Editor, book designer, and publishing consultant

I have been involved in publishing as an author, editor, book designer, and publisher for over 15 years. I consider myself an expert in self-publishing for both print and eBook formats. I have extensive knowledge of Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), Smashwords, IngramSpark, Lulu, and other print and eBook platforms. I have published over 400 print and eBooks on my accounts, plus countless books with clients. I offer page design, eBook conversions, editing and proofreading, and extensive publishing knowledge that can take your project from draft to publication. I often take on a project management role for my clients, offering book shepherding, helping hire cover designers, and going through the many options and considerations of being an independent author or small publisher. I operated, promoted, edited, and funded Leaf Garden Press for over 10 years, where we published 20+ books alongside an arts and literature magazine. I have worked with many other small presses on similar projects as an editor, designer, and publishing consultant focusing on fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. My publication credits include three books (not including 50+ ghostwritten books), several anthologies, and about 40-50 appearances in online and print magazines. I also produce and publish books based on market research and Amazon product page optimization techniques. Although I do not offer sales guarantees, I bring what I know about the Amazon ecosystem to each job. I am always onboarding new clients, love working with new authors, and work my best to provide a personalized experience that meets the need of each book project and client. --- Availability: I do my best to make myself available to my clients on a regular schedule of Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM PST. --- Publishing, formatting, and book design services: I offer page design for print books, and I have a high-level understanding of print-on-demand requirements, limitations, and considerations. And If you're working with offset printers, all I need is the specifications as your printer requires. I also offer eBook conversions for Kindle and ePub formats, which are typically appropriate for any distribution method. My suggestion for publishing a book is generally going to be the following: Format the eBook for the best possible compatibility between devices by creating Smashwords and Kindle Direct Publishing versions. This high-compatibility formatting and the use of these two platforms means your book becomes available for almost any store that sells and any device that reads eBooks. For the print edition, I generally suggest Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, the most direct route to having your print book sold via Amazon, the world's largest online retailer of books. If you are seeking wider distribution, we can simultaneously work with IngramSpark. However, not every book project is the same, and sometimes my advice may lead you to other printing and distribution options. Kindle Direct Publishing will have your print book and Kindle eBook released on Amazon. Smashwords will distribute your book to Apple (iBooks), Barnes and Noble (Nook), Kobo, and many other retailers. This keeps the process simpler than trying to submit the book to each retailer individually and helps alleviate some of the overhead costs involved with certain retailers. I can effectively walk you through the entire self-publishing process: from editing to formatting to ISBNs, copyrights, LCCNs, categories and keywords, submissions, and more. I can be your right-hand man. --- Editing services: For editing and proofreading, I suggest the use of Microsoft Word's track changes features or the use of commenting/annotations for PDFs. This allows you to personally review my suggestions or changes and decide if you want to accept them. Editing and proofreading include checking sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, formatting errors, and much more. I pride myself on standing behind my work, and I am always happy to discuss your project and my edits (even if I've already been paid). --- Free consultation: Are you confused or unsure what you really need? No worries! I offer free consultation on any publishing projects. I'll go as far as taking a look at your book or other projects and tell you my initial thoughts on what your project needs. So even if you don't hire me, I can happily point you in the right direction and help educate you about the process. --- Rates: I will provide an itemized estimate before any work begins. This typically includes a final price range, and as long as no new work is added, we do not go over the top price of my bid. I will need to see your book or project as it exists and discuss a general idea of what services you require. If needed, I can sign a non-disclosure agreement first. --- Thanks for your consideration! Is there anything I haven't covered here? Simply contact me, and there's a good chance I can help you!

"I cannot speak highly enough of Robert and his professionalism, knowledge, experience, attention to detail and genuine caring personality. Robert made this process fun, comfortable and easy. The project had been bogged down for months and as soon as I hired Robert, it hit hyperspeed and was finished within weeks. I would hire Robert again without hesitation and have already referred another author."

"Robert was a dream to work with. He identified our problem, let us know it was fixable, not only helped us fix it but improved many things we were unaware could be improved upon. He gave us an extraordinary work product, all the while being so pleasant and knowledgeable to work with. His skill set went far and beyond what we expected, his quality of work and his timeliness was exceptional. He was easy to communicate with and he explained everything to where we understood it and he could accomplish it. Literally could not have done our project without him and will be forever grateful."

"Robert was prompt, professional, and flexible. I really appreciate how he kept the spirit of what I was trying to do but removed the unprofessional elements and bad grammar. I couldn't believe he was willing to do both the copy editing and design work in Canva (not the best possible platform to work in). However, he did it, did it well and, in short, he made me look more professional and polished than I really am! That was exactly what I was hoping for."

"Robert is an excellent partner for anyone at the final stages of their book and need help to launch it successfully. He patiently gave my book a valuable last proofread, walked me through the somewhat daunting setup process on Amazon and Spark, reviewed the proofing (which can show flaws that need correction) and helped place the book within the Amazon categories to give my book the best chance to reach readers. Stellar performance, all with a great, calming disposition. Highly Recommend."

"Robert was simply amazing and went WAY beyond our expectations in helping us edit, prepare and launch our very first book! We are rookie authors and launching our first book was an overwhelming task because it's not as cut and dry as one may think. But Robert was extremely patient, helpful, and super responsive with all the questions we had throughout the process (which were a lot lol). I've been on Upwork for many many years and have worked with a ton of people and I have to say Robert is in my top 5 because his level of service is extremely rare and hard to find. Many contractors are so hyper-focused on how much money can they make off a client which I can respect because we all have to make a living, but many times that becomes the only focus, and the quality of service takes a nosedive, hence, why many contractors are not as successful as they could be. I will not be surprised if Robert has to increase his rates due to being in high demand. We highly highly recommend Robert 1000%."
