Responsibilities

A mechanical engineer with our company will have multiple responsibilities:

4 steps to creating a mechanical engineering job description that fits your needs

Now it’s time to write your own mechanical engineer job description. It’s important that you determine what you’re looking for in a candidate so that you can include that information in the description. These four tips will guide you through that process.

1. Determine what type of mechanical engineer you need

The field of mechanical engineering has multiple disciplines:

Aerospace
Acoustics
Automotive

Computer-aided design (CAD)
Heating and cooling

Mechanical engineers often develop specialties within one of these areas, so it’s important to find a mechanical engineer who is skilled within your area of focus.

2. Employee vs. independent contractor vs. agency

You can hire a mechanical engineer in-house, contract with one through an agency, or work with an engineer who is operating as an independent contractor. An agency or engineering firm may contract with multiple mechanical engineers, which can be ideal if you have multiple products or specialties with which you need help. Hiring an engineer in-house is ideal if you have the workload for another full-time employee. Working with an independent contractor is often the most flexible arrangement, and it can be a solution for both your short-term and your ongoing project needs.

Your project scope and budget will help determine the amount of experience your job requires.

4. Industry

Mechanical engineers work within many different industries, and each industry has different challenges and procedures associated with it. For example, a mechanical engineer who works in the aerospace industry may be well-versed in jet population engines but unfamiliar with the work that an engineer in the heating and cooling industry does.
