    Hi, I'd like to share a story that might resonate with you. In a meeting with a client who was feeling quite down, he explained how his last project ended with no profit and no loss because the profit had gone into things that weren't accounted for in the takeoff. He even mentioned that he had given the estimator 5 stars and a tip because the takeoff "looked" comprehensive and well-detailed. Curious about this, I offered him a free consultation to recheck the takeoff they used to price out the project while bidding. Here's what I found that soaked up their profit: Incorrect Wall Stud Calculation: They calculated the vertical wall studs by simply dividing the wall linear feet by the stud spacing and didn't account for the extra studs required at wall corners and intersections. These were 16 GA, 28 ft long walls, and their takeoff was off by 357 studs. This also led to incorrect labor hours and lift rental time calculations. EFIS Mistake: They missed a lot of building returns that couldn't be seen directly in the elevation. By matching the floor plans with the elevation, we found that the EFIS takeoff was off by 5211 sq. ft. Specification Oversights: There were several other mistakes, like not checking the spec document for the required drywall thickness and type. Additionally, they didn't mention the flooring manufacturer in the subject line, leading the contractor to price it as standard flooring while the specified brand was much more expensive. A fancy Excel sheet doesn’t guarantee an accurate takeoff. We learned this by working with US-based companies in full-time roles. I have worked full-time with general contracting companies and later started helping other contractors as a freelancer. I created my profile in 2021, but I never submitted any proposals until August 2024, focusing instead on learning and perfecting my craft. I am a professional quantity surveyor specializing in preparing pre-bid and post-bid material takeoffs and cost estimates for residential and commercial projects across all CSI trades. However, I must admit I don't have much experience with highway contracts, so I would avoid bidding on those.
