Encouraging and Professional Editing

A Range of Services at Competitive Prices My name is Katie Yee, and I’m a professional freelance book editor. I'm glad you've found your way to my little corner of the editing world. You will find me encouraging, easy to work with, reliable, and trustworthy. I have worked with authors from many backgrounds on a variety of projects, but I especially love the opportunity to work with Christian authors on faith-based projects. My first step is getting to know an author and their unique inspiration for writing. Then I join with them to make their writing clear and compelling. My projects have varied in size from 300 to 170,000 words. Whether I’m working with experienced, best-selling authors or first-time authors, I love helping people get their manuscript just right before sending it out into the world. I am a proud member of the Editorial Freelancers Association and The Christian PEN: Proofreaders and Editors Network. I provide a full range of professional editing services and can help you determine the next step for your manuscript. Honoring your vision and unique voice is always my priority. I am flexible and can adapt my editing to your specific needs and budget. Are you: • a novelist looking to make sure your plot is sound and your characters are fully developed? • a first-time writer unsure about the next step for your manuscript? • writing an opinion piece for your local newspaper? • a blogger? • finally starting that memoir your kids have always urged you to write? • finding that your website verbiage needs a once-over? • working on a book or e-book with a message you know will impact others? I would love to work with you! Katie Yee Blue Jay Editing Services Editing rates are an estimate and will be finalized after a brief complimentary review of your manuscript: - Developmental Editing Service (analyzing the overall organization, strength, and effectiveness; examining the "bones" of the book): $.02-.035 per word - Line Editing / Heavy Copyediting Service (focusing at the paragraph and sentence level on clarity and flow): $.03-.045 per word - Proofreading / Light Copyediting Service (combing through a highly developed text correcting errors of grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.): $.015-.025 per word - Mini Developmental Editing Service (reading a manuscript and writing a letter with general observations and suggestions for how to proceed): $.009 per word - Mini Copyediting Service (a combination of line and proofread for projects less than 2,500 words): $.11 per word

This sample will give you an idea of what is involved in a developmental edit; it is taken with permission from part of a blog I edited. Before I do a developmental edit I spend time getting to know the author's vision and purpose in writing. I also like to get to know their personality a bit so that I can sense their voice as a writer. Then as I read, I focus on the future reader: What is clear? What is confusing? What is powerful? What is distracting? Then I make comments and suggestions to strengthen the material. Sometimes I suggest material to remove, add, or expand. Sometimes I suggest how to reorganize the material. Sometimes I work with the text a bit, but I always use Track Changes so everything is waiting for your approval. I work very little with the language or grammar. That comes in subsequent revisions. With a developmental edit we're focused on the big picture, the bones, of the material. How can we make your message clear and strong?
Developmental Edit Sample
This is a sample of a line edit I did on a blog. In a line edit, I work through the manuscript carefully making sure each paragraph is cohesive, each sentence strong, each word precise. Some authors prefer a lighter touch with in-text revisions and ask for more side-bar comments and suggestions. This author preferred me to work directly with the text and has encouraged me to freely revise. Most authors prefer this style, but I am comfortable and experienced with both styles of line editing. I always use Track Changes, so every suggested revision is waiting for the author's approval. A line edit is not a substitute for a proofread. While I correct glaring grammatical or spelling errors, my focus is on language and style.
