My name is Nicola Obertik, though most people call me Nikki. I have been teaching and working with children in the Foundation Phase for over 20 years. When teaching I would often introduce a lesson or theme using a book. I love using the illustrations to capture children’s imaginations and I would try and make sure that the books I used promoted critical thinking, taught the children something new, as well as being entertained. I created a book series focusing on the unique wildlife in our country and mingling it with an element of fantasy. African Fairy Adventure series. These stories also aim to teach children about caring and helping others so that all benefit. They inform children about our wildlife, the different landscapes, bio-diversity and how we all co-exist in nature. While each story is ‘An African Fairy Adventure’ and has a theme and different animals, they can also be read as standalone books. These books are written, hand illustrated and formatted by myself. ‘Imi’s Sore Tooth- An African Fairy Adventure Book’ ‘A Night-time Adventure - An African Fairy Adventure Book’ ‘The Cheeky Drongo and the Meerkats - An African Fairy Adventure” ‘The Lonely Weaver’s Best Nest - An African Fairy Adventure’ ‘The Perfect Gift - An African Fairy Adventure’ ‘Amahle’s Choice’ (This is a standalone book aimed at preschool children) Illustration work Since then, I have illustrated numerous books for other authors in a variety of styles and media, from paint, pencil to digital art. I was also privileged to be part of the campaign ‘Our Stories, Your Language’ launched with Wimpy and Ethnikids. I illustrated ‘The Baboon, the Dassie and the Berries’ written by Bianca Flanders. In December 2023 ‘Shoma and the Stars Activity Book’ with Sho Majozi was launched. I was thrilled to be asked to design the activities and format this book with the wonderful illustrator Katlego Keokgale. I have just finished Illustrating a beautiful children’s book ‘Oh-Me-Oh-My’ by Michelle Richardson- co author of Motherhood Honesty.
