Hello, potential clients! Through the Collegiate Program at my high school, I was able to graduate from Eastern Florida State College before graduating from high school. I was first introduced to creative writing at this college, and I fell in love with it. It inspired me to pursue a degree in English (with a focus on creative writing) at UCF. I particularly enjoyed the fiction-writing and script-writing workshops. In these workshops, I was able to edit other students’ short stories and scripts (usually ten pages long). I checked for proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I also looked for consistency in character dialogue, formatting (for the scripts), and tone in a piece. My main goal is to help your piece of writing become the best that it can be. My love for reading and attention to detail will be of service to you. Whether it is a short story or a full-length novel, I am here to help make it stronger :). GHOSTWRITING: Need help drafting a novel or screenplay? With your outline, I can turn your notes into a cohesive draft! Note: I do not work with erotica or graphic content. Feel free to contact me for a quote :). PROJECT STRUCTURE: I do fixed-price contracts only. Message me with the details of your project, and I'll send you a breakdown of milestones. I require an upfront payment once we start the contract: 25%, 30%, or 50% depending on the project. All projects have a starting cost of $350. I'm open to negotiate with existing clients :). I communicate by Upwork messages only (no video or phone calls). I'm reliable and very prompt; you won't have to wait long for an answer :). I can't wait to work with you!Line Editing

Hi, I’m Fred Aceves—author and passionate book editor and coach. As a published author with HarperCollins, my work has been honored with multiple accolades, including: A Kirkus Best Book of 2017 A New York Public Library Best Book of the Year An ALA/YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults Selection I know firsthand how deeply personal and challenging the writing process can be. That’s why I bring the same care and dedication to my clients’ work as I do to my own. Whether you're just starting out or preparing your manuscript for submission or publication, I’m here to help you bring your vision to life. Below, you’ll find the services I offer. Not sure which one fits your needs? Just send me a message with a bit about your project and where you are in the process. I’ll point you in the right direction—even if that means recommending someone else. DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING Also known as substantive or content editing, this is where we shape the big picture of your book. For novelists: I focus on the essential storytelling elements—plot, structure, character development, pacing, setting, conflict, tone, and theme. Early drafts often need reworking or reshuffling, and I’ll help you strengthen what’s working while identifying what can be cut or improved. For nonfiction authors: I can help you build a clear, compelling structure, fine-tune your argument, and enhance your book’s flow. I’ll also help with chapter titles, subheadings, and ways to present information (or data) more clearly and visually. LINE EDITING & COPY EDITING Many editors specialize in one or the other—I offer both. That means more cohesive, efficient editing—and better value for you. Line Editing: I’ll help you polish your prose on a sentence level, improving clarity, flow, rhythm, and tone. This is about making your writing sing. Copy Editing: I’ll also address grammar, punctuation, spelling, consistency, and accuracy. BOOK COACHING If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just unsure where to begin, book coaching might be exactly what you need. Does any of the following resonate I want to write a book, but I don’t know how to start. I’ve started—but I can’t seem to finish. The plot or structure feels like a mess. I’m creatively stuck. I’ve got pages of notes, but no clear path forward. I wonder if I have what it takes—or if anyone will even want to read it. You’re not alone—and you don’t have to do it alone. As your coach, I’ll help you: • Build a clear roadmap for your book • Set (and meet!) consistent writing goals • Get regular, personalized feedback • Brainstorm and troubleshoot ideas • Stay motivated and confident • Move from idea to finished manuscript Ready to take the next step? Get in touch, and let’s talk about how we can work together. The following is just some of my clients' feedback that you can find in my Upwork history: "Fred is a very accomplished, high-level editor with deep experience in editing nonfiction. I worked with Fred early in the conception state of writing my book and he eventually helped lead me towards a breakthrough that set me on the right path to finishing the book to great reviews." - Chris Shaver, author of Relationship Needs: Ten Shortcuts "Wonderful feedback and guidance helping me work through the content doubts I had. Always reliable, always offering valuable insights on how to progress. I highly recommend him." - Henrik Jensen, author of Masculine Meditations "Fred was outstanding to work with. An expert editor and it was great communicating with him. He totally got what I needed and delivered. Highly, highly recommend." - James A. Cosby, author of Rock Music, Authority and Western Culture "Fred has not only helped me ask the right questions about a journey I’ve never navigated before, but he’s also provided helpful resources along the way. These have made the entire process feel much more approachable and manageable. His expertise and support have been invaluable to my progress." - Dan Pardi, MS, PhD, CEO of Vivendi Health and author of the forthcoming What is Health? "Fred did an amazing job editing some essays for me. He took the initiative to ask some great questions that took the piece to the next level. He was very encouraging and easy to work with. I also felt safe to share and explore any ideas. He has the right combination of expert editing skill while at the same time having a broader perspective on writing from his own experience that can really help." - Larry Tadlock, memoirist and stand-up comedian "Fred was an absolute delight to work with. He went well beyond what was expected and gave the book the polish it needed." - Scott Annan, author of We Are EnoughLine Editing

What's worse than an error in the opening sentence of a business proposal or term paper that you spent weeks putting together? Nothing! As a line editor, I am concerned more with style than structure; I know the rules and I know when to break them. I will tell you if your writing, warts and all, is pleasurable to read. And how to fix it if it's not. I will work closely with you to elevate your use of language. Line by line, we'll go through your manuscript examining exactly how your tone and emotion flow through your words. Are your action scenes clear? Does your dialogue flow like real speech? Do you repeat certain words or phrases? Are your transitions smooth or chaotic? It’s all about the art of writing. A line edit is personally tailored to your style. It will identify your writing’s strengths and weaknesses and help you perfect the distinct tone and personality that will make your work stand out. I have a BA in Creative Writing from Rollins College. I've helped over 150 writers make the most of their talent.Line Editing

Having served as a professional editor and writer for more than ten years now, working with both fiction and nonfiction, my passion revolves around helping authors and publishers find the full potential of their manuscripts. My work is loosely split between working with indie authors and publishers, and so I also do work on blurbs, synopses, and queries, but only for works that I've edited or been directly involved in as a writing coach/consultant. In all tasks, though, I have an excellent eye for detail, and with my extended background as a writer and teacher, I can be depended upon to offer professional guidance at every turn, eliminate errors and inconsistencies, and meet all deadlines. By turns, I work as a writing coach, editor, and ghostwriter, matching my talents to my clients' needs. In each of these roles, I only take on projects that suit my skills--so, if you ask me to edit or write in a genre where I have no experience, I'll be the first to tell you I'm not your ideal fit. But, when I do take on a project, you can be sure that it will become a top priority and receive the attention and skill it deserves. When it comes to nonfiction, I'm got a varied background that crosses a variety of disciplines and types of writing. I've edited and copyedited a number of dissertations and academic articles within the humanities and sciences, and I've developed a close familiarity with details of grammar and citation styles (as I've worked as both a freelance copyeditor and as the assistant director of a university-level writing center). That said, academic work is no longer my focus, and you'll more often find me working on memoirs, self-help and business books, books related to health and wellness, and books that have some intersection with social justice, science/nature, current events, or culture. I've also worked on a number of books related to travel and history, as well as philosophy. In fiction, I have experience in various genres, including (but not limited to): science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, horror, suspense/thrillers, mystery, romance (of various subgenres, but especially paranormal, suspense, billionaire, dark, and contemporary), historical fiction, and literary fiction. My experience focuses on adult and YA material--I'm not the best fit for middle grade or children's books. Regarding editing, specifically: I've been freelancing on a full-time basis since August of 2014, and I love keeping an eclectic calendar so that I always have a fresh eye for each new manuscript. I track all work via Word's Track Changes feature, using the comments feature for feedback as needed. In terms of writing, I hire out as a fixer just as often as a writer--this means that I work through a complete novel, elevating the writing and 'fixing' issues that come up in relation to the story, character, pacing, genre, etc. Essentially, hiring me as a 'fixer' means that you've got a complete draft, and it's in decent shape, but you know it needs work and want it to reach the next level without your being directly involved in the revision. Many of my 'fixing' jobs come to me because an author needs to adjust word count up or down significantly, but is at a loss for how to do so without detracting from a project's quality or bringing in outside help. With nonfiction, I need to be 100% sure that I'm the right fit for a project before taking it on, so engaging in a detailed conversation ahead of hiring is always a must. My work in ghostwriting fiction has been focused around paranormals, suspense, romance, horror, SFF, and nonfiction, and I only hire out as a ghostwriter for adult work (vs YA). Lastly, I often serve as a writing coach, helping authors complete their first full manuscript or finish a project that's been languishing on their desktop for years. I take an immense amount of pride in my track record for helping first-time writers succeed as writers, and limit the number of coaching clients I take on at any given time in order to make sure I'm available on short-notice for meetings, crises, and content reviews/edits. This process looks different for every client and project, as I tailor my approach to each individual and job, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how it might best work for you.Line Editing

Finding your first editor or a new editor can be a scary experience . . . You have a book manuscript that needs line editing and copyediting. Maybe you’re a new author and have never worked with an editor before. Or you’re a seasoned writer and need a re-edit due to a previous bad editing experience. • You want your readers to have a good experience with your book. • You want your content to be error-free. • You want your Amazon reviews to praise your excellent content rather than focus on grammar and spelling mistakes, poor sentence structure, repetition, or inconsistencies in your storyline. • You need someone who can really focus on the details, cohesiveness, and flow of your book. • You want an editor who’s responsive and focuses on YOUR writing and YOUR needs and keeps YOUR voice…and one who doesn’t disappear immediately after the initial edit. You have invested a lot of time and energy into your book — and your editor should be willing to do the same. My years as an English teacher and an editor will ensure that you end up with a manuscript you can be proud of. I look forward to working together to fine-tune your book before publication! ========= Line Editing ========= Good writing is more than just good grammar. The focus of line editing is on the words in your book and how they’re put together. A line edit looks at creative content, writing style, and language use at both sentence and paragraph levels and can include edits for: • Flow • Readability • Repetition • Clarity • Word Choice & Wordiness • Awkward Phrasing • Tense consistency • Point of View • General Consistency • Dialogue Issues ========== Copyediting ========== Copyediting is a lighter form of editing that involves getting things right mechanically. When doing a copyedit, I dig into each sentence on its own to be sure there are no errors, focusing mainly on syntax and grammar rather than the manuscript as a whole. This is best done after a line edit, when you're confident that your book as a whole reads well but you'd like to be sure your final product is professionally polished. All edits are made with the intention of keeping your voice intact throughout your book. Your content will be edited on time, according to your specified deadline. All edits will be made using Track Changes in Microsoft Word. When I find errors in consistency, awkward phrasing, or plot issues, I'll leave a comment explaining the problem so that you know what needs to be addressed. The initial edit will be returned to you so that you can review my changes and either accept or reject them as you choose. My fee always includes a second read-through after you've had a chance to accept/reject/question the edits I've made. I am committed to your complete satisfaction and getting your project finished on time and within budget! See my portfolio for some samples from books I have edited!Line Editing

"Joel is fantastic to work with! He is very responsive and easy to communicate with. He understands the importance of meeting expectations and deadlines. I'd highly recommend hiring Joel!" This was just one piece of feedback from one of over 50 different clients who I have done projects on this platform. Do you want to be the next one? Whether it is an about page for a website, a full memoir, video scripts, or even some articles for your website, only a talented writer who knows all about you can create something like that. Well guess what? I'm that writer. My specialty is biographical writing. If you are looking for somebody who can take your experiences, purpose, or anything else about you into something that will show your readers, viewers, or listeners who exactly you are and what you are about, look no further. Here is what you get when working with me: -Timely responses: I'll respond in the middle of the night if necessary! Oh, you want proof of that? Check out when I sent my proposal. Most of them are sent during the middle of the night. So like I said, I'll respond in the middle of the night if it's necessary. -Nearly perfect spelling, grammar, and sentence structure BEFORE delivery and UNLIMITED revisions: Save money on editors! -Lightning-fast delivery and turnaround times: How would you like to have 1000+ words delivered to you in only TWELVE HOURS? Name ONE other freelance writer who does that. Oh right, no one can. Except me. Because I get things done with lightning quick precision. -Maximum trust/credibility: Take a look at the top left corner. My Job Success Rate as a freelancer has been at least 90% ever since I joined the platform...in late 2016. Other "copywriting superstars" on this platform? Maybe, MAYBE a success score of 75%. So now you know why you should choose me. Here is how to work with me. -Click the "invite to job" button if you want me to write something for you. -I will then get a notification that you have invited me to work with you. -After that, I will message you with my bid along with a few questions about the project. From there, if everything works out well, I'll get to work and you'll get to relax as I get all the writing you need out of the way. Take care and I look forward to working with you! ~Joel PS: How many freelancers do substandard work, taking the money and running? Too many. Way, way, way too many. I have personally met clients on this platform who have been privy to this. One of them showed me a book he assigned to a freelancer who charged them $1 (!!!) per word...to write with the competency of a junior high dropout. I cried for them that day. Well, guess what? That's not how I'll ever run MY shop. That's right. If you are not pleased with my work, you'll get your money back, no questions asked. -Questions and Answers- Q: Is your money-back guarantee indeed a money-back guarantee? A: Yes, as long as the contract is still active and as long as you let me know within 72 hours of paying me that you want the refund. Q: Is your turnaround time for 1000+ words really as short as twelve hours? A: It is, but we're talking just a first draft. But it typically doesn't take long for revisions. Even if revisions are thrown in, it would still only take roughly twelve hours for 1000+ words. If we're talking ghostwriting a book from an outline, scale that 1000+ to 10000+ since I can usually do something like a book at a much faster pace. Just remember that I need an outline for that much volume. Q: What are your rates? Are they negotiable? A: You should be able to see my hourly rate on my profile. As far as a per-word rate goes, I typically charge $50 to $75 per hour, or $.09 per word to $.25 per word, depending on how complicated the project is. Most of my rates are negotiable. However, I will never work for less than $15 per hour or $.05 per word. Q: Do you have editors? A: I edit all my work myself. However, I do sometimes outsource work to other writers whom I know and trust if I'm dealing with a lot of volume. I then edit what they have done. I'm totally transparent about this, too. Q: Do you also edit/proofread? A: I do! My first job on Upwork involved editing and proofreading. I am happy to take on such a job again. Q: I'm in school. Can you do my assignment for me? A: No. I WILL, however, assist you in whatever writing you need done to get INTO school, like a personal statement. Q: Can we work off of the platform? A: No.Line Editing
