I have a background in law, and worked for 17 years as a legal researcher and writer. I was never licensed as a lawyer but functioned essentially as one, researched and wrote about hundreds, if not thousands, of subjects. By my own estimate I read approximately 5,000 appellate court opinions during the course of my litigation work and wrote certainly more than 1,000 memoranda for internal use in the law office or for filing at court. My areas of expertise include personal injury litigation plaintiff and defense, medical malpractice plaintiff, contract law especially contracts of insurance, bad faith litigation defense, coverage opinion letters, administrative law defense. My expertise is primarily in California law, to a lesser extent U.S. federal law. I helped prepare numerous cases for trial and am thoroughly familiar with all aspects of trial preparation, and have extensive knowledge of both procedural and substantive law. For the past eight years I taught English in China and Azerbaijan, mostly to professional adults but also to teenagers. I had my own business in China for five years as a private tutor, also worked at various training centers and high schools. I wrote a book, "Legal English", for use by Chinese lawyers, designed primarily to introduce them to legal vocabulary. Apart from my legal work, I have a varied background. I worked for seven years as a welder in California shipyards.  I rebuilt a Volkswagen engine using the popular Idiot's Guide to Keeping Your Volkswagen Alive. I have broad experience of life, am an adventurer and an intellectual, have extremely well-developed skills in logic, researching, and writing, can keep to tight deadlines, and have a keen sense of people.  I have kept an extensive journal during my travels (to 26 countries). I have a wide scope of knowledge and voracious reading habits; areas that I have significant familiarity with include law, history, geography, sciences, mathematics, languages, and the environment.  I am self-directed, fully capable of handling significant projects independently.
