presentation experience * Proven leadership managing finance teams ⸻ Technical Knowledge Candidates should demonstrate expertise in: * Nonprofit GAAP * Grant accounting * Fund accounting * Cash flow forecasting * Budget development * Financial modeling * Internal controls * Audit preparation * Fiscal sponsorship * Cost allocation * Financial statement analysis * Board reporting ⸻ Success in This Role Within the first 90 days, you will be expected to: * Assess each client’s finance function. * Identify operational risks and opportunities. * Implement reporting standards. * Build executive dashboards and forecasting models. * Improve month-end close processes. * Strengthen internal controls. * Establish standardized Board reporting. * Create practical recommendations that improve financial decision-making. ⸻ What We’re Looking For The ideal candidate is: * Strategic and commercially minded * Process-oriented * Exceptionally organized * Comfortable advising executive leadership * A strong communicator who can simplify complex financial topics * Passionate about building systems rather than maintaining the status quo * Driven to implement best practices that can be standardized across multiple nonprofit clients This is an opportunity to help shape and scale the delivery model, building repeatable, high-quality finance systems that enable nonprofit leaders to make confident decisions while maintaining strong financial stewardship.
