Connects are how you can get noticed by clients on Upwork. They're your virtual token that you'll use to do everything from bidding on jobs to running ads. We’ve developed a planning tool to help you budget your Connects and figure out how many you should buy and what to spend them on.

Frequently asked questions
Upwork's virtual tokens are called Connects, which freelancers can purchase in bundles or in custom amounts. Each Connect costs $0.15 (USD). Connects help you decide how best to promote your business: bid on proposals, promote your availability, or increase your chances of getting noticed by boosting your proposals or profile.
Spend Connects to show potential clients that you’re serious about your business and invested in building a working relationship with them. These virtual tokens are an investment toward your freelance career. Connects can help you win more work, increase your earning power, and build longer-lasting relationships with clients who value you.
Proposal submissions and ads are paid with Connects, a virtual token on Upwork that can be purchased in bundles or an amount of your choice. Freelancers use Connects to submit proposals and purchase ad products including Boosted Proposals, Boosted ProfileBETA, and Availability Badge. Connects cannot be exchanged for cash.
- Connects cost $0.15 (USD) each and are sold in bundles or a custom amount (10 minimum).
- To purchase additional Connects:
- Go to Settings
- Select Memberships & Connects
- Click Add Connects
- Once you’ve selected the bundle you wish to purchase, click Add Connects and your account will automatically be charged.
There are three ways freelancers get Connects on Upwork:
- Free Connects: Freelancers get free Connects every month to reach more clients. Free Connects are given on the first day of your billing cycle, which you can check on your account page.
- Buy Connects: Connects cost $0.15 (USD) each. You can buy them in bundles or choose a custom amount (at least 10). If you upgrade to a Freelancer Plus account, you’ll get 70 additional Connects (plus the 10 free ones).
- Earn Connects: We like to help freelancers succeed on Upwork, and one way we do that is by rewarding free Connects for certain milestones. Here are some ways you can earn bonus Connects:
- You’ll receive 40 free Connects when you register with Upwork for the first time
- You’ll receive 30 free Connects if you earn a Rising Talent badge
- You’ll receive free Connects (the number can vary depending on how many Connects you spent, the budget, demand, and more) when you win an interview with an established client on Upwork.
- You’ll get a one-time Connects bonus if you complete an Upwork Skill Certification
Yes. Connects expire one year from the date of issue.
Yes, you won’t need Connects:
- When a client invites you to bid.
- When a client sends you an offer.
- When a client purchases your Project Catalog project.
- When you send a proposal within an Enterprise Talent Cloud.
The amount of Connects needed to apply to a job is determined by a range of factors, including project size, scope and market demand.
