OPEN TO NEW CLIENTS. Even if the online badge is off. KDP specialist. Editor. Proofreader. Professional handbook formatting.
I work promptly and am always willing to go the extra mile for my clients. I have experience editing and proofreading for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting for Kindle or other publishing platforms.
I do not use AI in my work and decline to work on projects done with it.
I am also highly experienced in line editing for clarity and continuity and an experienced beta reader who can provide detailed feedback for an author. I am an experienced Word user and always work with "Track Changes." I also format handbooks. I do not do plagiarism checks.
My experience includes Academic proofreading, editing, formatting, and knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style, Turabian, MLA, and even Harvard and Vancouver referencing styles. I'm reasonable in price and timing.
I want to provide the most constructive feedback a client could ask for and improve the clarity and conciseness of the project I am working on. Please remember that ANY edit or proof always needs at least two rounds. NO ONE can/will catch everything in the first round, therefore, all of my projects include a second proof.
Please do not ask me to connect via Telegram or outside the platform.
To see an example of my work, from editing and proofreading to formatting for publishing via KDP (print and ebook) please check out the books in my profile and portfolio. I look forward to helping you!

I edit books for a living: developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and ghostwriting, across fiction, memoir, and nonfiction. Twenty-five years in, Top Rated with 100% Job Success, and a traditionally published memoirist.
My career began under the mentorship of Frank E. Taylor, a former chief editor at McGraw Hill. Over his career Frank edited some of the biggest names of the twentieth century, George Orwell and Ralph Ellison among them. He taught me to read a manuscript from an acquiring editor's point of view: does it deliver on its promise, hold the reader, earn its ending? I've applied that lens to every book since.
Developmental editing is the deep work: structure, pacing, character, voice, what's missing, what's not earning its place. You get an editorial letter, margin comments, and a revision roadmap that tells you where to start.
Line editing happens at the sentence level. I'll wake up the drowsy passages and tune the ones singing off-key, all while keeping your voice intact.
Copy editing is the final polish: grammar, syntax, consistency, and continuity, tracked on a style sheet, the details that make a manuscript ready for publication.
Ghostwriting is confidential and collaborative. I've ghostwritten a published trade nonfiction title and worked behind the scenes with writers across genres. Your voice, your book. I do the heavy lifting.
If your draft was AI-assisted and reads like it was written by a very confident robot, I can fix that too. I've built a working method for finding algorithmic rhythms in prose and rewriting them into a voice only a human could own.
Some of my clients write technical books. I've edited geologists, neuroscientists, attorneys, and psychologists, and on that work your terminology survives the edit intact while the reading around it gets cleaner.
My own first book, In My Father's Arms (University of Wisconsin Press), was praised by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Dillard and by Edmund White, and the Oxford American named it one of the best Southern books.
A recent Upwork client: "It is obvious I have found a master writer who is also versant in the publication world. The few writers I have hired through UpWork have been a mixed bag, but mostly disappointing. You are a stark exception."
If you'd like to see how I work before committing, send a few pages and I'll do a short sample edit so you can judge the fit on your own manuscript.
I'm a member of the Authors Guild, which vets for professional publishing credentials, and the Editorial Freelancers Association. If we work together, I'll stay in touch with you throughout the process. Send me a message and tell me what you're working on.

Hi, I’m Fred Aceves. I'm an author and passionate book editor and coach.
As a published author with HarperCollins, my work has been honored with multiple accolades.
I know firsthand how deeply personal and challenging the writing process can be. That’s why I bring the same care and dedication to my clients’ work as I do to my own. Whether you're just starting out or preparing your manuscript for submission or publication, I’m here to help you bring your vision to life.
While I don't use AI in my own editing work, I stay current on AI developments and understand its ethical use, helping writers navigate tools that support research or logistics without compromising their personal voice and expression.
Below, you’ll find the services I offer. Not sure which one fits your needs? Just send me a message with a bit about your project and where you are in the process. I’ll point you in the right direction—even if that means recommending someone else.
DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING
Also known as substantive or content editing, this is where we shape the big picture of your book.
For novelists: I focus on the essential storytelling elements—plot, structure, character development, pacing, setting, conflict, tone, and theme. Early drafts often need reworking or reshuffling, and I’ll help you strengthen what’s working while identifying what can be cut or improved.
For nonfiction authors: I can help you build a clear, compelling structure, fine-tune your argument, and enhance your book’s flow. I’ll also help with chapter titles, subheadings, and ways to present information (or data) more clearly and visually.
LINE EDITING & COPY EDITING
Many editors specialize in one or the other—I offer both. That means more cohesive, efficient editing—and better value for you.
Line Editing: I’ll help you polish your prose on a sentence level, improving clarity, flow, rhythm, and tone. This is about making your writing sing.
Copy Editing: I’ll also address grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency, and accuracy.
BOOK COACHING
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just unsure where to begin, book coaching might be exactly what you need.
Does any of the following resonate?
I want to write a book, but I don’t know how to start.
I’ve started—but I can’t seem to finish.
The plot or structure feels like a mess.
I’m creatively stuck.
I’ve got pages of notes, but no clear path forward.
I wonder if I have what it takes or if anyone will even want to read it.
You’re not alone—and you don’t have to do it alone. As your coach, I’ll help you:
• Build a clear roadmap for your book
• Set (and meet!) consistent writing goals
• Get regular, personalized feedback
• Brainstorm and troubleshoot ideas
• Stay motivated and confident
• Move from idea to finished manuscript
Ready to take the next step? Get in touch, and let’s talk about how we can work together.
The following is just some of my clients' feedback that you can find in my Upwork history:
"Fred is a very accomplished, high-level editor with deep experience in editing nonfiction. I worked with Fred early in the conception state of writing my book and he eventually helped lead me towards a breakthrough that set me on the right path to finishing the book to great reviews."
- Chris Shaver, author of Relationship Needs: Ten Shortcuts
"Wonderful feedback and guidance helping me work through the content doubts I had. Always reliable, always offering valuable insights on how to progress. I highly recommend him."
- Henrik Jensen, author of Masculine Meditations
"Fred was outstanding to work with. An expert editor and it was great communicating with him. He totally got what I needed and delivered. Highly, highly recommend."
- James A. Cosby, author of Rock Music, Authority and Western Culture
"Fred has not only helped me ask the right questions about a journey I’ve never navigated before, but he’s also provided helpful resources along the way. These have made the entire process feel much more approachable and manageable. His expertise and support have been invaluable to my progress."
- Dan Pardi, MS, PhD, CEO of Vivendi Health and author of the forthcoming What is Health?
"Fred is thorough, patient, and committed to a level of quality that pushes you to rise to meet it. He's an editor who respects both your intention as a writer and the intelligence of your reader. Highly recommended."
- Brandon Boyd, author of Undomesticated
"Fred did an amazing job editing some essays for me. He took the initiative to ask some great questions that took the piece to the next level."
- Larry Tadlock, memoirist and stand-up comedian

Writing a book is a marathon, not a sprint, and I congratulate you for all of the passion, hard work, and discipline it took to get to this point in the publishing process. You’ve put Herculean effort into creating your manuscript, and now you naturally want to make sure it’s perfect—that’s where I come in!
With decades of experience at a successful publishing company, I am a meticulous editor with a proven track record of spotting even the smallest of errors. I personally proofread and edit every document sent to me (no AI), and my mission is to elevate your writing to make it the best it can be while retaining your authentic voice.
For 15+ years, I was a senior developing editor at a major publishing company, helping authors like you ready their books for the world. I have vast experience in multiple genres including: health, diet/fitness, business, sports, psychology, parenting, mindfulness, women’s issues, cookbooks, memoirs, and more.
I'm proud to say that many of the books I edited received praise from Publisher’s Weekly, the New York Times Book Review, The Midwest Book Review, and more. Our books won numerous awards including The Nautilus Award and the Ben Franklin Literary Award.
How Can I Help?
I provide comprehensive copyediting and line editing for style, structure, language, phrasing, repetition, clarity, cohesiveness, and conciseness. With an in-depth knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style Guidelines, I proofread for spelling, grammar, punctuation, tense agreement, typos, and factual errors. I also offer final page checks after typesetting to ensure consistency in formatting elements, including front and back matter, running heads, footers, lists, boxes, capitalization in headlines, and more. I have beta read approximately 100 books in my career, providing detailed feedback to authors in a variety of genres. I am insightful, thoughtful, candid but kind.
Why Me?
As a published author myself, and an editor who worked with literary agents daily, I offer a unique skill set. I've been immersed in all cycles and sides of the writing, publishing, and PR processes that make a book successful. I have the utmost respect for books and the people who make them. I'd love to help you make your manuscript (or newsletter or article or blog post) shine. Let’s get to work!
