My firmware approach is to write everything in C/C++. My components embrace the Active Object Pattern. I have found that this development technique is best for simple, extensible, and testable firmware. It takes extra time to development in this methodical style up front, but the great advantage is that you can still move at a predictable development rate when the project becomes larger and more complex. And we all know, that successful products invariably move to larger and more complex development requirements over time.
I have a fondness for dual core processing and the non-blocking of tasks (threads). Additional steps are required in freeRTOS to correctly manage non-blocking dual core activity. I believe I understand those requirements. Every firmware project that I write is dual compliant even it is only runs on a single core processor. I believe that multicore processing will become more common in the future and projects should be made ready for this opportunity from the start.
I am using Claude Code on all my new projects, but to be clear, AI hasn't completely taken over all design work just yet. This is progressive process where there will always be some judicious mix of machine and human interaction. Computers are really strong in seeing common mistakes and humans are very strong in seeing philosophical design strategies. I believe the best projects are going to emerge from a mix effort approach. And hopefully, these superior results will happen at a faster pace.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I strongly believe that AI will not give you what you do not understand. I believe the tools look at your level of questioning and return just the level of increase that you are willing to pay for. How would I come to this conclusion? Because it talks to me in very high levels which I know the beginner would not follow. So, I suspect that only experts will get expert help or slightly beyond expert help. It is human nature to dismiss that which you do not understand. This is why I think that AI will mainly serve a supporting role. If you are firm entrenched in a low quality approach, I believe it is going to support you in that low quality approach - rather than risk losing you as a customer.
As a native born American and educated in an US based ABET accredited engineering university, you might expect that I have an extremely deep understanding of the nuances in the English language. This skill is critical in writing good contextual guidance for LLMs (Large Language Models).
