We are looking for an experienced SQL Server consultant to design and implement a customer-controlled database backup and reporting environment. Our primary software vendor can provide recurring Microsoft SQL Server database backups. We need someone to architect, implement, and document a secure solution that receives those backups, restores them automatically, and maintains a read-only reporting database. The primary goal is business continuity and disaster recovery. A secondary goal is to create a reporting environment that can support Power BI, internal dashboards, AI, and future analytics without impacting production systems. Responsibilities Review our existing environment and vendor capabilities. Recommend the overall architecture and implementation approach. Design a secure SQL Server environment (Azure preferred, but open to recommendations). Configure SQL Server and restore database backups. Automate recurring database restores. Configure backup retention and disaster recovery procedures. Implement appropriate security and access controls. Document the entire solution for future maintenance. Coordinate technical discussions with our software vendor as needed. Explain technical concepts in clear, non-technical language. This role requires someone who can work independently, understand business objectives, communicate effectively, and transform raw data into clear, actionable business insights. ## Key Responsibilities * Connect Power BI to various data sources, including Excel, CSV files, SQL databases, APIs, and other business systems. * Clean, transform, and prepare datasets using Power Query. * Build interactive, visually appealing Power BI dashboards and reports. * Develop reliable data models with appropriate relationships between datasets. * Create calculated columns, measures, KPIs, and other business calculations using DAX. * Implement slicers, filters, drill-downs, drill-throughs, and other interactive reporting features. * Apply effective data visualization and dashboard design principles. * Optimize data models, queries, and reports to improve speed and overall performance. * Identify and resolve inefficient queries, slow-loading visuals, and other performance issues. * Ensure dashboards communicate complex business information in a simple and user-friendly format. * Implement appropriate security measures and access controls where necessary. * Perform thorough testing to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and reliability. * Provide documentation and basic guidance for dashboard maintenance and usage. * Communicate project updates, challenges, recommendations, and progress throughout the engagement. ## Required Qualifications * Proven hands-on experience developing dashboards and reports using Microsoft Power BI. * Strong knowledge of Power Query and data transformation techniques. * Advanced proficiency with DAX and Power BI calculations. * Solid understanding of data modeling, relationships, and BI concepts. * Experience working with Excel, CSV, SQL databases, APIs, or comparable data sources. * Strong knowledge of data visualization and dashboard design best practices. * Experience diagnosing and improving Power BI report performance. * Ability to independently interpret business requirements and translate them into effective reporting solutions. * Excellent attention to detail with a strong focus on data accuracy. * Strong written and verbal communication skills. * Ability to manage deadlines and deliver high-quality, production-ready work. ## Preferred Qualifications * Previous experience working with small businesses, startups, or growing organizations. * Strong SQL and relational database knowledge. * Experience combining multiple data sources into a centralized reporting environment. * Familiarity with Power BI Service, scheduled data refreshes, workspaces, and deployment. * Experience implementing Row-Level Security (RLS). * Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft data and BI technologies. * Experience creating KPI dashboards for sales, finance, operations, marketing, customer analytics, or similar business functions. ## What We’re Looking For We are looking for a developer who combines **strong technical Power BI skills with practical business intelligence knowledge**.
