I’m Kevin. I design things. Over the last ten years I have taken over twenty commercial products from concept to manufacture while navigating startup challenges along the way. I am “practical” above all else. A team player and easy to communicate with, I am able to take rough concepts and deliver them as working products or prototypes with minimal cost and hassle. My specialty is electronic hardware design, though most projects involve physical or mechanical parts as well. This is my full time job, working from my dedicated workshop near Portland, Oregon. I have in-house capability for most aspects of bringing up new designs and fabricating one-off devices or prototypes. We have high resolution SLA 3D printing (UV resin), a large 4x8’ production CNC machine suitable for plastics and most aluminum, and plenty of bench/floor space for your project. I have relationships with various local machine shops and test labs, so extra support is convenient if needed. I work in Altium Designer for schematic and PCB board layout, and use Solidworks or Autodesk Fusion for physical component design and working with complex physical assemblies. I have designed many injection molded parts, stamped metal parts, etc. Many of my products involve radio so I’m familiar with the FCC test lab process for both module based radios and custom designs. I have designed Internet of Things IoT products, wireless mesh networking, and low cost proprietary point to point radios. I am intermediate level coding on small 8 to 32 bit microprocessors in C,C++. My code is extremely "human readable" and cleanly documented. I have solid experience with Mircochip PIC processors, Atmel, STM32, and MSP430. I have written several low level handlers for custom board hardware and protocols. If you’re looking for a competent person that is easy and reliable to work with, and who will handle your project as if it were their own, let’s chat and see what happens. 🏆 Top Rated Product Developer ( I've developed my own products || I'm now helping others on the Upwork platform ) 🏠 I have a Small Home Laboratory to develop/debug prototype boards for your product 💭 I'm a native English speaker My name is Stephen, and I have 25+ years in product development, including 13 years at Microchip in roles like Test Engineer, Design Engineer, Silicon Validation, and Applications Engineer. I specialize in developing products from concept to working systems. I can handle both hardware and software or work flexibly on specific areas like architecture and hardware design. I’ve developed two successful products: (1) KEYKatcher hardware keylogger – A device plugged into a PS/2 keyboard port to record and play keystrokes. It was popular among parents for monitoring children's computer use, with tens of thousands sold. Sales declined as PS/2 ports became obsolete (2) TightWatt pool timer – An intelligent controller for swimming pool motors, featuring a year-round algorithm. It was awarded a patent and gained national distribution. Through all the product development, I’ve created a system for planning and designing working products. This system reduces costs ( by reducing mistakes ). I frequently make product improvements in 1️⃣ Lowering energy usage: important in battery-powered products 2️⃣ Increasing performance: increasing sample rates or changing communications protocols 3️⃣ Lowering product cost: making full use of the microcontroller peripherals to reduce external components I have completed more than 70 projects on Upwork but to check my capabilities or skills, you can check out the following projects: ➡️ Hardware Prototype Design for Plant Monitor Product using ESP-32 ➡️ Microchip ATtiny202 Code Development ➡️ Energy Storage Monitoring System ➡️ BM83 Bluetooth Application Schematic ➡️ Embedded System with PIC Microcontroller & Accelerometer ➡️ PCB Power Usage Optimization ➡️ TI MSP430 Development Additional Skills: ➕ Leading-edge technologies such as USB/USB-C, Lithium Battery Charging, LED and Color Mixing, I2S Digital Audio, and Analog Measurements ➕ Common Communication Busses: USB, RS-232, RS-485, CAN, I2C, SPI, Infrared ( with carrier ) As mentioned above, I have a small home laboratory where I have all the tools I need to develop/debug prototype boards for your product. This includes: ⚙️ Multiple programmers for Microchip, Atmel, and TI parts ⚙️ Logic analyzers to quickly find issues with communication busses such as I2C, SPI, UART, I2S, …. ⚙️ A “power profiler” with picoAmp range ( yes, picoAmp, a trillionth of an Ampere ) for power optimization of low-power products ⚙️ A reflow oven for assembling prototype PCBs ⚙️ Inspection equipment for verifying PCB assembly ⚙️ A fellow Upwork contractor is available to do the physical assembly work. She works at a much lower rate than me and has the patience to hand-populate / hand-solder prototype boards Some electronic inventory is on hand. I may have all the components in-house to complete your project Feel free to contact me through UpWork. My education includes a M.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Physics from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. I have experience in a wide variety of electrical engineering disciplines including power electronics, analog circuit design, embedded systems and signal processing. My primary fields of study in my Master’s program were power electronics design/analysis, electronic circuit design/analysis and digital signal processing. One example of a previous job function was at DRS-Power and Control Technologies. The project I worked on was the redesign of all power conversion and distribution systems for the next-generation Navy Nuclear Submarine (Ohio Replacement Program). After 1.5 years at this this position, I lead major start-to-finish designs on five separate, interdisciplinary circuit board designs. These designs required heavy design efforts with power and digital embedded systems including microprocessor, DSP, FPGA and GPP architectures.Hardware PrototypingHardware DesignDigital ElectronicsDigital Signal ProcessingPower ElectronicsLayout DesignEmbedded SystemAnalog ElectronicsCircuit DesignIntegrated CircuitElectrical EngineeringEngineering Simulation - $75 hourly

My job is to design functional and tested circuits and PCBs for your application or consult you, so you can do that your self. Just give me requirements for your circuit: the price for bill of materials, deadline and a list of required features. After prototype of device is designed I almost always advise I will order a few sample PCBs for testing. After testing and debugging is completed, I will ship them to you, so you can verify my testing results. This costs a bit extra for you, but you are buying 100% working circuit design which needs no testing. Just take it and use it in your project. If you want to know how a circuit works I can develop complete math model of the circuit. This approach is way more accurate than SPICE simulation and allows you to understand how the circuit operates. I have completed at least one project having fallowing sub circuits: Analog: Low noise, low speed front-ends (from Hz to 100KHz): Photodiode, strain gauge, pressure sensitive resistors, magnetic angle sensors, tensile, thermocouples and other. High order active filters Voltage measurement (uV to kV) Current measurement (pA to tens of A) Resistance measurements (mOhm to Mohm) Frequency measurement (below GHz) Current output Oscillators (Bubba, Pierce, Hartley, phase shift, relaxation, crystal, RC) Integrated RF transmitters/receivers Digital: PCIe USB HDMI I2S SPI High speed parallel interfaces Logic circuits (TTL, CMOS) SOCs Power: DC/DC converters: Buck, Boost, SEPIC, full bridge, Cuk, Linear AC/DC converters (up to 1.8kW) Brushless and brushed motor drivers TEC drivers CAD packages: DipTrace KiCad Altium I have fallowing equipment: 1x Osciloscope RTB2004 4 channel 10 bit 300MHz with logic analyzer having 16 differential channels up to 600Mbps. 1x Oscilloscope HMO1002 2 channel 8 bit 50MHz. 1x Multimeter HMC8012 5,75digit 1x Electronic load IT8616 1.8kVA 420VAC 20AC (60A peak) or 600VDC 20ADC with AC signal analysis 1x Electronic load IT8512C 120VDC 60ADC 1x Signal generator Rohde and Schwarz AFG 20MHz 1x TP3020 30V 20A linear power supply 1x HY5003-2 dual channel 50V 3A linear power supply 2x PeakTech 6080A 15V 3A power supply 1x VP-2000VA - 2kVA 230VAC to 120VAC converter. 1x DER-EE DE-5000 RLC meter I also have programmer for: Texas Instruments CC series, Texas Instruments MSP430 programmer, Microchip ICD3/PicKit2/AVR ISP USBasp, Segger ARM programmer, SiliconLabs 8051 core programmerHardware PrototypingCAmplifiers & FiltersPower ElectronicsPCB DesignKiCadMicrocontroller DesignAltium DesignerAnalog ElectronicsMicrocontroller ProgrammingElectronic Circuit DesignAutomotive EngineeringCircuit DesignAssembly LanguageDigital Electronics - $20 hourly
