Copy Editor, Proofreader and Writer (AP style)

I will work with you to tighten, clarify and strengthen your content while preserving your voice. I will also write original, on-brand content that will engage your readers. I've been writing and editing professionally for 15 years, and I have a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in creative writing. This has equipped me with journalistic discipline and ethics combined with fluency in creative writing techniques. What I've been writing and editing recently: • Marketing copy, including long-form assets, blog posts, and case studies. I know how to engage the reader, answer "why," and call to action. • Scripts for a daily podcast with a wide listenership, conduct and record interviews, and research. • Articles. • Newsletter and social media copy. • Long-form fiction. • Copy for display advertisements. For years, I led an award-winning newsroom to produce weekly coverage of crime, politics, and events. Next, I was the final stamp on all external publications for the largest state government agency in Oklahoma. I also led a small team of writers and photographers to produce a monthly e-magazine for that agency. I keep up with yearly revisions of the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook, as well as developments and trends in the industry, including the ever-changing landscape of SEO. For editing work, here's my process: 1. You share your draft with me as a Google or Word doc. 2. I give it a pass for developmental edits, tracking my changes so you can accept or reject each one individually. This includes comments when necessary and an "overall feedback" breakdown at the top of the document. 3. Once your new draft is ready, I give it a second pass, this time focusing on proofreading/line editing. 4. What follows (and the timeline) depends on the unique needs of your content. Of course, all this is negotiable. If you have a project in mind, let's talk.

"Nathan was clear in what to expect from him in terms of work and delays, and he then delivered the job as agreed and within time. HIs communication was spotless during the entire process. Nathan edited my 3,800-word article by making my writing an order of magnitude more engaging, but he also provided me with feedback along the way about grammar rules and other writing conventions. From the work he provided I can tell that writing and editing are truly Nathan's craft, and not only that, he is actually good at it. This is exactly what you want when you hire someone for a copy editing job. Finally, because English is not my native language, Nathan's feedback was valuable beyond what I expected."

"Nathan is an exceptional editor and writing coach. While thorough and challenging in his feedback, he is compassionate for the writer's creative spirit, collaboratively working to help revise a piece into the absolute best piece it can be. This is probably due to the fact that Nathan is also an exceptional writer and creative mind. In addition to being able to draft and publish fantastic pieces of work that anyone would be proud to include on their site, he is passionate about the writing community and supporting other writers in their journeys and experiences. A great hire for anyone looking to improve their craft or bring improved craft into their content."

For six years, I was the editor of a monthly e-magazine for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. I was the copy editor and proofreader (AP style), and I was one of the writers and photographers. I did all of the page layout and photo editing. This is my final issue of In the Loop, published November 2019.
Monthly e-magazine for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services
Feature story about a state government employee with a fascinating life story, for an in-house e-magazine. I discovered the subject, interviewed him, conducted supplemental research, found royalty-free images, collected and edited images from the subject, wrote the article, wrote the headlines and cutlines, created the pages using Adobe InDesign, and published the article.
