I have worked as a graphic design artist for over 7 years, mainly in full-time jobs and have just made the switch to freelancing. I am proficient in most of the Adobe Creative Suite, my main applications being Illustrator and Procreate. I have worked in various parts of the industry, though have spent most of my time in print. At the beginning of my career, I worked as an in-house graphic designer for a screen-printing company where I worked daily on bringing clients' visions to life. I created many custom t-shirt designs in a variety of styles - from clean geometric to groovy hand-illustrated. After a year with the company, I went on to manage the entire art department, in which I had 6-8 artists underneath me. Where this was largely an administration-based job, it was also my job to gear the team creatively and ensure we were ahead of trends. I then went to work solely with a non-profit organization based in the heart of the surf world. I worked as part of their media team, until similarly, after about a year I then took over the whole department. This included creating all their marketing materials, shooting and creating content, managing their online presence, and creating merchandise for their sister business, a coffee shop. I believe what sets me apart as an artist is my people skills. I love working with people and being able to bring client's ideas to life. I am always open to feedback, as I want my clients to always walk away loving what has been made for them.

Graphic design outsourcing in the United States: a hiring guide

The United States is a mature graphic design market shaped by decades of commercial branding, advertising, and digital media work. With 265,900 graphic designer jobs reported in 2024 and strong concentrations in specialized design services, advertising, and self-employment, the U.S. offers deep talent for brand identity, packaging, marketing collateral, presentation design, and digital creative projects. Hiring graphic designers in the United States often makes sense when you need commercially polished work, native English collaboration, or designers who already understand U.S. brand conventions and audience expectations.

Why hire graphic designers in the United States?

Graphic designers in the United States bring experience shaped by a large, professionalized creative industry. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 18% of U.S. graphic designers are self-employed, which reflects a freelance-ready workforce accustomed to working directly with clients on business-facing projects. The talent base spans branding, packaging, print design, web graphics, social media content, and presentation design, with many freelancers having backgrounds in agency, corporate, or startup environments.

For clients based in the U.S. or serving U.S. audiences, hiring domestically can simplify communication, reduce turnaround friction, and improve alignment on brand tone and visual style. U.S.-based designers typically work in the same or adjacent time zones, which can support faster review cycles for time-sensitive campaigns or collaborative projects involving writers, developers, or project managers.

Cost considerations for hiring graphic designers in the United States

Graphic designers in the United States typically price above the global platform average on Upwork. While graphic designers on Upwork overall commonly charge $15 to $35 per hour with an average around $25 per hour, experienced U.S.-based freelancers often price above the platform median, especially for branding systems, packaging design, and art direction work. For context, the BLS reports a median annual wage of $61,300 for U.S. graphic designers in May 2024, which translates to roughly $29 per hour before overhead or benefits.

Entry-level freelancers in the U.S. may price closer to the platform median, while mid-level and senior designers with strong portfolios and specialized skills tend to command higher rates. Premium pricing often appears for brand identity systems, packaging design, motion graphics, or projects requiring close creative collaboration with internal teams.

Tips for hiring graphic designers in the United States

To hire effectively, focus on portfolio fit, process alignment, and clear project requirements. The following tips can help you evaluate U.S.-based graphic designers more precisely:

  • Review portfolios for style and project-type match. Look for samples that align with your deliverables, whether that means brand identity systems, product packaging, social media graphics, or presentation decks. A designer's past work is one of the clearest signals of what they can deliver.

  • Define your project scope before posting. Include your audience, goals, deliverables, visual references, and any required tools or file formats. Clear briefs attract better-matched candidates and reduce revision cycles.

  • Confirm software proficiency. U.S. graphic designers commonly work in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, along with tools like Figma, Canva, or specialized packaging software. Verify that your candidate's toolset aligns with your workflow.

  • Ask about collaboration and handoff processes. If your project involves coordination with copywriters, developers, or project managers, ask how the designer typically manages feedback and file delivery.

  • Use Upwork trust signals to shortlist candidates. A Job Success Score of 90% or higher signals strong client satisfaction. Top Rated represents the top 10% of talent, Top Rated Plus the top 3%, and Expert-Vetted the top 1% after additional screening.

  • Consider milestone-based contracts for staged creative work. For identity packages, packaging systems, or multi-deliverable projects, fixed-price milestones let you review work at each stage before releasing funds.

The rates and information provided in this article are based on current data and industry sources available at the time of publication. Frequently asked questions

Are graphic designers in the United States experienced with international brands?

Graphic designers in the United States often have experience serving established brands and business clients across a range of industries. Featured U.S. profiles on Upwork reference work with startups, national companies, global media organizations, and agency or corporate backgrounds. When evaluating candidates, look for portfolio samples and client reviews that reflect the brand environments and audience expectations relevant to your project.

How do graphic designer rates in the United States compare to U.S. hiring costs?

Freelance graphic designer rates in the United States can compare favorably with full-time hiring when you account for overhead, benefits, and recruiting costs. Freelance hiring offers flexibility for project-based or seasonal work, while full-time hires may make more sense for ongoing, high-volume design needs. The cost comparison depends on project scope, seniority, and how long you need dedicated design support.

Can I find graphic designers in the United States experienced with branding and packaging?

Graphic designers in the United States commonly specialize in branding, brand identity, brand guidelines, packaging design, label design, and print collateral. When reviewing candidates, look for portfolios that include identity systems, packaging mockups, or style guides. Ask about their process for developing brand assets and how they handle feedback rounds on high-visibility deliverables.

What should I look for when evaluating graphic designers in the United States?

When evaluating graphic designers in the United States, start with portfolio relevance by matching the freelancer's past work to your content style and business context. Confirm their familiarity with your preferred design software and any collaborative tools you use. Review client feedback for patterns around communication, reliability, and revision responsiveness. For brand-facing or high-stakes projects, consider a short paid test project to evaluate quality and working style before committing to a larger engagement.
