Backend Engineer – API Integrations, Messaging & Automation UPDATE: We have broadened the desired skillset beyond the messaging interface described below, to include a full-stack aspect as well - essentially, working hand-in-hand with our lead developer to accelerate completion of the overall build. Owning the messaging piece is still a key requirement, although we are looking for someone experienced and flexible enough to assist in other areas - including troubleshooting issues as they arise with clients during our current beta period. Our lead developer needs a capable ally to complete delivery on our timetable. We would love to hear more about why you could be that person. Thank you for your interest! We’re preparing to launch an industry-specific marketing and growth platform designed to help businesses deliver high-performance, data-driven marketing campaigns through intelligent automation. Our platform combines real-time POS data, advanced analytics, AI-powered workflow automation, campaign management, customer engagement tools, and marketing attribution into a single system that helps businesses market more effectively and measure real results. The core platform is essentially complete and in active pilot deployments with select customers. We’re preparing for commercial launch within 60-90 days and are looking for a Backend Integration Engineer – Messaging & APIs to help bring one of our final major capabilities online: integrated SMS and email communications. This is an opportunity to join an exciting pre-launch product at a pivotal stage while working alongside our lead developer on a focused, well-defined engineering project. About the Role Our platform already includes a robust CRM, AI-powered audience segmentation and journey builder capabilities, advanced analytics, and real-time integration with commercial point-of-sale (POS) systems, among other features. The automation engine is designed to create campaigns and customer journeys. Your role is to connect those capabilities to the outside world by integrating the platform with SMS and email providers, building reliable messaging workflows, processing messaging events, and enabling campaign attribution. You’ll become the primary developer responsible for messaging integrations while working closely with our lead developer, who owns the overall platform architecture. Responsibilities * Integrate the platform with an SMS provider already in use by existing pilot customers to support immediate campaign testing (API documentation/access already secured) * Implement the platform's production messaging capabilities for A2P 10DLC SMS and transactional email. * Process inbound webhooks. * Track message delivery, replies, clicks, and opt-outs. * Build campaign attribution using tracked links and landing pages. * Design integrations so additional messaging providers can be added with minimal changes to the platform. * Design the messaging architecture to support future short code implementation. * Integrate with email providers (Mailgun, SendGrid, or similar). * Build clean internal APIs between our platform and external messaging providers. * Write clean, maintainable, production-quality code and documentation. Required Skills * Backend software development * REST API integration * Webhook development and processing * SQL databases * Git * Experience integrating third-party APIs Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable: * SMS messaging platforms * Twilio * Telnyx * Mailgun * SendGrid * A2P 10DLC * Queue processing * Background workers * Event-driven systems Contract Details This is a part-time contract expected to average approximately 10–20 hours per week over the next 2 months as we prepare for launch. The platform is in active pilot deployments, and this engagement is focused on completing one of the final capabilities before commercial release. While this engagement is intended to achieve a specific pre-launch objective, there may be opportunities for future work if the platform continues to grow and the working relationship is a good fit. Confidentiality Because this project involves proprietary software currently under development, applicants selected for interviews will be asked to sign a mutual Non-Disclosure Agreement before receiving demonstrations, architecture documentation, API documentation, or industry-specific information. To Apply Please answer the following: 1. Tell us about a communications or API integration project you’ve built that you’re proud of. 2. Which SMS and email platforms have you integrated with? 3. Describe your experience building webhook-driven systems. 4. If you were designing a messaging capability that initially supported one SMS provider but might later support several, how would you architect it so the rest of the application wouldn’t need to change? 5. Include links to your GitHub profile, portfolio, or examples of similar backend work, if available. 6. What is your expected hourly rate for this engagement? 7. What is your availability (days, times, etc.) and how soon can you start? To confirm you’ve read this posting in full, please begin your proposal with the words: “Integrated messaging is my world.” We’re looking for someone who enjoys connecting great software to the outside world through clean, scalable integrations. If you’re excited by messaging systems, APIs, and helping launch a SaaS product for real-world success, we’d love to hear from you. # # #

OVERVIEW We are a technical advisory firm that partners with VC-backed companies to design, build, and scale their engineering foundations. We embed with our clients as a core part of their technical team, not as outside consultants handing over a document, but as engineers who own the outcome alongside them. Our current client is a VC-backed company operating in the auto logistics space. They're at an exciting and critical stage: they have product-market fit, they have backing, and now they need to build the production infrastructure to match their ambitions. We've been brought in to lead that build, and we're looking for a senior full stack engineer to join us for it. This is a greenfield backend API platform built in TypeScript on Node.js with Express or Fastify, and you'd be involved from the very beginning. That means shaping the architecture, setting the patterns, and building something that will need to handle real production load in a fast-moving, operationally complex industry. The backend we're building needs to be reliable, well-structured, and built to grow. If you want to do meaningful backend work on a greenfield codebase, in a real industry with real complexity, working with a team that has high standards, this is the opportunity. WHAT YOU'LL BE BUILDING A production-grade backend API platform in TypeScript on Node.js, using Express or Fastify. Because we're starting from scratch, the early decisions carry significant weight and you'll be part of making them. API architecture, project structure, middleware conventions, authentication approach, error handling, observability, data access patterns: these are all on the table and we want engineers who have opinions about them informed by experience. Day-to-day you'll be writing and reviewing TypeScript, contributing to architecture and design discussions, collaborating with the team on Slack, and joining at least one Zoom sync per week with the broader team and client stakeholders. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR - 5 to 10 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend or full stack background. Specifically: - Fluent in TypeScript with a solid working knowledge of the Node.js runtime, including async patterns, error propagation, and performance characteristics, not just the surface API - Hands-on Express and/or Fastify experience with real APIs built using them, a clear understanding of their trade-offs, and the ability to make informed structural decisions without needing to be guided - A track record of shipping and operating production systems, having been accountable for something running live, having handled production incidents, and thinking seriously about reliability, logging, and failure modes. - Comfort operating in a greenfield environment with some ambiguity, able to ask the right questions, help define what isn't yet defined, and take ownership of outcomes rather than waiting for a fully formed spec. - Strong English communication skills, written and spoken. We're a distributed team, async-first on Slack, and we interface directly with a client whose business is moving fast. Clear communication is as important as clean code US-based strongly preferred with meaningful overlap with US business hours required for team and client collaboration NICE TO HAVE - Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) - Familiarity with authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC) - API versioning strategy experience - CI/CD pipeline experience - Domain familiarity with logistics, fleet management, or supply chain systems is a genuine bonus HOW WE WORK We are a tight team with high standards and low tolerance for vague communication or dropped balls. Slack is our primary channel, async-first with responsiveness expected during working hours. We sync on Zoom at least weekly, more often during active design and planning phases. We use Jira for our ticket management. You'll receive a Microsoft 365 account on hire for SSO access to all internal and client tooling from day one. We don't micromanage. What we do expect is proactive communication, early flagging of blockers, and the kind of ownership that comes naturally to engineers who treat a codebase as something worth getting right, not just getting done. On a greenfield project with a client at a pivotal growth stage, that distinction matters. HIRING PROCESS - Intro call (15 min) - the firm, the client, the project, your background, and your questions - Technical screen (if applicable, via Coderbyte) - Background check - standard criminal background check required for all hires, no exceptions - Offer and onboarding - Microsoft 365 account and full tooling access provisioned before day one HOW TO APPLY We read every proposal that makes a genuine effort. Please include: - A description of a production backend system you've built, including what it did, the scale it operated at, your specific contributions, and what decisions you made that you're proud of or would revisit today - Your honest assessment of your TypeScript and Node.js depth. We value specifics and self-awareness over a list of buzzwords Links to code, whether GitHub, open source contributions, a portfolio, or anything else that shows us how you think and work We work with companies at inflection points and we hold ourselves and the engineers we bring in to a high standard. If this project sounds like the kind of work you want to do, make that clear in your proposal and tell us why this domain, this stage, and this type of build appeals to you specifically.

Overview We're an independent research project building a wearable assistive device that delivers graded haptic (vibration) guidance cues to help a runner with visual impairment stay on course. We already have a working software simulator and a defined design direction — we now need an engineer to build a physical, body-worn prototype that a person can actually wear and test while running. This is a build-to-spec engagement: the concept and design come from our team, and you provide the engineering and fabrication to bring it to life. Scope — Functional prototype Functional prototype from off-the-shelf components (microcontroller, motion sensing, haptic actuator array, battery) Firmware implementing our cueing logic A wearable form factor (belt or vest) that stays securely in place and tolerates motion and sweat 1–2 working units we can field-test in controlled, supervised conditions Required skills Embedded firmware (C/C++) on ESP32, nRF52, or similar; BLE Haptic feedback — driving a vibration-motor array with graded, spatial patterns (e.g., DRV2605 or equivalent) IMU/motion-sensor integration Comfortable taking a concept to a working, body-worn prototype quickly Strong pluses e-textile / smart-garment or soft-goods integration (or a partner who handles it) Prior wearable or assistive/accessibility device work Basic mechanical/enclosure design Mission-driven research prototype, not a funded product launch — budget is reasonable but lean; we value resourcefulness and clear communication.
