n8n vs. Zapier: Which Tool is Best for Your Business?
n8n and Zapier are two tools for building workflow automations. n8n is best for technical users; Zapier is best for SaaS users. This guide explains why.

n8n and Zapier are two platforms for building AI-powered, app-connected workflows that execute specific actions automatically. When used in a business context, these tools can potentially enable you and your team to get more done — from creating an AI agent that chats with customers to automatically creating service tickets when a specific type of Slack message lands in your inbox.
This guide will walk you through some of the key differences between the tools and help you decide whether you should try n8n or Zapier for your first automation project.
What is n8n?
n8n is a low-code, node-based automation platform that lets you use complex logic to connect tools, applications, and processes. You don't need to be a skilled coder to use n8n. The app has a visual interface that functions similarly to a digital whiteboard: Place the tools you'd like to connect on the board, integrate AI agents, and literally draw connections between applications to create complex workflows.

If you are a developer, though, you can use n8n's code node to work in JavaScript or Python. This enables you to do even more with the tool and move beyond its out-of-the box options and native integrations.

What is Zapier?
Zapier is a no-code automation and workflow builder that, like n8n, connects various apps, AI agents, and systems. You can use a visual drag-and-drop workflow builder or chat with the Zapier AI assistant to build complex automations using conditional logic. For example, you could set up a process that creates a Google Calendar event every time someone fills out an appointment form in Airtable.
Zapier doesn't offer the same level of custom code support that n8n does. That said, Zapier does offer additional tools to support business automation, including a Tables product that lets you store mission-critical data in Zapier before pushing it out to the different tools and AI agents in your workflows.
n8n vs. Zapier: How do these automation tools compare?
n8n and Zapier have numerous differences — even though you can use both platforms to build AI-powered workflows.
Check out some of the key differences below, then read on for more details about how using n8n differs from the experience of working with Zapier.
Learning curve
Depending on your level of technical know-how, you may find that the learning curve when using n8n is steep. You'll need to know, or learn, how to work with things like webhooks, application programming interfaces (APIs), and model context protocol (MCP) servers. Once you're comfortable with these things, though, n8n can give you complete control over the workflow automation process.
Zapier prioritizes ease of use with a straightforward, drag-and-drop experience. Yes, it means there are limits to what you can do with Zapier, but it's going to be easier for your entire team to use regardless of their technical experience.
Prebuilt integrations
n8n connects to more than 1,200 different tools right away, including:
- Airtable
- Anthropic
- AWS S3
- Google Gemini
- Jira
- MongoDB
- Microsoft Outlook
- Notion
- Todoist
- WooCommerce
While n8n does connect to some no-code software as a service (SaaS) tools like those made by Google and Notion, many of its integrations are with data warehouses, webhooks, and APIs. This is what gives n8n users the flexibility to connect to commercial tools or self-hosted systems and data lakes.
Zapier, on the other hand, includes more than 8,500 prebuilt app integrations out of the box and is compatible with popular business apps like:
- Airtable
- Asana
- Google Sheets
- Hubspot
- Mailchimp
- Microsoft Outlook
- Notion
- Salesforce
- Shopify
- Slack
- YouTube
If you're using a variety of commercially available, cloud-based SaaS tools in your day-to-day work, there's a good chance that Zapier will offer the connections you need to build workflows.
AI features
n8n includes access to an AI integration that allows you to build AI-powered systems right in the n8n interface. To use this feature, though, you'll need to set up API accounts with your third-party AI of choice — like Google Gemini or OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Doing so will let you use n8n to build AI agents that act as chatbots, web scrapers, social media content generators, and more. You can even have the agent access a memory to keep outputs consistent.
Zapier also lets you leverage AI automation. The company advertises its agent functionality as "teammates" that can delegate to each other and send information to a human worker, too. This process uses Zapier's own AI models, so you don't need to connect to a third-party API. If you want to connect an AI tool you already use to Zapier, though, you can — the company's MCP server allows you to bring your Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT license, among others, into the loop.
You can even chat with Zapier's AI copilot to have it help you when building complex workflows.
Both n8n and Zapier offer prebuilt AI agent templates that you can customize and deploy in your workflows to make the setup process easier, too.
Custom code support
n8n lets you tweak the code involved in your multistep workflows, so you can tackle very specific needs or connect to proprietary tools hosted on your premises.
Zapier doesn't offer custom code support — you're limited to the integrations that ship with your Zapier account. While thousands of tools and options are included, it's possible that businesses in a highly technical or very niche field may not find all of their key programs included in the Zapier library.
Hosting and data storage
You can choose to host n8n on your own server or through a server company of your choice. If you go this route, you can get access to n8n's free community edition — though it comes with some restrictions like no workflow history, enterprise single sign-on (SSO) or custom variables. Depending on your needs, these restrictions may be a worthwhile tradeoff for access to a cost-effective automation tool.
If you don't want to or aren't able to take on the complexities of self-hosted n8n, you can subscribe to a cloud version that's hosted by the company. If your usage needs are very high, though, n8n may require you to self-host.
Zapier, meanwhile, is only available as a cloud-based, subscription tool. There's no option to download and self-host Zapier on your own server.
Price and features
n8n offers one free and six paid plans based on company size and feature needs.
Zapier offers fewer plan options but costs less than n8n — plus, you don't have to host it yourself.
The verdict
While the core use cases of n8n and Zapier are similar, the way the two tools function mean that they're best suited for different audiences.
Zapier: best for non-technical users working with SaaS tools
If you're a beginner to the world of AI automation — or you don't know how to code in Python — Zapier is going to be your best bet. Price-wise, Zapier is also the best choice for small to medium size businesses that might be operating on a limited budget.
Zapier is a good way to begin exploring automation and AI agents without worrying about things like hosting, server uptime, AI APIs, or code. Plus, you can always migrate to a more complex platform like n8n in the future if your automation needs outgrow what Zapier can support.
n8n: best for technical teams with specific customization needs
If you're a technical professional or working at a company with large pools of data and on-premises servers, n8n will be the better choice for you. To get the most out of n8n, though, you have to be ready and able to leverage custom code and AI APIs. Otherwise, you'll be limited to working with a library of prebuilt integrations that's smaller than Zapier’s offering.
