I strive to create stories that tell images--and images that tell stories. I am both a writer and an artist, and narrative is central to my work! I believe the best stories show a character's transformation from one self into another. This process occurs when they confront something seemingly insurmountable and are forced--through courage or sheer misfortune--to face it head on. Through this encounter, they discover something unknown about themselves and their relationship to the greater world. So many projects, both published and unpublished, suffer from what I call "and then, and then, and then." The characters move through stages, one right after another, but nothing ever changes for them. There is no growth, no epiphany, no evolution. My greatest thrill is helping good writers become better writers by pointing out ways to disrupt their characters and shake their souls! MY CAREER: I am lucky to have created stories for some of the best ad agencies (Ogilvy & Mather, MSLGROUP), television networks (NatGeo, Discovery), and non-profits (March of Dimes, Asia Society) in the world. With the onset of the pandemic, I wanted more time to focus on my own work as a writer and illustrator, and I pulled away from full-time corporate work (I just finished my baby--my novel!). I love freelance projects because they allow me to work with lots of individual artists who are personally passionate about their projects--like me! I am a member of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and I am an official judge for the Florida Authors and Publishers Association. I am also a member of several wonderful writing groups here in South Florida. MY EDUCATION: I hold an MA in cultural anthropology from Cornell University (2007). My work focused on the dualities of identity with a focus on South Asia. I conducted three years of extensive fieldwork and language training in Nepal. I hold a BA in anthropology and sociology from Carleton College (2002) where I studied abroad in Vietnam and Mali. My senior thesis was awarded the prestigious James S. Berglund Prize for Social Sciences. Cultural anthropology has remained a consistent thread throughout my life, and as a result my own creative work is heavily driven by questions of identity and the dialectic between sameness and difference.
