“Fantastic work—an expert in her field and phenomenal at her craft.” This is just one of many top reviews from numerous satisfied clients. These reviews reflect my decades of professional editing experience, built on the foundation of my Master’s degree in English Studies and subsequent teaching proficiency at the secondary and college levels. I began my career as a senior editor for a highly regarded publishing house and later served as a corporate managing editor. As a freelance editor, I’ve had the privilege of working on hundreds of books and documents for publishers, independent authors, and a wide range of professionals—including attorneys, engineers, scientists, technology experts, nonprofit organizations, and more. Working with these clients has made my work both meaningful and rewarding. I also bring more than ten years of experience in the legal field as a legal administrative assistant, paralegal (with a paralegal certificate), and contract administrator. Because of this background, I am especially comfortable editing legal documents and working with attorneys. My technical editing background includes journal articles, white papers, reports, theses, and dissertations. Citation formatting is one of my specialties. I am highly experienced with The Chicago Manual of Style and APA and can easily adapt to other style guides. In addition to editing, I am the author of numerous middle-grade books, primarily biographies and historical topics. (You can find my books by searching “Sue Vander Hook” on Amazon.) My experience as an author gives me a deep appreciation for the writing process and the importance of thoughtful, careful editing. My experience and expertise can make your words and voice resonate and rise to an exceptional level. With great collaboration and communication, we can accomplish your goals together.

With over 20 years of experience and a B.A. in English Language and Literature. I specialize in editing, proofreading, and formatting across all genres, both fiction and nonfiction I am a volunteer editor for the Military Writers Society of America (MWSA), whose magazine, Dispatches, has won the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) award. Many of my clients have been first-time authors whose books are available on Amazon. I have had many repeat clients on Upwork and many more via personal referrals, as well as those from Histria Books, the publisher I have worked with many times. I have edited over 200 books, all of which have been published. As an editor, I read every word of your manuscript to enhance your dialog, when necessary, and make it shine. I work in MS Word and use the Track Changes feature to show my editorial changes and comments, highlighting areas that may need further work. I never change an author's tone or voice, and I always meet my deadlines. I have a site that lists many of the books I've worked on (it's easy to find). I have edited over 200 books, but some have working titles that change upon publication, and sometimes authors don't use their real names; therefore, it's difficult to find them and add them to my portfolio, which, sadly, on Upwork, only shows some of the books I've worked on. I prefer a fixed-rate fee of $2.50 per 500 words, which is usually more cost-effective than an hourly rate. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing your project. Best regards, Sheila Grimes

I learned to read at age three, and thus began my love affair with words. I am currently working as a freelance editor/proofreader/writer. I also worked as an editor and then Senior Acquisitions Editor for an indie publisher for two years. I have various hobbies and interests (music, health, outdoor activities, nutrition, natural living), and I am always looking to change things up. I have many years of experience as a hairstylist with specialties in naturally curly hair and organic color. My all-time passion is editing fiction, but I love working on many types of materials—both editing and writing. It is exhilarating to me to be able to take a piece of written work and tweak, polish, and prune it until it flows smoothly. I would love to have a chance to help you with your work!

In addition to working for decades doing full-time editorial work at major publishing companies, I have completed a significant number of editorial and proofreading freelance projects, both fiction and nonfiction, over the span of thirty years. My education has focused on history, religion, and genealogy, but my areas of interest are far wider. Until March 2025, I was a contract production editor for Alpha Publishing, working on their Internet/Computer/Technology school textbooks (Kindergarten through Grade 12). In addition to proofreading and copy editing, my responsibilities included photo selection, page quality assurance, and style consistency. Prior to that, for over twenty years I was a senior proofreader at the custom college textbook division of Pearson, handling a wide range of subjects and project types. As the focus of the company transitioned to online materials, I did copy editing, proofreading, and other quality assurance tasks in a variety of media. In the years before that, I worked for the trade book division of Addison-Wesley as a production editor, working on non-fiction books such as Friday Night Lights. I also worked for D.C. Heath as a copy editor, focusing on elementary through high school textbooks. I'm familiar with a range of style guides, including the Chicago Manual of Style, APA, AP, Words into Type, and others. In addition, I'm very proficient with Microsoft Word (including Track Changes), Adobe Acrobat for pdfs, and PowerPoint.

"Angela was incredible to work with! Her work was timely and accurate. She communicated clearly, kept me in the loop about her progress on the project, and was able to complete two different tasks (beta reading and copyediting) in advance of milestone deadlines." - Author's feedback on a 30K manuscript project. If you need a copy editor or proofreader: I'm your extra pair of eyes to detect typos, grammatical/syntax errors, confusing sentences or plot holes. Readers can be picky and too many errors can mean the difference between a glowing 5-star review and one that is well... less complimentary. If you need a beta reader: I provide an in-depth report focusing on characters, plot, pacing, style, flow and any particular concerns you have, to ensure your manuscript meets reader expectations and genre tropes. My Services: ☑️ Copy editing ☑️ Proofreading ☑️ Developmental editing ☑️ Beta reading Extra Info: ☑️ Romance specialist but interested in editing and proofreading most genres, including non-fiction ☑️ Native English speaker with a MA in English based in Edinburgh ☑️ 12+ years of writing, copy editing and proofreading experience ☑️ Self-published author ☑️ Timely turnaround (1 week for a 60K word copy edit / proofread) ☑️ Prefer Word.docx using track changes and highlighted comments (but Google Docs OK too) ☑️ Delivery: a tracked changes version and a clean version of your manuscript. ☑️ UK English or US English - either is fine If you need an experienced, affordable copy editor, proofreader or beta reader with a quick turnaround, contact me for a quote!
