During my 35-year run as a writer and editor, I tried a bit of everything before finally finding my home in the glorious madness of narrative design.
I've paid the bills as a comedy writer (stand-up, sketch, radio) and newspaper editor. I wrote a comic-book series endorsed by Clive Barker and edited many many others, including a whole lot of books for Scout Comics. I wrote/directed the horror movie THE WRONG HOUSE and played monsters in several other films. For the video game EPIC TAVERN, I created hundreds of quests, more than 150 playable characters with unique backstories, and did extensive worldbuilding. For MURDER ON THE MIDWAY (which I also coded), I designed dialogue trees and created a fully-functioning traveling carnival loaded with dozens of memorable characters.
I recently cowrote the 10-episode audio series UNDERTOW: BLOOD FOREST and wrote the standalone audio ghost story RETURN TO BLACKOUT POINT, both of which were produced and distributed by Realm.
I thrive on complexity, I have a quiet, dedicated home office deep in the Maine wilderness and impeccable references as a remote writer and editor. It is my firm belief that having worked in damn-near every storytelling medium known to humankind has prepared me to handle anything a project throws at me.

Most companies don’t struggle because their product is bad.
They struggle because their growth system isn’t built yet.
That’s where I come in.
I help companies design and run the full growth and go-to-market engine behind their business. Strategy, execution, and ongoing optimization, all connected and helping each other.
Many of the clients I work with are founders or leadership teams who need to grow but don’t have the time, internal team, or specialized experience to build a marketing system that actually performs.
Instead of hiring five different vendors, they bring me in to design and manage the whole pipeline.
I help companies build:
Growth & Go-To-Market Strategy
• Market positioning and messaging
• ICP and competitor analysis
• Growth roadmaps and testing strategy
• Offer structuring and demand generation
Full Lead Pipeline Ownership
• Funnel design and optimization
• Landing pages and CRO
• Lead capture systems and analytics
• Conversion tracking and performance analysis
SEO, AI Search & Organic Growth
• Technical SEO
• Content strategy
• Programmatic and scalable content systems
• Optimization for Google and LLM discovery (AI search visibility)
Paid Acquisition
• Google Ads
• Meta Ads
• LinkedIn Ads
• Creative testing and performance optimization
Websites That Actually Convert
• Strategy-first website design
• UX and conversion-focused structure
• Webflow / WordPress / custom builds
• Landing page systems for campaigns
Marketing Assets That Support Growth
• Sales decks and presentations
• Ad creatives
• Marketing collateral
• Trade show booths and materials
• Campaign graphics and brand systems
Industries where I excel at:
• Healthcare and health services
• B2B companies
• SaaS products
• Customizable and complex eCommerce
These industries usually have longer sales cycles, higher ticket services, and complex messaging. My work focuses on making those offers clearer, easier to understand, and easier to buy.
⸻
How I work:
I tend to work best with companies that:
• Are serious about growth
• Need someone who can connect strategy, design, marketing, and technology
• Want a partner who can own the process end-to-end
Some clients bring me in for specific projects like a website redesign, marketing campaign, or ad system. Others keep me involved long-term to continuously improve their growth engine.
Either way, the goal is the same:
Build a marketing system that consistently attracts the right leads and converts them into customers.

Born and raised in Bournemouth in the south of the UK, I was trained in archeology and anthropology at Cambridge University (BA, 2000), where I was one of only two students in my cohort to be awarded a distinction (starred first). After graduating, I spent two years working as a Java developer in Bristol, an experience that cemented a lifelong interest in programming and data.
In 2003, I moved to Ulaanbator in the Republic of Mongolia to study the Mongolian language. During this period I won a competition for funding for a PhD on religious movements in Inner Mongolia in northern China. I completed the PhD at Cambridge University in 2007, and on the strength of the thesis I was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at St John’s College to extend the study.
Between 2007 and 2020, I won funding for, and completed, another postdoc and was lecturer and then senior lecturer for the universities of Cambridge, Manchester and Kent, covering Anthropology (including economic and political theory), social science research methods, and religious studies. At Manchester and Kent I held permanent positions (the nearest equivalent to being tenured in the US).
I started a consulting business with my wife in 2010, and in 2020 when the pandemic hit, I decided to dedicate myself to it full time. The business originally provided academically grounded market research and communication support for businesses working with China. In 2022, we rebranded in recognition of the fact that our area had been extended beyond China to the rest of the world.
We are now based in the province of Seville in the south of Spain, and I split my time between academic and commercial activities. I maintain a visiting position at Complutense University, Madrid, mentor some of my former students, and continue to publish.
I have carried out ethnographic field research in Inner Mongolia (China), Taiwan, the UK, France, Belgium and Ecuador.
I have published in a wide range of top peer-reviewed journals and with leading academic presses. You can see a list of most of my publications on Google Scholar. My work focuses on virtue ethics, self-realisation, self-mastery especially in the context of religious and political movements.

It is lovely to meet you, and I am keen to help with all research, writing, and editorial needs. I am especially interested in helping to tell personal stories. I am an historian by both training and profession. For two decades, I have studied legal, political, and rhetorical histories, and I have often used biography as a lens into these. I have decided to bring this experience to Upwork in order to better serve people who wish to write about their lives and world.
In this process of my research, I have worked with families and individuals to help them tell their stories, often including difficult retelling. I excel in helping the individual story to shine while also contextualizing it within a bigger picture. My additional strengths lie in research and argument crafting, as well as all stages of the writing process--from drafts to writing to copy-editing and proofreading. Much of my work has focused on telling and helping to tell very personal and often sensitive stories. I have also written dozens of successful grant applications to fund my work and can assist you with your applications as well.
I am primarily a writer, but I also serve as a reviewer and an editor for academic presses. I have experience in writing for academic audiences as well as for the general public. I am keen to help make your work more appealing, readable, and public facing.
I have worked internationally and in the US, so I enjoy assisting with cultural translation. My experience includes planning and leading international study opportunities, and I hope to bring these travel planning skills to my Upwork clients. While my particular interests lie within these fields, I look forward to working outside of them as well. Additionally, I am a college professor so am well trained and equipped to coach writers toward specific goals in a way that is accessible and easy to understand. Overall, I hope to help you craft more engaging interactions with the world around you during whatever stage you need.

If you’ve written a manuscript but feel it isn’t quite there yet, you’re not alone. Many strong ideas get lost in unclear structure, uneven flow, or writing that doesn’t fully capture the author’s voice. In addition, lots of clients are using AI-generated content these days—and while that may be fine in principle, content written by a bot tends to be littered with predictable, canned language that turns readers off.
You want your voice preserved. That’s where I come in.
I help authors transform promising drafts into clear, compelling manuscripts that readers trust and enjoy reading. My clients come to me for more than fixing up grammar and typos—they want writing that communicates their ideas with confidence, reads smoothly, and reflects their tone at the highest level. And, most importantly in this new AI era, they want their content to sound and feel unmistakably human—whether it was written using artificial intelligence or not—without raising any red flags.
My role is to refine your manuscript so it communicates exactly what you intended—only clearer, sharper, and more engaging.
Editing That Goes Beyond Grammar
AI tools can correct punctuation and spelling, but they can’t do the deeper editorial work that makes a book truly effective.
Within the greater context of the full manuscript, they can’t:
• strengthen structure and logical flow throughout
• refine tone and readability
• recognize subtle inconsistencies
• improve rhythm and pacing
• preserve and maintain an author’s authentic voice
That’s where a professional editor like me makes all the difference.
My approach focuses on clarity, flow, and voice—ensuring that your manuscript reads naturally while maintaining the integrity of your ideas.
Editing Services
Depending on your manuscript’s needs, I offer:
Developmental Editing: Big-picture refinement of structure, argument, pacing, and narrative flow.
Line Editing: Sentence-level editing that improves clarity, tone, rhythm, and readability.
Content Editing: Strengthening organization, transitions, and the communication of ideas.
Copyediting & Proofreading: Meticulous correction of grammar, punctuation, consistency, and formatting.
Experience
To date, I’ve edited 100+ manuscripts that have gone on to successful publication, and my Upwork clients always respond with enthusiastic five-star reviews. I’ve edited nonfiction across a wide range of genres, including women's nonfiction, self-help, memoir, humor, business and leadership books, self-help, and narrative nonfiction. I've also worked with organizations like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Sun Media, UNESCO, and UNICEF, as well as countless media and publishing houses across the globe. My author clients include therapists, professional coaches, business leaders, TED Talk speakers, and subject matter experts, in addition to brand-new authors who are eager to get their message out into the world.
Before freelancing full time, I worked as a college professor in the Humanities and as a trained journalist, which gives me both analytical depth and a strong instinct for clear, effective communication. I'm armed with a degree in English, a three-year advanced diploma in print and broadcast journalism, and a professional publishing studies certification.
What It’s Like to Work With Me
Great editing is thoughtful, collaborative, and transparent.
You’ll always know the status of your project, and I remain available throughout the process to answer questions or clarify edits. My goal is simple: When we’re finished, your manuscript will be clearer, stronger, and ready for readers.
If you’re looking for an editor who will treat your work with care, precision, and professional insight, I’d be happy to discuss your project.
Send me a message, tell me about your manuscript, and let's get started.
