Companies need their data organized and digitally stored. Data entry specialists take this collected data and type it into the company's storage system. As a data entry clerk, you may work in Microsoft Excel, spreadsheets, or a software system like Salesforce. 

Data entry specialists ensure that data is accurate as they input it into the database, checking for any abnormalities. Clients may give you hard copies of account information, receipts, bills, reports, customer records, invoices, or financial statements that you need to type into a digital document.

Instead of manually entering data, this role may focus on quality assurance for AI-generated datasets. Data entry was one of the most in-demand AI-related skills in September 2025, according to the Upwork monthly hiring report. 

As a data entry specialist, you may need to be familiar with using AI tools to import data from PDFs, forms, or other scanned documents. You’ll need to make sure these datasets are correct, are formatted properly, and contain accurate information. 

Some data entry jobs require specialized training, like medical billing or bookkeeping. Being familiar with AI privacy laws and whether you can legally use AI to create these datasets can be helpful. Depending on the data you’re working with, you may need to redact sensitive information.

Client needs generally fall into four different types of transcription work: edited, verbatim, intelligent verbatim, and phonetic. Captioners can write out audio in real time or from a recording for closed captioning and subtitles.

Many companies offer customer chats as part of their customer support programs. Chats can replace having a customer service hotline that customers can call if they have a question or need support. Chat support agents can help multiple customers at once. As a live chat agent, you can respond to customers, answer their questions, deescalate complaints, and provide technical support through an online chat platform.

Customers can often tell when they’re chatting with AI and may get frustrated. Live agents can help solve more complex issues, deescalate situations with frustrated customers, and provide personalized support. On the Upwork Marketplace, there was 30% more interest in customer service and tech support jobs in October 2025. Demand for customer chat support tends to spike during the holidays and other peak seasons.

8. AI prompt writing

When using conversational AI tools, users enter prompts to generate the information they want. While search queries are usually questions, prompts are typically commands, though they can also be phrased as questions depending on the objective. 

AI models need specific commands to provide the correct outputs. Every AI response is tailored to the user’s context and the specific prompt. AI models have memory, allowing the user to create prompts that affect all future responses in the same thread. 

Prompt writers specialize in crafting prompts that produce the most relevant and accurate outputs from an AI. As a prompt writer, you need to understand what you’re trying to achieve and figure out the best way to convey this to the AI tool. This often means iterating, rephrasing, or experimenting with different input styles to refine the output. 

AI prompt writers fall under the umbrella of prompt engineering. While you need to understand how generative AI and large language models work, prompt writers typically don’t have to do programming.

Demonstrate your expertise by earning credentials. Depending on what type of online typing job you're looking for, you may need additional credentials to be competitive and become an expert in your niche. You can take online courses and earn certifications to upskill. If your certification was verified by Credly, you can import it into your Upwork profile for potential clients to see.

Upwork offers skill certifications in areas like web, mobile and software development, and in customer service categories. Currently, these certifications are invite-only. Once completed, these skill certifications are displayed on your profile.

Build your portfolio

Freelancers on Upwork who have published a portfolio are hired nine times more often than those who haven't. Your profile is an opportunity to show off your skills and the quality of your work. 

Building your portfolio on Upwork is simple. You can use projects from past clients or employers as long as you have their permission. Combine visual aids like screenshots, PDFs, videos, and web links with descriptions. Let potential clients know what you contributed to the project and its results.

If the project you want to use is from an Upwork client, you can link it to your portfolio so potential clients can see the feedback. Make sure to keep your portfolio updated to reflect your latest skills and projects.  

Don’t worry if you don't have any samples that you can use; you can create mock-ups. Mock-ups are unpaid projects that let you make the exact work samples that you need. Just make sure to note in your portfolio that these weren't real, paying clients.

Be open to writing paid sample pieces 

Even if you have a portfolio, clients may ask for a sample piece to get a better feel for your work, your communication style, and how you’ll fit in with their specific company. Figure out what you're comfortable with writing as a sample piece, and have a set price. It could be a short 500-word blog piece, a few editing pages, or a handful of meta descriptions. 

You could initially set your sample rates slightly lower than normal to make them more appealing to clients. Short sample pieces shouldn't take too much of your time, and you will earn income when clients pay for them. 

Certain clients may opt for a full-length sample piece instead and pay your standard rate or negotiate a slightly lower one. Settle at a rate that is fair to both of you so you can do your best work and win over the client. 

Keep in mind that free trials or unpaid test projects are against Upwork’s Terms of Service and requests for free work can be a sign of a possible scam. 

How to make money from typing jobs in 2025

Rather than being a general typist and applying to many different typing jobs, specializing in a specific skill can allow you to charge more as you build your expertise. Focusing on an industry within your skill, like medical transcribing, can lead to higher-paying jobs. 

You may need to take an online course and earn a certificate, but in the long run, you may earn more. Typing jobs that require no experience may be more competitive and pay less than niche-specific jobs and projects.
