For 32 years, I worked in educational and academic publishing, first as a content editor for Harcourt Brace and Holt, Rinehart and Winston and then as Vice President and Director of Humanities for McGraw-Hill Education. In that role, I oversaw publication of all humanities projects and ensured that MHE rose to become the leading humanities publisher. • In 2014, I left MHE to return to my first love--hands-on editing. • I have worked for a variety of clients, including MHE, Contentra Technologies, The Today Foundation, and MDPI, an open-access publisher of international academic, scientific, and professional journals. • I am equally comfortable with developmental editing, line editing, and copy editing and have a great love of and respect for the English language. • I hold a B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Washington and Lee University, with a double major in history and communications and an M.S. in Education, summa cum laude, with an emphasis on instructional design, from Northern Illinois University. • Having so much editorial experience, I am naturally experienced with CMS, ACS, MLA, AMA, and APA styles. While I do not have the latest iteration of each memorized, I know where to look to find the answers quickly. • I have worked in a variety of CMSs, including Habitat, InCopy, InDesign, and LaTex. • I believe that active communication is key when undertaking a project. Keeping all stakeholders informed effectively deals with small issues before they become major ones and streamlines product development.Line Editing

I have worked in several areas of the publishing realm, including newspaper copyediting, magazine writing, literary agency and publishing house internships, ghostwriting, freelance editing, and proofreading for a business and marketing research company. I've also worked with local authors on their novels for publication. I tend to work on a fixed-price basis instead of hourly for editing, and I work on an hourly basis for formatting. There is nothing more pleasing to me than a stack of (digital) paper filled with errors waiting for correction. I am especially interested in editing long-form works of fiction and memoir. If you need formatting for Kindle Direct Publishing, I can format your Word file and create the layout for your eBook (minus cover design) using Kindle Create. Need to "humanize" your AI content? I can do that, too. This would fall under line editing, and I can offer you a quote based on word count. Please note before contacting me that I prefer to communicate solely through Upwork messaging, and I do not do voice calls. Thank you so much for your time and consideration!Line Editing

You’ve written a beautiful story. You’ve poured your heart into every word—rewriting, refining, and searching for just the right rhythm or phrase. You care deeply about your message, your characters, and the children who will one day read your book. But now you’re wondering... Is it clear enough? Does it sing? Does the emotional arc land the way I want it to? Will it resonate with young readers—at the right level, in the right way? This is where I come in. I’m a heart-centered editor who helps authors shape their stories with care, clarity, and confidence. I don’t just fix grammar—I listen closely to what you're trying to say and help you say it with power and grace. I bring a warm, encouraging touch to every project. But I’m also honest—gently offering the feedback you need to make your story the best it can be. I’m gentle enough to coach children in their writing. And I bring that same compassion, curiosity, and steady support to the authors I work with. What I bring: - 12+ years of editorial experience, with formal training in editing - A deep love of children’s literature, shaped by reading with my five children every day - A writer’s heart (I’m working on my own YA fantasy novel) - A calm, collaborative presence that treats your words with respect Clients often say I bring warmth, clarity, and deep care to every project. I truly value the warm, collaborative relationships I develop with my clients. I limit my schedule to make sure that I am thorough and fully present for you and your project. I take the time needed to ensure I deliver high-quality service every time. How I can help: - Copyediting & proofreading – Grammar, punctuation, and consistency - Line editing – Flow, rhythm, tone, and age-appropriate clarity - Beta reading – Gentle, constructive feedback with in-line notes - Developmental feedback – Emotional arc, character, pacing, and structure My focus areas: - Picture books - Easy readers - Early chapter books - Middle grade fiction - YA fiction (clean/no spice) - Lyrical nonfiction - Empowering books for teens and tweens Writing for children is an art—and it’s an honor to help you bring your story to life with clarity, beauty, and heart. Flat-Rate Packages: While my rates reflect the care and attention I give each project, I’m always happy to create custom quotes or fixed-price options for indie authors with meaningful work and a modest budget. - Picture Books – $150 for developmental, line, and copyediting (up to 1,000 words) - Early Readers – $200 for line editing (up to 7,000 words) - Middle Grade / YA Beta Read – $250 for beta read + editorial letter (up to 15,000 words) - Copyediting – $650 for up to 40,000 words (light line editing included where helpful) - Writing Coaching – $45/hour for compassionate, practical support through your writing processqLine Editing

Hi there! I'm Mary, a highly motivated and multi-faceted editor with strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to drive complex projects from concept to completion—all while maintaining tight deadlines. I have a BS in Integrated Language Arts, and a certificate in editing from the University of Chicago. My expertise is in the Chicago Manual of Style; however, I am proficient in a variety of style guides. I have worked in the employee benefits field for over six years, where I did a lot of technical writing and editing for a variety of industries. Though I worked in a technical field for many years, I am more than a one-trick pony, and enjoy writing and editing for all genres. I am currently the proposal manager for a facility solutions company where I write and edit proposals for multimillion dollar design-build and energy conservation projects. I also create case studies for all of our major projects and I am the content creator for the company's social media platforms. In addition to my typical duties, I write and edit for the company's in-house magazine, which is published biannually. I am passionate about the writing and editing process, and it thrills me to deliver content that exceeds my client's expectations. I provide in-depth content editing, but will always work to preserve your voice. I understand and appreciate that your work is your brainchild and I aspire to be a partner in your creative efforts. Together we can polish your content so that it entices and connects to your audience. I look forward to developing and crafting the written word with you!Line Editing

I am looking for interesting projects to ghostwrite and novels in need of developmental editing. My ideal project would be ghostwriting a contemporary romance novel, with a detailed outline supplied. I'll also consider other jobs on a case by case basis, so if you think we'd be a good match, feel free to reach out! I've been writing professionally since my first YA trilogy (A Touch Mortal, A Touch Morbid, A Touch Menacing) was published by HarperCollins in 2011. Since then, I've moved on to a more hybrid model. The film rights for my second YA trilogy (Vial Things, Something Grave, and Another Vein) are represented by CAA. I am currently working on a spicy adult paranormal romance series publishing under a pen name and can provide samples as needed. I'm comfortable writing both paranormal and contemporary novels in a variety of subgenres. I'm also familiar with the Kindle Vella program and would be able to use your outline to write a story fitting their episode guidelines (popular chapter lengths, cliffhanger ending, catchy title and author note). My prices are negotiable and may be higher or lower depending on the project but I normally charge .07-.09 per word. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I seem like a good fit and hopefully we can reach a number that works for us both!Line Editing

I am an educator first. In thirty years of teaching children, I have developed an extensive amount of original curriculum in the different core subjects. I am a writer, too. I write to learn, as well as to express ideas. Putting these two vocations together makes me a strong editor. I have the skills to analyze writing at the sentence, paragraph, and whole composition levels. When critiquing, I ask the writer to consider certain issues without telling her what to write. I suggest alternatives without insisting on how she solve the problem. On the other hand, I have enough knowledge and experience to catch grammatical and factual mistakes that must be corrected. I am a twin, a husband of thirty-one years, and the father of two grown children. I enjoy cooking, live musical performances, and playing go, an ancient strategy game.Line Editing

I proofread like your reputation depends on it—because sometimes, it does. Your words. My scalpel. I cut the fluff and kill the typos—quietly and cleanly. Every mark I make earns its place. I’m a detail-obsessed proofreader and copy editor with a sharp eye and a deep respect for voice. I don’t rewrite your work—I refine it, making sure your message comes through crisp, clear, and mistake-free. Whether you’re polishing a blog post, tightening a business report, or finalizing a novel, I’ve got you. I’ve worked with: Indie authors needing final eyes before publication Academics who want clean copy (but don’t want their tone butchered) Bloggers, marketers, and creatives who want their writing to actually flow I’m fluent in the nuances of grammar, style, and clarity—but more importantly, I know when to leave your voice alone. Edits should make you sound smarter, not like someone else entirely. Tools I work with regularly: Microsoft Word (Track Changes) Google Docs (Suggesting Mode) PDF markup (Adobe Acrobat) Style guides: APA, MLA, Chicago, AP Grammarly, Hemingway, and PerfectIt (when needed—not as a crutch) Fast turnaround, responsive communication, and obsessive attention to detail are my promises. I don’t miss deadlines, and I don’t miss stray commas either. Let’s make your writing clean, compelling, and confidently error-free. Because if it has your name on it, it deserves to be flawless.Line Editing

My career interests lie in combining my passions for science, writing and advocacy for protecting the outdoors. I have professional freelance journalism experience with Fondriest Environmental and Trails Magazine. At Fondriest, I have written scientific news articles and interviewed a range of sources from graduate students to internationally acclaimed researchers. At Trails Magazine, I gained experience with personal narrative and adventure journalism in a high-quality outdoor publication. In the summer of 2023, I interned with the Ohio Division of Wildlife Communications unit. I learned much about how a state government office communicates with the public by telling incredible stories about their employees' work. I honed my technical and narrative writing skills centered on themes related to natural resources. I also observed research such as bird banding, electrofishing, and plant surveys. I graduated from Miami University, Oxford, in 2025. I majored in biology with a co-major in environmental science and a minor in journalism. At Miami University, I was a student of the Honors College, the head editor for the Environment and Opinion sections for The Miami Student newspaper, the Managing Editor for The Miami Student Magazine, and a student ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. I previously did undergraduate research monitoring trail cameras to quantify data on the diet of white-tail deer. Moreover, I was named to the President's List for the spring 2023 and fall 2023 semesters, an honor given to the top 3% of students in their respective colleges. I have won a Regional Mark of Excellence Award from the Society of Professional Journalists and an Ohio News & Media Association award for my opinion columns in The Miami Student in the spring of 2023 and spring of 2024, respectively. I am passionate about the outdoors and would love to pursue a career where I positively impact the environment and encourage people to get outdoors. I will have obtained a strong scientific background with my degree, and I enjoy learning about natural systems and the innovative ways science can improve people's lives. I also enjoy writing about anything related to the environment and raising awareness about important issues, which is further bolstered by my journalism minor and extensive experience with The Miami Student. I am most interested in a career in environmental writing and journalism. Outdoor and adventure journalism is also a passion of mine, and I believe showing people the beauty of our planet encourages them to protect it.Line Editing
