I spent over five years working in the publishing industry, with experience in both editorial and publicity. I want to help authors who are serious about getting their work published. I also have an MFA in Creative Writing, and have sold work to a major Hollywood studio. I will work with you to identify your strengths and weaknesses as a storyteller and improve your manuscript.
What you can expect from me as an EDITOR:
- Big picture view on what works and what could use improvement, focusing on overall pacing and plot
- Close look at your characters, noting anything that is confusing or might be lacking
World-building questions designed to help you think deeper about the world you've created--in my experience, this can help writers improve character and story as well
- Suggestions for approaching any revisions that might be needed--this can be overwhelming, so I'll help you break down how to tackle your next round of editing and revision
What you can expect from me as a PROOFREADER:
- Careful attention to detail, ensuring your manuscript is as clean as possible
- Respect for your voice and your style while still adhering to the rules of grammar and syntax
What you can expect from me as a QUERY LETTER REVIEWER:
- Real-world experience reading hundreds of query letters and knowing what will get an agent to hit "delete" and what will make them request more
- Help you identify how best to position your manuscript in the market and find the best comps
Genres I work most frequently in: fantasy, romantasy, paranormal, sci-fi, mystery, and women's commercial fiction

As a proofreader, copy editor, and line editor, I can help you achieve a higher level of professionalism in your writing. I’ll go through your work with a fine-tooth comb to make sure that what you have written reflects your voice in the most coherent and correct way possible. I have 5 years of experience in proofreading, copyediting, and line editing for a range of material, from professional business copy to fiction. Deliverables for any of these services would include an edited copy of your work in the form of a Word document. I can also provide a personalized style sheet upon request.
As a developmental editor, my goal is to look at the big picture aspects of a story, such as the plot, characterizations, perspective, and world building, to help authors bring their stories to life in the best way they can. My job isn’t to “fix mistakes” but to simply ask questions and give advice on how to strengthen a narrative. I have experience working with fantasy, romance, mystery, and sci-fi fiction. Deliverables for developmental editing include a copy of your manuscript with comments and a revision letter detailing my findings.
My education consists of an English degree with honors from Toccoa Falls College with continued education in proofreading, copyediting, line editing, and developmental editing from Knowadays, Edit Republic, and ClubEdFreelance. I value hard work, dedication, and transparency. I want to help you achieve your dream of becoming a published author.
If you're interested in any of my services, send me a message detailing your word count, project type, budget, and the services you're interested in.
And if you actually read all of this, tell me your favorite color in your message!

Hi, I’m Fred Aceves. I'm an author and passionate book editor and coach.
As a published author with HarperCollins, my work has been honored with multiple accolades.
I know firsthand how deeply personal and challenging the writing process can be. That’s why I bring the same care and dedication to my clients’ work as I do to my own. Whether you're just starting out or preparing your manuscript for submission or publication, I’m here to help you bring your vision to life.
While I don't use AI in my own editing work, I stay current on AI developments and understand its ethical use, helping writers navigate tools that support research or logistics without compromising their personal voice and expression.
Below, you’ll find the services I offer. Not sure which one fits your needs? Just send me a message with a bit about your project and where you are in the process. I’ll point you in the right direction—even if that means recommending someone else.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Also known as substantive or content editing, this is where we shape the big picture of your book.
For novelists: I focus on the essential storytelling elements—plot, structure, character development, pacing, setting, conflict, tone, and theme. Early drafts often need reworking or reshuffling, and I’ll help you strengthen what’s working while identifying what can be cut or improved.
For nonfiction authors: I can help you build a clear, compelling structure, fine-tune your argument, and enhance your book’s flow. I’ll also help with chapter titles, subheadings, and ways to present information (or data) more clearly and visually.
LINE EDITING & COPY EDITING
Many editors specialize in one or the other—I offer both. That means more cohesive, efficient editing—and better value for you.
Line Editing: I’ll help you polish your prose on a sentence level, improving clarity, flow, rhythm, and tone. This is about making your writing sing.
Copy Editing: I’ll also address grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency, and accuracy.
BOOK COACHING
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just unsure where to begin, book coaching might be exactly what you need.
Does any of the following resonate?
I want to write a book, but I don’t know how to start.
I’ve started—but I can’t seem to finish.
The plot or structure feels like a mess.
I’m creatively stuck.
I’ve got pages of notes, but no clear path forward.
I wonder if I have what it takes or if anyone will even want to read it.
You’re not alone—and you don’t have to do it alone. As your coach, I’ll help you:
• Build a clear roadmap for your book
• Set (and meet!) consistent writing goals
• Get regular, personalized feedback
• Brainstorm and troubleshoot ideas
• Stay motivated and confident
• Move from idea to finished manuscript
Ready to take the next step? Get in touch, and let’s talk about how we can work together.
The following is just some of my clients' feedback that you can find in my Upwork history:
"Fred is a very accomplished, high-level editor with deep experience in editing nonfiction. I worked with Fred early in the conception state of writing my book and he eventually helped lead me towards a breakthrough that set me on the right path to finishing the book to great reviews."
- Chris Shaver, author of Relationship Needs: Ten Shortcuts
"Wonderful feedback and guidance helping me work through the content doubts I had. Always reliable, always offering valuable insights on how to progress. I highly recommend him."

- Dan Pardi, MS, PhD, CEO of Vivendi Health and author of the forthcoming What is Health?
"Fred is thorough, patient, and committed to a level of quality that pushes you to rise to meet it. He's an editor who respects both your intention as a writer and the intelligence of your reader. Highly recommended."

Hello, potential clients!
Through the Collegiate Program at my high school, I was able to graduate from Eastern Florida State College before graduating from high school. I was first introduced to creative writing at this college, and I fell in love with it. It inspired me to pursue a degree in English (with a focus on creative writing) at UCF. I particularly enjoyed the fiction-writing and script-writing workshops. In these workshops, I was able to edit other students’ short stories and scripts (usually ten pages long). I checked for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I also looked for consistency in character dialogue, formatting (for the scripts), and tone in a piece.
My main goal is to help your piece of writing become the best that it can be. My love for reading and attention to detail will be of service to you. Whether it is a short story or a full-length novel, I am here to help make it stronger :).
GHOSTWRITING:
Need help drafting a novel or screenplay?
With your outline, I can turn your notes into a cohesive draft!
Note: I do not work with erotica or graphic content.
PROJECT STRUCTURE:
I do fixed-price contracts only. Message me with the details of your project, and I'll send you a breakdown of milestones.
I require an upfront payment once we start the contract: 25%, 30%, or 50% depending on the project.
All editing projects have a starting cost of $350. I'm open to negotiate with existing clients :).
My ghostwriting rate differs depending on genre, outline length, and deadline flexibility. Contact me for a quote :).
I communicate by Upwork messages only (no video or phone calls). I'm reliable and very prompt; you won't have to wait long for an answer :).
I can't wait to work with you!

Welcome! I appreciate you stopping by to learn a little about who I am and what I can do for you. Editing is my calling, and I have invested myself into providing you with the best value so that everyone wins in the end. I understand that writing and publishing is a long process, so I'm here to make it a little easier. My goal is to set you on your way with content that you are proud to publish.
Writing is a messy process, so my job as your copyeditor/proofreader is to help you clean that mess up and present your message to the world with confidence. If that book you’re writing is the culmination of years of work, you’re going to want to make sure it says exactly what you want it to say—no chances for miscommunication or embarrassing typos. If you write a company newsletter, let’s work together to be sure that your drive and vision for your company comes through clearly in the columns you and other contributors write.
I’m not picky about the medium you use for your content—book, short ebook feature, newsletter, blog series, and anything else between—I work with whatever you bring me. I AM picky about my work, though, so you can be sure that I will give you my best. My highest goal is your greatest success.
In addition to what I mentioned already, I've also worked with fiction, nonfiction, and medical texts, and have experience with Chicago, MLA, APA, AP, and Turabian styles (and any combination or modifications in between). I completed my Masters of Science degree in Publishing from Pace University in 2016 and have 10 years of copyediting experience.
