Focus - Producing Literature Reviews for Engineering and Science.

INTRODUCTION I specialize in conducting comprehensive literature reviews for the following areas; 1) engineering (including patents), 2) science, 3) economics, and 4) finance and business. In this regard, I have a long record of producing high quality published reviews that establish the body of knowledge for a topic. I pay particular attention to the associations between various sources while identifying the gaps worth exploring. Please check the examples listed in my profile. BACKGROUND The bedrock of any research is a command of pre-existing facts and insights. The purpose of the literature review is to identify and to organize these facts in a systematic way for written and verbal transmission. This serves as an essential foundation to build future knowledge. In general, fragmentation and dispersion embody all information found in society. The process of integration serves a great need to bring together information thus gaining an overarching viewpoint. Using proprietary techniques and decades of experience, my goal is to produce the best literature review possible. I work as an authority in multiple disciplines. In many cases, conducting a literature review is time consuming and complex. My approach outsources this effort and through various productivity tools I can produce economies of scale thus reducing time and cost. AREAS OF LITERATURE REVIEW -- Papers for academic journals. -- Presentations. -- Technology startup proposals. -- Grant submissions. -- Strategic plans. -- Marketing science proposals for business plans. -- Private labs. -- Thesis review. -- Technical translation of literature into common language. PROCESS I use the following approach when doing a literature search for an engineering problem: 1. Search for papers that are a direct fit to get an idea of the bigger picture (induction). 2. Search for papers that have an indirect link but that the mathematics or technology can undergo transformation to fit the problem I am researching (translation). 3. Look in the basic science area for papers that form a theory explaining a phenomena related to the problem of interest (deduction). RESOURCES I have full access to state-of-the-art databases that contain academic journals along with electronic access to a wide range of books and periodicals. For organization I use open source software and various apps from the Apple ecosystem. Finally, I have the means to organize literature into a semantic model, which improves analysis. The intent is to produce reviews that can update with new sources. This is of particular interest to publishers of academic journals. RECENT PROJECTS Several current projects through Upwork include thesis editing and guidance and machine learning and artificial intelligence. BIOGRAPHY Edmund W. Schuster (see: schuster.us.com) has held several different research and administrative appointments since 2000 at MIT. These include appointments within the departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and five labs including Langer Lab, David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He is currently working on several independent projects in materials science (including biomaterials) and the M Language, a means of connecting mathematical models to data using the Internet. Previously, Edmund worked in corporate management at Welch's, Inc. (Concord, MA), an agricultural cooperative and leading producer of Concord grape and other fruit products. He has been actively involved in research and has published over 130 articles and papers. Colleagues have cited these works over 1,155 times. He has authored a popular book published by Springer titled Global RFID: The Value of the EPCglobal Network for Supply Chain Management. Edmund is associated with several start-up firms in Cambridge and San Francisco including ReadyTouch, Inc., a player in cloud services and POS systems areas with a concentration on innovations in food service. He is the publisher of Fabric for Dispersed Knowledge, a blog with daily updates established in Fall 2006. The blog contains over 8,600 posts mostly on engineering, science, business, economics, and finance. His strengths as ranked by peers are; 1) management, 2) data analysis, 3) strategy, 4) optimization, 5) analysis, 6) process engineering, 7) logistics, and 8) supply chain management. Edmund has the following professional experiences: writing and publishing, general management, mathematical modeling, operations research / management science, food processing, consumer goods, precision agriculture, agricultural inputs, agricultural equipment, information technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, supply chain management, publishing, startups, management consulting, and several academic appointments. Besides his MIT work, Edmund is Industrialist at Edm. Wm 8, LLC dba DATA SPAWN (TM), a firm that focuses on research, technology, and publishing.

"Edmund was to proofread a paper written by a non-native speaker for a scientific journal. He delayed the deadline for more than a month. He did not follow to the rules of the journal specified in the job description, arguing that we “have to make it clear that we want to follow the format for the text and we need to send the exact link”. A number of his corrections only led to a distortion of the meaning. The edits contained typos and errors, obvious even to us, who do not speak the language as a native. As a result, we were forced to exclude a number of his edits and close the contact, since we cannot wait longer due to the deadline in the submission of the article."

"The client changed the job description in a surreptitious way AFTER I submitted the bid. The new job description substantially widened the scope of the project, unknown to me, and the old job description appeared as a “related job.” The original called for “proof reading” but the job was in reality a re-write to meet journal format and for comprehension, far more freelancer effort. I worked from the job description that I bid and was so surprised to see the added scope weeks later. The 15,000 word manuscript was in bad shape from the beginning and I essentially rewrote under great stress as a way to help the client via devoting 35 hours of work. A part of the manuscript was in Cyrillic and in some cases responses were in Cyrillic as well. This was not at all a proof reading job as what appeared in the original job description. This type of deception should not be part of Upwork. Based on the fixed contract I got $2 per hour or less for my extensive effort. The client was essentially asking for free work from the beginning. In addition, the client held on to my edits for 18 DAYS before responding even though I did regular follow up. Much of the original manuscript was non comprehensible but the client refused to clarify any aspect of their intended meaning. There was no iteration. This leads me to believe the client did not have a consensus on what they intended to write and somehow I was to make sense of their disagreements. From the client’s later comments, this was a government funded project and they got into trouble meeting the deadline, expecting me to save the day at $2 per hour or less. A significant section included new data as an extension to existing data with no mention of the origin or the methodology. This is a step short of fabrication. All of these aspects are far below global academic research standards and certainly not in keeping with American research practice at university level. As an Upwork client, and in the strongest words, I can not recommend this client."

"Edmund did an excellent editing and formatting of my writing for an academic journal. He was able to take a rather lengthy writing and, without losing meaning, condense it to the guidelines, all while maintaining flow and enhancing readability. He communicated regularly with me, and he finished the job under the deadline. I highly recommend him!"
