An expert book designer with fourteen years experience working with self-publishing authors and helping them create great looking books that people really want to buy. I enjoy all aspects of book design, but book interior design is my real passion as I have a special sense for shaping the perfect interior layout for each book. I am highly reliable and detail-oriented and closely follow the author’s requirements in order to bring his/her vision to life, but I’m also completely comfortable to work with little input and provide my own creative perspective. Client satisfaction and high quality work are my main priorities. Please check my portfolio for examples of book design, typesetting, and cover design.

I have been involved in publishing as an author, editor, book designer, and publisher for over 15 years. I consider myself an expert in self-publishing for both print and eBook formats. I have extensive knowledge of Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), Smashwords, IngramSpark, Lulu, and other print and eBook platforms. I have published over 400 print and eBooks on my accounts, plus countless books with clients. I offer page design, eBook conversions, editing and proofreading, and extensive self-publishing knowledge that can take your project from draft to publication. I often take on a project management role for my clients, offering book shepherding, helping hire cover designers, and going through the many options and considerations of being an independent author or small publisher. I operated, promoted, edited, and funded Leaf Garden Press for over 10 years, where we published 20+ books alongside an arts and literature magazine. I have worked with many other small presses on similar projects as an editor, designer, and publishing consultant focusing on fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. My publication credits include three books (not including 50+ ghostwritten books), several anthologies, and about 40-50 appearances in online and print magazines. I also produce and publish books based on market research and Amazon product page optimization techniques. Although I do not offer sales guarantees, I bring what I know about the Amazon system to each job. I am always onboarding new clients, love working with new authors, and strive to provide a personalized experience that meets the need of each book project and client. --- Availability: I do my best to make myself available to my clients on a regular schedule of Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM PST. --- Publishing, Formatting, and Book Design Services: I offer page design for print books, and I have a high-level understanding of print-on-demand requirements, limitations, and considerations. And If you're working with offset printers, all I need is the specifications your printer requires. I also offer eBook conversions for Kindle and ePub formats, which are typically appropriate for any distribution method. --- Self-publishing Suggestion: For the print edition, I generally suggest Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, the most direct route to having your print book sold via Amazon, the world's largest online retailer of books. If you are seeking wider distribution, we can simultaneously work with IngramSpark. However, not every book project is the same, and sometimes my advice may lead you to other printing and distribution options. Kindle Direct Publishing will have your print book and Kindle eBook released on Amazon. If you wish to expand eBook distribution outside of Amazon Kindle, I generally suggest using IngramSpark or Smashwords. Both will distribute your book to Apple (iBooks), Barnes and Noble (Nook), Kobo, and many other retailers. This keeps the process simpler than trying to submit the book to each retailer individually and helps alleviate some of the overhead costs involved with certain retailers. I can effectively walk you through the entire self-publishing process: from editing to formatting to ISBNs, copyrights, LCCNs, categories and keywords, submissions, and more. I can be your right-hand man. --- Editing Services: For editing and proofreading, I suggest the use of Microsoft Word's track changes features or the use of commenting/annotations for PDFs. This allows you to personally review my suggestions or changes and decide if you want to accept them. Editing and proofreading include checking sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, formatting errors, and much more. I am not able to accept all editing/proofreading work, and I will be honest if I do not believe I'm a good fit on your particular manuscript. I pride myself on standing behind my work, and I am always happy to discuss your project and my edits (even if I've already been paid). --- Free Consultation: Are you confused or unsure what you really need? No worries! I offer free consultation on any publishing projects. I'll go as far as taking a look at your book or other projects and tell you my initial thoughts on what your project needs. So even if you don't hire me, I can happily point you in the right direction and help educate you about the process. --- Rates: I will provide an itemized estimate before any work begins. This typically includes a final price range, and as long as no new work is added, we do not go over the top price of my bid. I will need to see your book or project as it exists and discuss a general idea of what services you require. If needed, I can sign a non-disclosure agreement first. --- Thanks for your consideration! Is there anything I haven't covered here? Simply contact me, and there's a good chance I can help you!

I'm a professional publishing consultant, editor, and writing coach with years of experience in the publishing industry. When working with you, my mission is to be your go-to collaborator for your project by remaining highly focused on your needs and by providing high-quality deliverables tailored to your project's goals. We can begin working together at any stage of your publishing journey as my skills and services include writing coaching, beta reading, editorial assessments, developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, and publishing consulting. Having worked at two university presses, I have experience with manuscripts of all types including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, business, and education. As a freelancer, I've also worked with fantasy, romance, crime fiction, and other commercial genres. I also have a BFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Management in the Creative Economy. As your editor, I'm dedicated to helping you develop high-quality content that meets all of your goals. I understand the effort that goes into your writing and your desire for your content to be the very best it can be. Therefore, my deliverables include not only the edited manuscript but also edit reports and collaborative revision hours that are all focused on elevating your manuscript. As your publishing consultant, I can guide you through the digital and print publishing process to deliver your content successfully, all while building your author or company brand. Together, we'll navigate your project through the independent, hybrid, or traditional publishing landscapes. I can develop a strong publishing strategy for your content and aid with project management for various steps of the process—from performing market research to executing sales strategies. As your writing coach, I can guide you through the writing process by providing exercises and techniques. I can identify the weaknesses and strengths of your writing and then provide solutions for how to eliminate those weak points and enhance your strengths. My goal is to be someone you can bounce your writing ideas off of and someone who supports and challenges you as a writer. If you're interested in working with me or have any questions, just send me a message telling me about your project and we'll go from there! Types of editing: Developmental Editing A developmental edit focuses on the big-picture elements of your content such as plot, character development, pacing, narrative, etc. For nonfiction books, it focuses on the structure of your content, what objectives need to be met by each section, delivery, etc. If your content is completed but hasn't undergone any revision yet, a developmental edit is where you want to start. When doing a developmental edit of your work, I provide you with a commented manuscript that highlights every suggested revision, edit report(s) with detailed explanations of issues and proposed solutions, and collaborative revision hours to discuss the edits. Line Editing Line editing is a high-level edit that focuses on the language, tone, pace, descriptions, voice, and writing style throughout the manuscript. A line edit includes a mix of direct edits and recommendations for additional content or cuts. When doing a line edit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Copyediting A copyedit focuses on the readability of your content by correcting for grammar, inconsistencies, awkward phrasing, sentence structure, repetitions, etc. When doing a copyedit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Proofreading Proofreading focuses on correcting typos, spelling, punctuation, and other small errors. This is the last phase of editing. When proofreading your content, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style).

I am pleased to discuss and schedule edits in advance! It's highly recommended that you contact me at least 90 days before your preferred deadline. I am currently scheduled through March 15, 2023. My clients include indie writers, first-time novelists seeking agent representation, memoirists and activists, two sisters publishing their late mother's book, a romance author with 10+ novels, and multiple finalists in international short story competitions. With a thorough yet encouraging style, I edit fiction in all genres, as well as articles, creative nonfiction, and memoirs. "I can't say enough about the timely and thorough manuscript evaluation I received from Therese. Her detail-oriented critique not only provided me with invaluable suggestions with regards to the overall structure of my story but, just as important, also touched upon how to fine-tune the subtle aspects of my novel to create a more superior read. I look forward to utilizing her skill set again during the editing phase." -Alex F. COPYEDITING With a Copyediting Certificate from the University of San Diego-Extension Program, I work from a thorough knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, while flexibly accommodating author preferences. LINE-BY-LINE EDITING Going beyond grammatical corrections, I analyze your message and tailor your writing for clear, vivid flow of ideas. My feedback evaluates pacing, content, and word choice. "Therese copyedited my novel and did a great job. She offered many helpful suggestions and continues to respond to questions in a timely manner. I highly recommend Therese Arkenberg if you need fast and accurate editing." -Michael E. Kmiotek DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING My inline comments include feedback on plot and character development. For a deeper evaluation of plot and character arcs and overall style, I provide 3-8 page Developmental Memos. These can be done before line edits, since a story may change in development. "The memo alone is like a writing seminar targeted at my particular story. Therese Arkenberg' insights and editing skills were nothing short of remarkable. She seemed to know my characters better than I did. I was most fortunate to have found her." -T. Hahm PUBLISHING STRATEGY Find anthologies, journals, and contests. Research literary agents and prepare your query letter and synopsis. Build a strategy to promote your work. Format manuscripts for self-publishing on Createspace or Lulu, Kindle, Smashwords, and other distributors. TIMEFRAME Based on my current schedule and the needs of a particular project, short stories can take as little as 48 hours, novels between two weeks and two months. CLIENT TESTIMONIALS: Jeff Jorczak (Cody Leet): "Therese was one of the beta readers for my new novel Spheria. The depth of her analysis and feedback were invaluable. She caught some very subtle continuity issues that I had not even thought of. Her love of sci-fi and technology also helped me in particular since this book was heavy on science. Last, the detail of her notes was amazing...I already asked her if we could working together again on my future projects. (and if you use her as a result of this recommendation, I get first dibs!)" Alero Dabor: “I do not think I would have completed my memoirs without Thesere. From the moment I started working with Therese, she has offered invaluable suggestions that empowered my story. Her understanding of what I was striving to achieve is truly commendable. Therese is an exceptional editor. I will recommend Therese to anyone I know who is looking for an editor.” Cynthia "Cyn" Duby: "I was very leery of hiring an editor and now I don't know what to do without one! And, there will never be another editor for me than Therese. She is extremely thorough, makes excellent suggestions, and has tightened up my novel, improved the way the story arcs, and has given me, not only global suggestions, but also incredible line by line edits. My writing has vastly improved and my confidence has grown immensely. She not only is a very talented writer and editor, but she also knows the business and, knowing that I seek publishing, has that in her mind when editing and when we correspond. My manuscripts will never leave home without her expert eye catching my errors, my repeated phrasing, and cutting the unnecessary words and confusing phrasing...Be prepared for corrections, be prepared to hear that there are changes, and then smile knowing every change, every edit is making your work the very best it can be." Zahara Heckscher: "Therese is a talented writer and editor. I highly recommend her for manuscript review. She provided essential big picture suggestions for my novel with excellent ideas for conflict and character development as well as a close read with page by page comments to improve the draft. She made excellent and specific suggestions that improved my novel—and helped me strengthen my craft as a writer."

"By far the best ghost writer I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with... My advice is to stop scrolling through Upwork right now and hire this amazing ghost-writer." "Alethea is an incredibly talented writer and really such a nice, communicative and down to earth person to work with. She has a strong vision and creativity and clearly cares about her client’s happiness with her work." "Alethia did a great job of capturing my voice. I have already booked more business due to her work." Have you noticed that suddenly everyone's copy sounds the same? AI is supposed to revolutionise the way we do business but don't believe the hype. AI may be able to work fast when it comes to generating copy and books, but your potential clients and readers don't care how quickly you wrote something. They care about how you make them feel. They want to know you can solve their problems. They want the reassurance of knowing they're in safe hands with you. A computer can't give that reassurance. All it will do is look at what's already out there and regurgitate the same old, same old. What's more, you can't copywriter work that has been AI generated. While you might think you're saving time and money by going the AI route, you could be setting yourself up for an expensive fall. Your clients deserve better - and so do you. As an experienced writer of over a decade, I know exactly how to use words to achieve the one goal all businesses care about: increasing your bottom line. I write from experience, which means you don't get text scraped from the internet and paraphrased. You get original material that brings a fresh approach so whether you want to build a publishing house or grow your business, you know that you'll stand out from the crowd. No one else will be doing what you do. I understand how to craft a blurb that compels someone to pick up your book. I know how to write that book so it's unlike anything else on the market. I have the skills to put together landing pages, emails, websites, etc. that convert and support your business goals. You need to stand out for all the right reasons. You need the human touch. You need to show that there's a person behind your business and you're not yet another get-rich-quick, soulless company looking for the fastest route to make money. That’s where I come in. I take the time to truly understand your business and target market. You can trust me to capture your corporate image and present you in the best possible light to meet your goals. Whether you want to attract new clients, promote products or simply raise your profile, I’ve got the skills you need. I'll help you maximise the impact of your corporate copy so your business sees the results you want. My services are all tailored towards ensuring you get text that truly represents your brand. I specialise in: * Non-fiction books that establish authority and provide genuine value to the reader * Engaging, gripping fiction * Web content * Taglines / Titles * Voice over scripts * Article writing * Blogging * Creative consulting I understand the importance of consistent branding and the need to work in line with your mission statement, as well as how to effectively promote your USP to your audience. I know how to connect with your dream clients and build connection with them so you're their go-to person/business. What’s more, I have ideas. Lots of them. If you need help with a concept or theme or you just don’t know where to start, I can give you plenty of options to choose from. Don’t like choosing? Don’t worry! I’ll guide you through the process and make it easy for you to make the right decisions for your business. I appreciate how hard it can be to find just the right freelancer when the choice can seem overwhelming. I'm always available to talk you through your options and discuss your business goals to ensure you get exactly what you need first time, every time. That’s why so many of my clients keep coming back to me for all their copywriting needs. So if you want to make the right impression on your current and potential customers, click the button at the top right hand side of the page and invite me to submit a proposal to you. I'll be more than happy to discuss your project. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi, there! Eight years ago I started my own publishing business. I wrote a series of 11 books that I planned to sell on Amazon. I thought writing the books was going to be the most challenging part … What I didn’t know back: MARKETING is the BIGGEST challenge of all! During these last years, I’ve hired (and fired) about 15 marketing "experts" and spent thousands of dollars—with no significant results. I finally realized that I needed to learn the book-marketing business myself—and create my own methods for boosting sales and making my business grow. These days, I have more than 30 titles in my company’s catalog. And they are #1 best sellers on Amazon—top rated in their categories. I know how to make that happen. I‘m now able to not only CREATE and produce good books (the easy part, believe me), but to also successfully market and sell books! I have a great marketing team! And now, my team and I are ready to help you take your most precious book and make it not only an interesting read (for friends and family), but also a best seller and a source of pride (and income) for you—the author. My team and I know Amazon. We know how to work with Amazon across all channels and programs in order to maximize sales (and yes, you need to work in several parallel channels— one is not enough). We're experts in Amazon-sponsored ads. And we know how to build a dedicated audience using social media and other web-based channels. But the most important thing: We have expertise and experience in DOING this successfully ourselves—and not just TALKING about doing. We have our own audience (followers, distribution lists, etc.) and infrastructure (representatives, warehouses, etc.) that can be a great help to YOU too. Five years ago, I spent so much time—and way too much money—trying to find the right expert to market my books. Now, I want to help others find a faster path to success. So … how can I help you?

Hi, I’m Matt and I'm UpWork's top Book Marketer, so I can GUARANTEE results. With over 12 years of experience in the publishing industry, I’ve marketed 400+ books and sold over 1 MILLION copies. (feel free to ask for examples of books I've marketed for past clients) From my years of experience, even if your book is in an early-stage, it's imperative to plan your marketing efforts - and that's where I come in. To keep it simple, I can get your book in the hands of thousands of Book Bloggers / Book Youtubers / Book Podcasts who will share it with their huge number of followers, and I can get your book sold inside thousands of Bookstores and on Library shelves.  I've worked with every genre, both fiction and non-fiction, so there's no book I can't handle. You can see a multitude of positive reviews from my clients here on my Profile page, as well as screenshots of the total Amazon reviews gained from my marketing for some of my past clients. My 4-step marketing system is simple and very “turn-key” for my clients, with each step being optional: 1. I supply you with the contact list files of your choice: + 850 Bookstores + 2,730 Libraries + 420 Book Review Blogs + 55 Book Review Podcasts + 180 Book Review Youtubers + 420 Mommy Blogs + 265 Children’s Book Review Blogs + 100 Parenting Podcasts + 12 Parenting/Kindergarten Youtubers + 120 Kindergarten/First Grade Teacher Blogs + 100 Facebook Groups 2. I write Custom Outreach Emails to each list for you 3. I send out the thousands of emails for you and I'm able to guarantee an Open Rate of 40% - 60% 4. The contacts then buy, review, and share your book I also offer an incredibly in-depth 40-page Book Marketing Guide that goes through literally every tactic that authors should be doing to market their books, including where to do these things, when to do these things, and how best to do them. A bit more about me: I'm also an award-winning author myself with multiple bestseller books - one of which is currently being produced as a feature film. So if you're interested in landing a TV/feature film deal for your book (if it’s a narrative), we can discuss that as well. Looking forward to chatting! - Matt
