Unleashing AI's Potential to Solve Our Shared Work Challenges

In a world increasingly informed by technology, artificial intelligence will play a pivotal role in shaping our future.

AI is (and has been) used nearly ubiquitously in everyday life for quite some time now, in applications such as search engines, movie recommendations, navigation apps and more. Yet, we have barely scratched the surface of all that AI can unlock for human interactions, collaboration, and work production, and are years away from seeing the truly transformative impact AI will have across our communities and society as a whole.

As with previous technological innovations like robotics or mobile phones, we are in the midst of an adoption curve. Early adopters will more readily adjust to interacting with their new AI “peers”; others will hold off for longer. The proliferation of AI throughout our society is unfolding like the famous Ernest Hemingway line: “Gradually, then suddenly.”

Having been in the artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision space for over two decades, including tenures at Google, Magic Leap, and founding my own AI startup Headroom, I have always been interested in exploring how AI could be used to transform how we work. This is an incredibly relevant space to be shaping: Everyone is familiar with work, and it is a central gravitational force in so many of our lives. I joined Upwork to be at the forefront of making work work for all of us—easier and more seamless, more productive without asking for more of our time, and more enjoyable. AI has the ability to fundamentally change how work gets done, leading to changes in what humans focus their talents on and have the capacity to accomplish. I’m most interested in how humans, together with AI, will be able to start to solve increasingly complex problems and complete increasingly complex work by combining our unique human strengths with sophisticated, intelligent technology.

There are three core trends that guide our AI innovation at Upwork, and will broadly shape what the future of work in the age of AI looks like:

  1. Productivity will increase exponentially as AI becomes embedded in our day-to-day work. Businesses and professionals will incorporate AI seamlessly into their workflows, and that will lead to exponential growth in productivity. While it’s early days, we are already starting to see the symbiotic relationship between humans and AI take shape. With AI increasingly handling routine tasks and providing valuable insights on command, professionals will get faster and more efficient. While it may sound like science fiction now, in the not-so-distant future, we will interact with a wide range of AIs in our daily lives, whether they’re augmented decision-making tools at work, intelligent tutoring systems for students, or widespread usage of autonomous vehicles, just as naturally as we humans interact with each other today.
  1. Jobs and skills will evolve. Concerns about technology-driven job loss are a familiar theme in modern society, dating back to the Industrial Revolution. The AI era is no exception. While some jobs will vanish or evolve, many others will emerge. The changing landscape of jobs and required skills will compel humans to adapt and evolve alongside it. Many traditional roles may be transformed with automation, leading to a shift in job requirements and necessitating upskilling or reskilling efforts. However, this transformation will also create new opportunities and demand for roles that complement AI capabilities, like data annotation and curation specialists or AI security analysts. As AI handles routine tasks, humans will increasingly focus on tasks requiring emotional intelligence, creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving—areas where human ingenuity excels. This will lead to a restructuring of the skills market and a net increase in the variety and complexity of available roles, progressing humans forward.
  1. Humans will focus on more complex problems. If we can free up our time by using AI as an intelligent companion to help us in our day-to-day tasks, what more complex or longstanding problems might we then be able to turn our attention to, and start to solve? We will have the latitude to redirect our energy and expertise to tackling the most intricate, strategic and pressing challenges we face in the organizations we are a part of. Moreover, AI-driven data analysis and predictive modeling can help us identify patterns, anticipate future trends, and develop solutions we have not yet thought of.

Mindful AI catalyzes this future

A future of work where humans solve increasingly complex world problems is predicated on the idea that we create AI that does not replace humans, but works for and helps humans achieve their full potential.

At Upwork, we’re hard at work developing Uma™, Upwork’s Mindful AI, which we announced today. Built on top of industry-leading large language models (LLMs) and customized with Upwork platform data, we’re developing Uma to underpin our entire platform and, increasingly, serve as a conversational Upwork companion to our customers.

Today, Uma already powers a number of key experiences in the hiring and matching process on Upwork that are critical to businesses and freelancers completing more high-quality work. Uma will continue to learn, gain context, and get smarter and more precise over time, and eventually, Uma will serve as a constant, intelligent companion for our customers, and power the complete Upwork experience—an experience that supports the future of work we’ve been describing.

By “mindful,” we mean that Uma is designed and developed in alignment with Upwork’s Mindful AI Principles and to be:

  • Human-centered: Building human-centered AI requires that it works with humans, not instead of humans. Mindful AI is designed to enhance the capabilities and experiences of humans, from project conception to implementation and beyond. This approach ensures that AI serves the interest of people, helping them deliver incredibly high-quality work, and focus on the parts of their work that are uniquely human, and therefore, the most highly valued.
  • Reliable and scalable: To develop an AI system that can scale and be used by millions of people, it must be reliable. We’re aiming to create a robust and fault-tolerant architecture capable of managing massive volumes of data without compromising performance or reliability. AI employs advanced algorithms for data processing, analysis, and decision-making, ensuring accurate and efficient results across diverse tasks and scenarios. Mindful AI is built to continuously learn and adapt to evolving user needs and preferences through iterative feedback loops and adaptive algorithms.
  • Trustworthy, accountable and transparent: Transparency and accountability are paramount to mindful AI. Humans should be able to trust the outputs of an AI system. They need to understand how it works and why it makes certain decisions. Mindful AI must follow guidelines and principles that prioritize fairness, privacy, and inclusivity to empower confidence in the people who work alongside and rely on it.
  • Responsible: Mindful AI must align with fundamental human values and respect the rights and dignity of individuals and communities. Responsible and ethical innovation fosters a sustainable and equitable future where mindful AI serves as a tool for empowerment and societal progress rather than a source of harm or exploitation.

Uma, Upwork’s Mindful AI, is our starting point. Today, we are focused on the first steps of the work equation, supercharging discovery, search and match with mindful AI so businesses and freelancers can get started working together faster and more effectively than ever before. But our vision is far bigger. With Uma, we will expand into mindful AI-powered collaboration and work management, fundamentally reimagining the full Upwork experience to drive better business outcomes for customers and realize this vision for a better future of work.

Powering progress in work and beyond

AI is undeniably going to be further and further intertwined with work. We have an incredible opportunity to shape a better future of work and progress in solving our most intractable problems with the help of AI, but it requires developing and leveraging mindful AI. AI that works for and helps humans lays the foundation for all of us to be empowered to take on the next evolution of work.

Upwork is uniquely positioned to develop and train mindful AI that will enable an intuitive, streamlined, and high-quality work experience for businesses and professionals that progresses our ways of working forward. We have a vast trove of data accumulated over the last two decades from a global platform that has generated millions of relevant data points across the full spectrum of work, from job postings to hires, payments, feedback and more. We’re excited to see what happens when we put the power of that data in the hands of our customers through Uma, and support them in unleashing their full potential.
