Tips for Crafting an Editor Job Description

What is an editor?
An editor is a professional responsible for polishing copy to produce high-quality written documents for publication on websites, blogs, white papers, reports, presentations, marketing brochures, and more. Editors must have a strong grasp of the English language (or other applicable languages), including proper grammar, word usage, spelling and punctuation, along with adhering to any applicable style guidelines for their clients. More experienced editors can edit for readability, tone and voice, organizational structure, holes in information, factual errors, and unnecessary words. A good editor can help make writers better through feedback and coaching and may instill confidence in the quality of content your audience is reading. General and niche publications hire editors to clean copy and work with writers to develop and produce quality copy. Wherever the written word is created, editors read it before it’s presented for consumption.

The job overview
Our investment business needs an independent contract editing professional to polish content for blogs, brochures, training materials, internal and external communications, and other written content. We seek a dedicated editor with proven experience in publishing to read copy written by other independent contractors and internal subject matter experts. Under the oversight of our marketing director, you will also be responsible for posting blogs to our website using WordPress and publishing social media posts from our executives to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The contract length is for nine months, and the work should require an average of 15-20 hours per week, with room for adjustment, depending on the projects in motion. Knowledge of the real estate industry is a plus but not required.

Fiction or non-fiction doesn’t matter. What does matter is the voice the author uses to draw a reader in and keep them engaged. Well defined characters and a plot that continues to surprise are essential when crafting fiction. Non-fiction essentials include keeping obscure words and erudite attitudes in check. A writer, fictional or non-fictional, should never talk over or down to the reader. Repetitious phrases, over-used jargon, spelling errors and poor punctuation can take an engaged reader and literally shove them out of the story or document breaking the connection. Poor word choices will cause a reader to question whether the author truly understands the topic. Good editing and copy-writing are essential. I never wanted to be a “business” person. I really had no plans to sell anything... ever. It turned out that I was really good at business and sales. I was even better at creating innovative strategies to grow business.
