As a pattern maker and technical designer, I offer many different services to help you launch your brand! While I no longer offer sewing as a service, I can help you go from an idea to being ready for a manufacturer (who would then make a sample and handle the production of your line.) The most apparent service I offer is pattern making. I can create the patterns to fit custom sizing or "standard" sizing based on a chart I have. I have helped many people develop sizing charts to fit either one specific person or a large population. J.J. Keller & Associates is the company I have spent the most time with developing their sizing chart and patterns for their developing clothing line. I also can grade patterns (existing or patterns I make). In addition, I can digitize any paper/physical patterns you may have. As a technical designer, I can create technical flats and tech packs for any garment. I also write sewing instructions for the everyday sewer, not just manufacturer use. It is my pleasure to help anyone new to the world of fashion navigate the process to get their ideas to the world! At 5 years old I started begging my Mom to teach me how to sew. She would give me her fabric scraps and I would make clothing for my Barbie doll. I made my first outfit for myself when I was in 4th grade from fabric left over from my Grandma's "stash". (I come from a long line of seamstresses going back as far as my Great-grandmother!) I have been a passionate seamstress now for over 50 years. After retiring I turned my passion for sewing into my own custom fashion design and construction business, Suanne Brooks Studio. I have experience in everything from t-shirts to tailored men's suits. Working with local designers over the past several years has given me to opportunity to take on some unusual projects which I find very rewarding. I would love to take on your apparel project and know I will be able to give you a beautiful, custom fit garment. I am eagerly looking forward to working with you, Suanne

I am a sustainable fashion designer and advocate working to maximize materials to their fullest potential to reduce textile waste. My expertise includes a thorough technical understanding of design, garment construction, patternmaking, and production. I have been sewing and making clothes for decades. I believe that everything has the potential, even the smallest scrap of fabric, and enjoy the journey of finding out how to make the design process more sustainable. You can find me most days in my sewing studio creating custom designs, upcycling, and playing with fabric scraps. Message me if I can help make your next project a success! More about me: Coming from a long line of artists and makers dating back generations, nostalgia, and craft are touchstones for my artwork and fashion design. My interest in Fashion comes from sewing and crafting at an early age, from watching my mother work surrounded by racks of clothes as a buyer at a large department store and witnessing the magic family members created with fabric, yarn, paint, and food. In 2018, I launched Asterisk And None, a series of Recipe-Towels based on old family recipes and vintage kitchen decor on Etsy. My formal connection to the Arts started with a Photography degree from San Francisco State University, continued with exhibiting my innovative photographs, and culminated with a long career as a Gallery Manager at a non-profit art organization. I see organizing exhibitions similar to garment production, where all the components must synchronize to become a reality. I love the process behind making things, and my curious nature always needs to know why and how things get made. I am passionate about being a part of the fashion industry where sustainability, fairness, respect for the environment, the supply chain, and the people who make the clothes are valued.

If you need help with the fleshing out your idea and all of the technical parts of your design project, I can help! I bring ideas to life by using a combination of 3D visualizations and physical prototypes to develop concepts. I create the technical sketches, tech packs, spec sheets, BOMs, and digitized patterns that are needed to get from concept to factory prototype and final production. I can also create 3D visualizations that can be used for marketing and e-commerce. Throughout my career as a freelance designer, I've recognized that most clients typically approach me already having a good idea about the design or product that they’re trying to bring to life. While providing creative direction and feedback is important, I’ve found that the most important thing that the client needs is a designer with a strong technical foundation to serve as the product engineer in bringing their ideas to life. I specialize in designing and developing niche products with user centered details. Are you working on a complex or unusual project? I can help with refining and fleshing out all of the aesthetic and technical details of your idea. If you have an innovative product that needs some work, please reach out to me. I'm also a sweater nerd who obsessively knits and crochets. I have a strong knowledge of sweater construction, finishes, stitches, and yarns, experience working with sweater and knitwear factories, 3D (whole garment) knitting machines and hand-knitting production. If you have a sweater or knitwear project in mind, please reach out to me! Experience and Skilled in Tech Packs, Patterns and 3D renderings for: Sweaters Hooded Sweatshirts (Hoodies) and T-shirts Casual Dresses Lounge sets and Casual wear Accessories (Woven and Leather handbags and eyewear) Furniture Stationery and Desktop Accessories Hard-goods (Glass, metal, plastic and wooden products)

How To Hire a Sewing Professional

A sewing professional can help bring your creative fashion visions to life. This guide will walk you through the process of hiring a skilled sewing professional, covering their responsibilities, qualifications, and the value they bring to various projects.

What is a sewing professional?

A sewing professional is a sewing expert who is typically skilled in altering, and repairing clothing and other textile items on a contract basis. They usually have expertise in garment construction, pattern making, and various sewing techniques, allowing them to work independently on diverse fashion and design projects.

Freelance sewing professionals often collaborate with fashion designers, costume designers, and individuals seeking custom-made or altered clothing. Their work may involve creating patterns, cutting fabric, assembling garments, and performing intricate hand-sewing or machine-sewing tasks to produce high-quality finished products.

Benefits of hiring a sewing professional

Hiring a sewing professional offers numerous benefits to fashion businesses, designers, and individuals:

  • Expertise. Sewing professionals bring specialized skills in garment construction, pattern drafting, and sewing techniques.
  • Flexibility. Freelancers can be hired for specific projects or on an as-needed basis, providing cost-effective solutions.
  • Custom work. They can create made-to-measure clothing and unique designs tailored to specific requirements.
  • Quality assurance. Professional sewing professionals ensure high-quality craftsmanship in clothing production.
  • Saving time. Their efficiency in sewing and alterations can significantly reduce project timelines.
  • Versatility. Sewing professionals can work on various projects, from dressmaking to costume design and textile alterations.
  • Additional skills. Many sewing professionals offer complementary services like pattern grading, fashion illustration, and basic graphic design for a more comprehensive approach to clothing design.

How do you hire a sewing freelancer?

You can source sewing freelancer talent on Upwork by following these three steps:

  1. Write a project description. You’ll want to determine your scope of work and the skills and requirements you are looking for in a sewing freelancer.
  2. Post it on Upwork. Once you’ve written a project description, post the job to Upwork. Simply follow the prompts to help you input the information you collected to scope out your project.
  3. Shortlist and interview a sewing freelancer. Once the proposals start coming in, create a shortlist of the professionals you want to interview.

Of these three steps, your project description is where you will determine your scope of work and the specific type of sewing freelancer you need to complete your project.

Freelance sewing professional hiring cost

Rates can vary due to many factors, including expertise and experience, location, and market conditions. Fashion designers (including sewing professionals) on Upwork cost $20–$50 per hour.

An experienced sewing freelancer may command higher fees but also work faster, have more specialized areas of expertise, and deliver higher-quality work. A contractor who is still building a client base may price their sewing freelancer services more competitively.

Full-time sewing professionals might offer package rates or discounted hourly rates for long-term projects.

Sewing professional-hiring FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about hiring sewing professionals:

What's the difference between a sewing professional and a tailor?

While both work with clothing alterations and construction, a sewing professional typically focuses on creating and altering women's clothing, while a tailor traditionally specializes in men's suits and formal wear. However, many modern professionals are skilled in both areas and may use the terms interchangeably.

Do I need to provide materials for the sewing professional?

This depends on your agreement with the sewing professional. Some freelancers prefer to source materials themselves to ensure quality, while others may work with materials you provide. Discuss this during the hiring process to clarify expectations.

How long does a typical sewing project take?

Project timelines can vary greatly depending on complexity, from a few hours for simple alterations to several weeks for custom garment creation. Discuss deadlines and expected turnaround times with your sewing professional before starting the project.

Can a sewing professional help with design ideas?

Many sewing professionals have experience in fashion design and can offer valuable input on design elements, fabric choices, and construction methods. However, if you need extensive design services, you may want to consider hiring a fashion designer in addition to a sewing professional.
