Does your whiteboard feel basic? What if it could save you time by automatically connecting your thoughts, suggesting ideas, and summarizing complex information?

To revolutionize your team’s brainstorming, ideation, and productivity with a collaboration tool, look no further than Miro, an infinite whiteboard tool driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology. Its generative AI feature, Miro AI can level up your workflows at every stage of the process, from ideation to execution.

Uses for Miro AI in your team’s workflow include creating presentations, brainstorming, problem-solving, and distilling information into visual narratives.

In this guide, we’ll cover how Miro works, its core features and integrations, and how Miro AI tools can enhance your in-house and freelance talent collaboration.

Miro AI’s core features

Miro AI facilitates streamlined workflows through its versatile productivity tools and templates. These can be accessed through the Miro board, Miro AI’s central interface.

Miro AI

You can choose a Miro board visualization template that best meets your needs—popular options include mind maps, sticky note packs, user stories, and flow diagrams. Or, create a blank Miro board and add these elements for total customization.

Miro AI includes a range of generative AI tools that enhance collaboration, ideation, and content creation. Below are tips for accessing and using these features:

  • Accessing Miro AI. You can open Miro AI through the context menu (by clicking on an item) or via the Command palette—use CMD + K on Mac, CTRL + K on Windows, or access it through the hamburger menu.
  • Using the Command palette. Generate new elements from scratch using prompts. For example, ask Miro AI to create a mind map on “social media strategies,” and it will auto-fill the map for you.
  • Using the context menu. Expand specific parts of an existing element. For example, click on a bubble labeled “Platforms” in a mind map and let Miro AI suggest related ideas, questions, or topics.
  • Using templates for real-time collaboration. Templates support live interaction—participants can add reactions, comments, sticky notes, and more, making it easy to cocreate in real time.
  • Building interactive project hubs. Users can add widgets like code blocks, cards, and documents to build boards that serve as dynamic, interactive workspaces.

Next, we’ll break down the function of each basic template on the Miro board and the uses of some of the new features for your workflows.

Mind maps

When brainstorming, keeping track of your ideas and understanding how everything fits together is essential. Mind maps start with your central topic and lay out connecting ideas in an intricate yet easy-to-follow web that avoids the tangles of traditional whiteboard mapping.

We'll show you how to use Miro’s AI technology in mind maps. From the context menu:

  1. If you didn’t start by using a mind map template from the dashboard, create one by selecting “More apps” on the Creation toolbar (the vertical menu on the left), and search for “mind map.” Or search for the app from the Command palette.
  2. You’ll generate a mind map with a central topic surrounded by connecting idea bubbles with text boxes. Type your topics into each bubble to fill in the mind map. To create a connecting bubble from a topic, click the plus symbol.
  3. To create a mind map using Miro AI, click "Create with AI" on the left, then select "Mind map."
  4. Describe the mind map you want to create in the prompt window then click "Generate diagram."
  5. The AI will create new bubbles with suggested text already filled in.

Mind maps are especially helpful for problem-solving, planning, summarizing, and creating workflows. Here is an example of what a mind map looks like in Miro AI:

Sticky notes

Want to save some trees? Tired of your sticky notes unsticking and getting lost?

Miro AI’s online sticky notes give you the best of this dynamic note-taking format without the hassle of physically arranging, transporting, and finding room for your sticky note displays.

Template variations include sticky note packs (color-coded groups of notes to arrange as you please), sticky note tables (in multiple colors and arrangements for ultimate flexibility), and sticky note funnels (for visually distilling or expanding your ideas).

Here is an example of the sticky note pack template:

Sticky note pack template

Miro AI integrates AI features directly into this template. Users can leverage generative AI to create new related sticky notes, summarize multiple notes into a single note, and generate ideas from a prompt.

You can begin a Miro board with a sticky note template from the dashboard, or add a sticky note to your Miro board from the creation menu on the left side of your screen.

The following lists of steps outline how to use Miro AI technology in sticky notes.

From the context menu:

  1. Access the context menu by clicking on the sticky note element. Enter your idea (you need to enter text to activate the Miro AI feature).
  2. From the context menu, click the “Miro AI” icon.
  3. Click “More objects."
  4. Enter your idea again (or a new one), then click "Generate sticky notes."

These artificial intelligence features can be used to facilitate problem-solving and brainstorming. For example, using the Command palette, we generated ideas for the input “What are volunteer activities for a dog food company?”

Command palette

User stories

If you’re looking for a way to refine your products to meet your customers’ needs, you can visualize the consumer journey through user story mapping.

User Stories

This template starts with your user persona, and rows of sticky notes lay out the user activities, user tasks, and user stories for each product release. Users can collaborate in real time by interacting with the elements in the Miro board.

To use Miro AI’s AI features with a user story template, simply click on a sticky note to bring up the context menu. Use Miro AI to expand with questions, ideas, or topics. For example, you could fill in a sticky note for user activities and use Miro AI to generate questions to address within your user stories.

To find connections between user stories, such as identifying how many user stories share the same needs, use the Miro AI AI feature to “cluster by keyword” or “cluster by sentiment.” For example, within a user story map for an online shopping website, you could find how many user stories mention wanting automatic suggestions for similar products they would like.

If you also want Miro AI to help create user stories, you can generate user story cards on a blank board. Keep in mind that acceptance criteria, which are the requirements the developer fulfills to complete the user story, can only be added from the context menu.

Here’s how to generate user stories from cards:

From the context menu:

  1. From the Creation toolbar, click “More apps” and then use the search bar to find “card.” Click on your dashboard to open a prompt.
  2. Type your prompt into the card using this format: “As a (type of user), I want (goal) so that (outcome).” For example: “As an online shopper, I want targeted shopping suggestions so that I can find products I like faster.” Use one of Miro AI’s smart suggestions for inspiration.
  3. From the context menu, select “Miro AI.”
  4. Go to “Generate cards with user stories.”

From the Command palette:

  1. Open the Command palette by typing CMD + K (Mac) or CTRL + K (Windows). Or, go to the main menu and click “Command palette.”
  2. Select “Generate cards with user stories.”
  3. Type your user story prompt using this format: “As a (type of user), I want (goal) so that (outcome).” Or, use a suggestion.
  4. Your user story cards will appear on your board.

How to add acceptance criteria to cards:

  1. Select a generated user story card.
  2. From the context menu, select the “Miro AI” icon.
  3. Choose “Add acceptance criteria to this card.”
  4. The acceptance criteria will be added to the card as a list.

Sequence diagrams

Sequence diagrams give a step-by-step overview of your main topic through a chronological order of each user interaction. They’re especially helpful for mapping out usage scenarios and designs.

If you want to use Miro AI’s unified modeling language (UML) sequence diagram template, you’ll have to upgrade to the Enterprise or Business plan.

Sequence Diagram

Sequence diagrams can only be generated from the Command palette:

  1. In the toolbar on the left, click "Create with AI."
  2. Click "Choose diagram," then select "UML sequence."
  3. Use the prompt window to describe the sequence you need, then click "Generate the diagram."
  4. Your sequence diagram will appear on your board.

Generative AI and advanced features

Miro AI is more than a real-time whiteboard tool that visualizes workflows and project management. Its AI integrations elevate your creativity through its generative AI offerings.

Next, we cover Miro AI’s three core generative AI features—ideation, image generation, and code generation—and how they can be super-powered solutions for your workflows.

Ideation

Miro AI’s generative AI is especially useful for creative ideation. Instead of spending the time to brainstorm, save your mental energy and let artificial intelligence automatically create hundreds of ideas for you.

Imagine you’re a kitchen supply company brainstorming names for a new blender. You can create sticky notes with the names of similar products and let generative AI ideation suggest names.

Creative Ideation

Of course, you don’t have to choose any of the choices the AI offers, and none of them are likely to be exactly right. But the ability to generate countless examples can help you understand the kind of names that interest you. You can take this insight and apply it to another prompt in order to narrow down your search until you come up with just the right name.

For another use case, you can use the mind map to create ideas for new features to add to a puzzle gaming app.

While you may get some unusable content, the real benefit is in being able to visualize the options, in order to better understand what you think will be best.

Image generation

After the ideation process but before the project execution, you might want to see where your project management is headed to motivate your team and communicate your vision.

Sometimes, simply imagining what you want to create isn’t enough. To turn your preliminary ideas into visuals without a lot of time or financial commitment, use artificial intelligence image generation.

Miro AI’s AI can generate images from user prompts to help visualize ideas, concepts, and aesthetics.

New features making Miro AI even more powerful

Miro is constantly evolving its AI-powered features to help teams work faster and more collaboratively. Here are a few recent updates that can boost productivity and clarity across your boards:

  • Catch up (beta). This AI-powered feature summarizes what’s changed on your board since you last visited, including comment threads and new content. It helps busy team members quickly understand updates and prioritize action—no need to scroll through every sticky note or chat.
  • Synced copies. This update allows you to create linked versions of content across different boards. When you update the original, all synced copies reflect those changes automatically. It’s a powerful tool for maintaining consistency across product briefs, roadmaps, or stakeholder presentations.
  • Sticky stacks update. Sticky notes are one of Miro’s most-used features—and now they’re more customizable. Choose from small, medium, or large note sizes to better organize ideas during brainstorming and ideation sessions.

These upgrades continue to strengthen Miro’s position as a leading innovation workspace, helping teams streamline workflows without sacrificing creativity or clarity.

‍If you’d rather learn and problem-solve with fellow users, the Miro community platform offers even more support through forums, user-created templates, and FAQs.

Data privacy and concerns

Even though artificial intelligence has transformed ideation, content generation, and productivity, there are issues to be mindful of.

Users concerned about data privacy and intellectual property rights will be glad to know Miro AI doesn’t train its machine learning models using customer data. It also doesn’t allow its partners to feed consumer data into their own models without consent.

However, users do need to be aware that generative AI can produce inaccurate or biased information. And while AI can produce content in seconds, the first pass isn’t always the best. Users should check any outputs generated by Miro AI for accuracy, quality, and tone.
