I am Saul Hidalgo, a Computer Engineer, Senior Java Developer, and Founder of Saul Technologies, with more than 14 years of professional experience developing, maintaining, converting, and modernizing software. I have contributed to systems used in national security and defense in the United Kingdom, document management, financial modeling, oil and industrial companies, retail businesses, scientific applications, and universities such as Harvard Business Publishing. My main specialization is Java, but much of my work involves understanding complex existing systems, preserving their business logic, improving their architecture, migrating old technologies, and integrating software with databases, documents, hardware, and external services. My experience includes: • Java 8, 11, 17, and 21 • Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA, Maven, Tomcat • JavaFX, Swing, and Eclipse RCP • REST APIs and system integrations • PostgreSQL, MariaDB, MySQL, and SQLite • Docker, Linux, Git, GitHub, Jira, and Slack • OpenKM customization and maintenance • Legacy software modernization • Code and algorithm conversion • POS, inventory, invoicing, and retail systems One of my longest-running projects was Debrief, a maritime-analysis platform used in defense and national-security environments in the United Kingdom. I worked as a core developer for approximately six years and made more than 1,250 contributions. My work included major features, maintenance, performance improvements, database integrations, user-interface components, media export, scripting integrations, and development related to Debrief NG and Debrief Lite. I also have extensive experience with OpenKM Document Management System. I have developed workflows, automations, scheduled tasks, reports, metadata functionality, REST and Java API integrations, authentication integrations, retention processes, backups, upgrades, and custom extensions. Another important area of my experience is legacy modernization and code conversion. Previous projects include: • Converting a complex financial Excel model into pure Java for Forio and Harvard Business Publishing • Translating more than 11,000 lines of Matlab code into C# for scientific simulations • Converting hundreds of Excel VBA macros into Go • Migrating Java applications to newer Java and library versions • Porting algorithms between Java, Go, Python, C, C++, C#, Delphi, VBA, and Matlab I do not treat code conversion as a simple line-by-line translation. I first understand the algorithms, data flow, dependencies, expected results, and edge cases, and then reproduce the same behavior in the target technology. For desktop applications, I have developed custom JavaFX, Swing, and Eclipse RCP systems with specific user-interface requirements, MVC architecture, bindings, reusable components, installers, database integrations, reports, file processing, and specialized calculation tools. I also have solid experience with POS and retail software. One of the systems I developed was deployed across 44 retail branches and included inventory management, invoicing, credit notes, fiscal and thermal printers, Zebra label printers, barcode readers, customer displays, user permissions, reports, and branch deployment. I have a strong background in algorithms, data structures, dynamic programming, graph algorithms, string processing, and performance optimization. I previously taught Algorithms Laboratories at Universidad Simón Bolívar using Java and Python. Before proposing a solution, I try to understand the real business requirement, current architecture, behavior that must be preserved, technical risks, and expected integrations. For well-defined projects, I can provide a fixed-price proposal and delivery plan. For maintenance, modernization, debugging, or work involving an existing codebase, I prefer to review the project first and provide a realistic estimate. You can review my public contributions on GitHub: saulhidalgoaular Please, do not hesitate to contact me and tell me about your project. Kind regards, Saul Hidalgo

Hi, I am a scientist developer, with problem solving being my biggest skill. I code mathematical models to understand Nature's important questions but I am also interested in what algorithms, statistics and programming can achieve in the real world, not only at the blackboards. I am highly experienced in developing and designing mathematical models, optimization procedures and statistical data analysis.

I help researchers and engineers turn complex material concepts into simulation-ready models — saving weeks of setup, debugging, and validation work. I provide: 1) Realistic polycrystals with grain boundaries, precipitates, and tailored microstructures 2) Custom grain boundaries with specified misorientation, absorbed dislocations, and interface engineering 3) Physically accurate defects such as dislocations and twins embedded directly into grains Unlike generic structure builders, my models are energetically minimized and validated, making them immediately usable in simulations. No extra setup or debugging required. Whether for publications, advanced materials R&D, or industrial testing, I deliver high-quality, customized atomic structures ready for visualization in OVITO or direct simulation in LAMMPS. ---

Lead C/C++ engineer, 18+ years, specialising in algorithm-heavy systems: computational geometry, 3D graphics, desktop applications and performance-critical code. Work I've built has shipped into simulation software adopted by Apple and Airbus, AAA game engines at Ubisoft, BMW and Panasonic vehicle systems, and a CME-certified trading platform. WHAT I DO BEST - Hard algorithmic problems - computational geometry, spatial optimisation, 2D/3D linear algebra, multithreading - C/C++ systems and desktop applications - Qt, STL, Win32 API, Linux/POSIX, CMake - Legacy debugging others have given up on - undocumented code, original authors long gone, intermittent faults - Technical project management - Agile/Scrum, JIRA administration, roadmaps, hiring, team leadership SELECTED RESULTS - Built "Human Exposure Analysis" solo in 3 months: skeleton-driven positioning of voxel human body models, a capability no competing EM simulation vendor offered at the time. The deciding functionality behind Apple adopting the software. - Co-developed a shortest-path solver across 3D surfaces with obstacles (Dijkstra, custom raster optimisations, multithreading), built for Airbus to compute minimum cable runs between aircraft antennas. - Automated optimal packing of mixed-diameter cable bundles to minimise cross-section, replacing a manual process in automotive wiring. - Led the C/C++ team on broadcast IP video at Imagine Communications: EpicMV multiview monitoring and the Selenio Network Processor. - Built a DropCopy client for a high-frequency trading platform and took it through CME AutoCert+ certification. - Cloth simulation for Ubisoft's in-house game engine across PC, PS4 and Xbox One. - Automated ceiling pattern layout for Autodesk Revit in C# .NET, respecting obstacles, bounds and varying pattern structures. HOW I WORK I own the whole problem: requirements, architecture, implementation, testing and delivery. I tell you up front what I cover and where you would need another specialist, so you get a realistic plan rather than an optimistic one. I also take web projects end to end. Most recently a bilingual production site from idea to launch in 3 weeks, solo: domain, Cloudflare infrastructure, build and release. Send me the problem rather than the spec. Deciding what to build is usually the hard part. CAPACITY I also run a small agency on Upwork (Smart Fox), so I can bring in an additional engineer when a project needs more than one pair of hands, or deliver through the agency if that suits your procurement better.
