Before reading further, PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME INVITATIONS ASKING ME TO POST REVIEWS ON AMAZON. I AM ON A PERMANENT BAN BECAUSE OF CLIENTS ASKING FOR THOSE. I can only test products for feedback directly on Upwork or in surveys. Also, for app testing, I live in Nevada and therefore certain apps can’t be tested here, such as sports betting, online casino, etc. I am also not willing to travel. And, I AM NOT A PARENT OR HAVE PETS. (For those who have products for children, parents or pets.) Additionally, I am unwilling to do jobs that require me to record my voice. I have been told that I constantly drop my voice at the end of sentences, and it is evidenced by people constantly asking me to repeat what I said or that they didn’t catch the end of what I said. Motivated professional looking to expand her horizons in various fields of interest. Have experience in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, as well as Google Docs and Sheets. Offline, I currently work in customer service in the retail industry. Online, I have done freelance work in data entry, ghostwriting, editing and proofreading, typing, and research. I have a degree in Business Administration with Computer Science concentration. I type 79 wpm. I have proofread and edited one self help book, several romances, two children's books, and two Minecraft gameplay books. I have also been asked to go through a beta web site, which included a product catalog, and note down any errors in spelling, grammar, etc. Please note that I have never actually PLAYED Minecraft and therefore cannot write Minecraft books from scratch. I have also beta read fiction novels and given feedback through surveys and directly through Upwork chat. I am able to write my thoughts and feedback in Word as well, but not as a post on Amazon. I do not use AI. I have also been ghostwriting books but generally need an idea for the story from the client. However, I have done a number of romance novels, including some involving the paranormal and contemporary romance. Additionally, I have beta tested a beach resort simulation game that was in its planning stages to be available on Facebook. I played the game for several days, about an hour per day, and gave my opinion on how I felt about the game and its elements in a group discussion. I also was asked for ideas on how to improve upon it. I also have also tested and evaluated apps for iPhone. What does a video game reviewer do?

A video game reviewer plays through titles to assess their mechanics, narrative, and visual presentation before publishing a detailed critique. This role requires more than casual play, as the reviewer must analyze why specific design choices succeed or fail during actual gameplay. The final output serves as a guide for potential players by combining personal experience with objective evaluation of the software.

  • Play through relevant portions of the game to evaluate how core mechanics function in practice and determine if they feel satisfying. Take notes on controls, pacing, and difficulty curves to identify underlying reasons why the gameplay loop engages or frustrates the user. This hands-on assessment forms the foundation of the review by grounding opinions in direct interaction with the software rather than surface-level observations.
  • Analyze the story, thematic elements, and aesthetic choices to discuss how effectively the game communicates its intended message. Critique graphics, art style, and sound design relative to the project goals to see if the presentation supports the overall experience. Write clear and honest arguments that explain how these creative decisions impact player immersion and emotional response throughout the session.
  • Draft and publish well-argued critiques that include a review score as a reference point alongside detailed textual explanations. Produce initial impressions or “in progress” reviews when full access is not yet available, then finalize the piece once all content is accessible. Update published articles when patches or new versions change the game meaningfully to ensure the advice remains accurate and useful for readers over time.

How to hire a video game reviewer on Upwork

Step 1: Post a job

Define the specific games and review angles you need covered. Use Job Post Generator powered by Uma™, Upwork's Mindful AI to draft your listing. Describe your needs in a few sentences and Uma drafts a job post for the role. You can write a new post, update a saved draft, or reuse an existing post.

  • Specify whether the reviewer must play through the entire campaign or focus on early access mechanics and initial impressions.
  • List the platforms required for testing, such as PC, console, or mobile, to ensure the freelancer has the necessary hardware.
  • Clarify if the deliverable includes a numerical score or strictly written critique of gameplay, story, and aesthetics.

Step 2: Evaluate candidates

Look for published samples that demonstrate clear critical thinking and structured analysis. Uma can run instant video interviews and build shortlists with side-by-side comparisons to help you assess fit.

  • Check for reviews that explain why specific mechanics feel satisfying or frustrating rather than just describing what happens in the game.
  • Verify experience with updated or revisited reviews that account for patches and content changes over time.
  • Assess writing style for honesty and thoroughness, ensuring the critic supports opinions with concrete examples from play sessions.

Step 3: Interview your top choices

Discuss their approach to analyzing story themes and visual presentation relative to the game’s goals. Interviews can be scheduled and conducted within Upwork Messages with an immediate transcript and summary after each one.

  • Ask how they take notes during play to capture underlying reasons for their assessment of game flow and balance.
  • Request examples of how they handle reviewing incomplete games or online-only titles with evolving content.
  • Determine their process for drafting well-argued critiques that separate personal preference from objective design evaluation.

Step 4: Agree on scope and begin work

Set clear milestones for playtime, note-taking, and final draft submission. Use Upwork Messages and the contract workroom for communication and project management, plus identity verification, payment protection, hourly tracking, and project funds for security.

  • Define the exact format for the final deliverable, such as a standard review, an in-progress impression piece, or an updated critique.
  • Establish a schedule for reaching specific game milestones to ensure the reviewer experiences key narrative or mechanical beats.
  • Agree on the depth of aesthetic critique required, focusing on graphics and style relative to the developer’s stated intentions.

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring a video game reviewer worth it?

For most businesses, yes: hiring a video game reviewer is worthwhile. These specialists play through titles to assess mechanics and narrative flow, then write clear critiques that help players decide what to buy. They also publish updated reviews when patches change the experience, which keeps your content accurate and relevant.

How do I evaluate video game reviewer candidates?

Look for writers who explain why specific mechanics feel satisfying or frustrating rather than just stating they are good or bad. Ask candidates to submit a sample critique that analyzes gameplay, story themes, and aesthetics to see if they support their opinions with concrete examples from their play sessions.

What should a video game reviewer include in their work?

A complete review covers gameplay mechanics, story themes, and visual presentation relative to the game’s goals. The writer should also assign a score if your publication uses one and explain the reasoning behind that rating in the text.

Can a video game reviewer update an article after launch?

Yes, reviewers often publish initial impressions when full access is limited and finalize the piece later. They revisit the title to write updated reviews when significant patches or new content change the core experience.
