How to Become a Freelance Amazon FBA Expert
Do you have excellent logistical and organizational skills? Do you like working with large inventories and managing sales resources and strategies across global marketplaces? Then you may have what it takes to become an Amazon FBA expert and start your Amazon business.
What does an Amazon FBA expert do?
Amazon FBA stands for Fulfillment by Amazon and is one of the options offered by Amazon for ecommerce merchants who wish to sell their products on Amazon. A merchant can send their inventory to Amazon warehouses, and Amazon will take care of the storage, packing, and shipping once a customer purchases an item. An Amazon FBA expert is someone who is intimately familiar with the FBA process and can help with inventory management, maintain stock supplies, optimize product listings, manage promotions, and plenty more.
Companies that own brands also have the option of claiming products on Amazon and can produce brand pages to market and promote their product ranges. Merchants may also choose to advertise their products on Amazon, so an Amazon FBA expert may also be expected to help run Amazon marketing campaigns and manage ads for products sold on Amazon.
What skills do I need to become an Amazon FBA expert?
An Amazon FBA expert will need intimate knowledge of the Amazon seller marketplace administration panel and related services. This includes knowing how to create new product pages, conducting product research (finding best-sellers and profitable products), listing inventory on existing product pages, sourcing, drop-shipping, and managing stock and price levels and may also involve processing orders and dealing with customer messages and feedback.
A common request of Amazon FBA experts by merchants is to obtain the “buy box”—to become the primary vendor for Amazon’s one-click purchase option ahead of all other sellers of the same item. Achieving this requires a balance of positive feedback, price competitiveness, and speedy order fulfillment.
Due to the volume of sales on Amazon and the fierce competition, many Amazon FBA sellers also use third-party tools to manage inventory and maintain competitiveness on price. As all sellers on Amazon may choose their own pricing, merchants and Amazon FBA experts must be vigilant to maintain competitive pricing, and many make use of third-party tools to monitor and automatically update product prices in response to the competition.
Finally, an Amazon FBA expert should have a general understanding of marketing strategy to sell their products. In particular, it’s important to have an understanding of Amazon advertising (PPC, SEO, and product optimization).
Fulfilled by merchant vs fulfilled by Amazon
Fulfillment by Amazon allows merchants to sell their products on Amazon while letting Amazon take care of the order fulfillment process. Merchants may also choose to take responsibility for the order fulfillment process themselves, which is known as fulfillment by merchant (FBM). The administration back end used for these two fulfillment options is very similar, so many merchants choose to do both. Therefore, an Amazon FBA expert should at least be familiar with the FBM process, as there is a lot of overlap.
How does the FBA process work?
One of the primary responsibilities of an Amazon FBA expert is managing shipments and deliveries of inventory to the appropriate Amazon warehouse. Creating a new shipment is done within the seller dashboard of a merchant’s account. The process of creating a new shipment consists of identifying the products to be delivered in order, the quantity of each individual product, and the overall weight of each package. Each box or pallet sent must contain a bill of the products inside and the appropriate labels on the outside, both for collection by a courier and for Amazon to process once it is received at its warehouse.
An Amazon FBA expert may be expected to deal with managing the logistics of packing and sending boxes and pallets for delivery to Amazon warehouses on a regular basis. This will also include tracking the delivery of each parcel so that a merchant’s inventory is always accounted for and understanding which products are in transit, which have yet to be collected, and which are available for sale.
What are the core Amazon FBA expert job responsibilities?
The core responsibilities of an Amazon FBA expert involve being responsible for the logistics of all shipments to the correct Amazon warehouse, which involves using Amazon’s systems to create new FBA shipments, ensure all products and proper packaging/documentation is included, and tracking the shipment from collection to receipt at the Amazon warehouse. From there, the FBA expert is responsible for ensuring that the product listing information, inventory quantity, and pricing are correct for each product.
The Amazon seller marketplace is separated into a variety of geographical marketplaces, such as the U.S., Japan, the UK, and various other European countries. It is possible to sell in only one marketplace or to sell internationally across multiple Amazon marketplaces. This is possible with both FBA and FBM options. An Amazon FBA expert may be expected to manage product inventories and pricing (including different currencies) across multiple Amazon marketplaces.
Should I get an Amazon FBA expert certification?
While there is no official Amazon FBA certification, Amazon does offer what it calls Seller University. This is a comprehensive knowledge base that includes videos, articles, and tutorials that thoroughly cover all aspects of FBA, from explaining the differences among UPC, GTIN, and ISBN product IDs to understanding Amazon selling policies, setting up your Seller Central account, and knowing what is and is not allowed to be listed on Amazon.
It is highly recommended that anyone looking to become an Amazon FBA expert make use of Seller University. FBA is a powerful and comprehensive system that supports the processing and shipping of millions of orders for merchants on an annual basis. Understanding exactly how to optimize FBA practices to maximize the return on revenue for clients is a key skill for Amazon FBA experts, and the materials contained within Seller University are invaluable.
