 Professionally I'm known as Stephanie Slama, I'm bilingual in English and French. Originally just print, but for the past couple of decades also digital documents, presentations, videos, and websites. In that time I have covered all kinds of subject matter: both personal and corporate, from novels to complex Master's degree textbooks, and from sales proposals to financial reports. I also have years of experience guiding people and organizations through the process of print production, from concept, through design, all the way to printing and even self-publishing, via print-on-demand services. I began my career in the layout department of a printers in 1991. Computers in the publishing world were relatively new, and I was fresh from a computer programming course, so I suppose I seemed like a good hire: a systems analyst with coding abilities, eager to learn design. I helped them with technology and they taught me layout, design, typographic precision, and everything about the world of printing. They had a huge client list, working for businesses, corporations, governmental organizations. publishing houses, and individuals. I learned to design and layout all kinds of business documents, stationary, ads, magazines, catalogues, and books. My bosses also insisted that I learned the ins-and-outs of all aspects of the printing business. This was so that I could communicate directly with clients and guide them through things like branding, the reasons behind design choices, and what was, and was not, possible in the world of print. As the digital world grew I used my original background to expand into things like website coding & design, UI, and presentation decks. After a while, I realized that some of the skills I had developed were not really available outside of the printing industry, so I decided to try my luck as a freelance designer. Since then, I’ve worked with individuals, companies, authors, publishers, and printers, in multiple countries; I’ve had the privilege to work for individuals with a story to tell and organizations with a product to sell or a mission to share. I’m well-versed in typography, graphic design, and book design / layout. I can manage projects from the initial idea through to their completion. I have significant experience with complex, multi-faceted projects that involve multiple skillsets, and I have no trouble switching between those skills or employing several at once.
