I'm a professional publishing consultant, editor, and writing coach with years of experience in the publishing industry. To date, I've edited over one hundred manuscripts. When working with you, my mission is to be your go-to collaborator for your project by remaining highly focused on your needs and by providing high-quality deliverables tailored to your project's goals. We can begin working together at any stage of your publishing journey as my skills and services include writing coaching, beta reading, editorial assessments, developmental editing, copyediting, proofreading, and publishing consulting. Having worked at two university presses, I have experience with manuscripts of all types including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, business, and education. As a freelancer, I've also worked with fantasy, romance, crime fiction, and other commercial genres. I also have a BFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Management in the Creative Economy. As your editor, I'm dedicated to helping you develop high-quality content that meets all of your goals. I understand the effort that goes into your writing and your desire for your content to be the very best it can be. Therefore, my deliverables include not only the edited manuscript but also edit reports and collaborative revision hours that are all focused on elevating your manuscript. As your publishing consultant, I can guide you through the digital and print publishing process to deliver your content successfully, all while building your author or company brand. Together, we'll navigate your project through the independent, hybrid, or traditional publishing landscapes. I can develop a strong publishing strategy for your content and aid with project management for various steps of the process—from performing market research to executing sales strategies. As your writing coach, I can guide you through the writing process by providing exercises and techniques. I can identify the weaknesses and strengths of your writing and then provide solutions for how to eliminate those weak points and enhance your strengths. My goal is to be someone you can bounce your writing ideas off of and someone who supports and challenges you as a writer. If you're interested in working with me or have any questions, just send me a message telling me about your project and we'll go from there! Types of editing: Developmental Editing A developmental edit focuses on the big-picture elements of your content such as plot, character development, pacing, narrative, etc. For nonfiction books, it focuses on the structure of your content, what objectives need to be met by each section, delivery, etc. If your content is completed but hasn't undergone any revision yet, a developmental edit is where you want to start. When doing a developmental edit of your work, I provide you with a commented manuscript that highlights every suggested revision, edit report(s) with detailed explanations of issues and proposed solutions, and collaborative revision hours to discuss the edits. Line Editing Line editing is a high-level edit that focuses on the language, tone, pace, descriptions, voice, and writing style throughout the manuscript. A line edit includes a mix of direct edits and recommendations for additional content or cuts. When doing a line edit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Copyediting A copyedit focuses on the readability of your content by correcting for grammar, inconsistencies, awkward phrasing, sentence structure, repetitions, etc. When doing a copyedit of your work, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style). Proofreading Proofreading focuses on correcting typos, spelling, punctuation, and other small errors. This is the last phase of editing. When proofreading your content, I provide you with an edited version (using MS Word track changes so you can review the edits) and a style sheet for the specific terminology used in your work (adhering to the Chicago Manual of Style).

"Megan does great work - in addition to being a superb editor and working with us like partner on our project, she is punctual, thorough, and has great communication." — Client feedback on Bible study project My goal as a copy editor and proofreader is to make sure the ideas in your book are clear and easy to read so you are confident about sharing it with the world. I will ensure your text remains in your voice and style while refining your content and removing any errors that might distract your readers from the encouragement or information you want to give them. While I enjoy working on a variety of texts, I specialize in Christian books, including memoirs, educational books, novels, and a devotional. Secular books I have edited include mystery, sci-fi, and adventure novels; picture books; and self-help titles. I have experience helping many new authors to reach their publishing goals. I will communicate with you in a clear, friendly, and encouraging way. I will make corrections and give you honest feedback, but you will make the final decisions on your work. I can also write your book description or help you craft one that will attract readers by giving them a taste of what your book offers. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English, and I worked as a copy editor at a daily newspaper for three years. While I have no formal Bible training, I do have a good layman’s knowledge of the Bible from my personal reading and participating in and leading studies. I am trained in Associated Press (AP) style. I also have the Chicago Manual of Style (18th edition) and the Christian Writer's Manual of Style (4th edition) as additional references. I am a vetted member of the Christian Editor Connection. PREFERRED PROJECTS Currently, I am only taking on new projects that are books. I am most interested in working on novels and Christian books, but I can help you polish any book and work toward your publishing goals. I am happy to work with authors or publishing companies.

The top skills I can offer you are high-quality content writing, light editing, and proofreading blended with plant information research and plant identification if needed. My work is 100% original, and I will always return your work to you in the agreed-upon time frame. The journey started with a B.A. in Biology and an M.S. in Horticulture and Communications. From there I proofread at Cornell University, wrote and edited chapters of gardening books at Rodale Press, and edited a wildflower trail guide for a Pennsylvania park. A proofreading course in 2018 further honed my skills. Currently, I am successfully writing plant and gardening-related articles and blogs and proofreading on an ongoing basis. Clients have consistently been happy with my work.

I am a highly detail-oriented meticulous perfectionist with the goal of accuracy in everything. A native US English speaker, I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English. My aim in every job is to exceed expectations. “Marilyn was everything we were looking for and a lot more. We've worked with a number of editors and she tops the list. We've already referred her to others and will use her again.” "Marilyn is the best editor I've ever hired. She caught more errors than my first several editors combined. She made 1,560 revisions. Incredible! She's worth every penny." “I've had quite a few people do editing and you're the only one that I trust to do the job right and do it quickly.” "Great work! Am I ever glad we found you!" Top skills in academic, business, fiction, and nonfiction for proofreading, editing, and formatting: Please note that I am a very detailed editor, and I don't usually accept unreasonable rush jobs. If in doubt, please ask though. I thrive on finding mistakes in grammar, spelling, context, syntax, redundancies, repetitions, punctuation, and in facts. The Chicago Manual of Style and APA are home for me, and Webster's Unabridged is my main daily haunt. I also work in MLA, GPO, Vancouver, Harvard, AMA, and AP as well. I love digging into research, too. Academics are my first love, but I am just as comfortable working with businesses and helping authors with their prose. I enjoy coaching and explaining why I am suggesting changes, so there can be growth on the author's part if so desired. It's not about the money—it's about the game! I like the challenge of finding as many errors as possible. I like the challenge of making you look your best. This is why I prefer flat rate to hourly. With a flat fee, the work can be developed without worry. It can be delivered with pride. Because my job is to make your work look good, in most cases, I can't do that while rushing. So unless a rush job is timed appropriately for the level of detailed editing that I do, I can't accommodate rush jobs. Feel free to ask though. It never hurts to ask. There are periods of downtime occasionally. And I like to give back to the community. So, if there isn't a lot of money to work with, please inquire. It never hurts to ask, and if I do have the time, I may be able to help. If you do, please mention that you read my review and would like help on the pricing. To learn about my editing process, ask me for my bio.

Are you looking for guidance and support that demands more than Artificial Intelligence? I invite you to work with me if you're interested in using your Real Intelligence to produce authentic and original work. In my role as an academic editor and coach, I satisfy the needs of two kinds of client: 1. PhD and Master's degree students who need support in completing their thesis or dissertation; 2. Researchers who need assistance in preparing their journal articles and reports for publication. Although there are many similarities in the work, since both require a strong knowledge of academic writing, understanding of scholarly standards, and commitment to excellence and rigor, there are some differences as outlined below. 1. PhD or Master's Students Completing a PhD or Master’s degree is difficult enough at the best of times. So, as well as editing manuscripts to meet the university's expectations, I also specialize in working with graduate students who have run into extra challenges along the way. I can help if you’re: • Lost and stuck because you don’t understand what your supervisor wants • Unclear about how to improve the structure or narrative flow of your thesis or dissertation • Not sure how to write a Literature Review • Conducting a specialized technical or medical Systematic Literature Review • Confused about why you need a Theoretical Framework (and what is that anyway??) • Wondering what to put into your Introduction, or Conclusion • Mixing up your Methodology with your Findings and Discussion • Recovering from an illness or a personal loss and need help re-engaging with your studies • Still at the proposal stage and trying to understand what's needed for a PhD or Master's If you want specific proofreading and editing services, I can improve and polish your drafts In particular, I can help with: • Academic English, including correct spelling, grammar and punctuation • Using narrative citations as well as parenthetical citations to make the message clearer • Complying with your university’s style guide (e.g., APA7, Chicago, Harvard, etc.) • Structuring your chapters, and ensuring there is narrative flow • Making sure that you’re writing a thesis or dissertation, not a book full of your opinions • Improving your AI-generated drafts to ensure authenticity and a voice that's your own. 2. Researchers and Report Writers If you are an individual researchers, or a member of a research team, and are subject matter experts who need to present their findings to meet the highest standards. I can assist by: • Proofreading to improve the English so that the research is clearly explained • Editing documents to follow academic protocols for format and structure • Applying the style guide preferences (APA, Chicago, AMA, etc.) of particular scholarly journals • Ensuring that reports or proposals are written to suit the readership • Checking that articles and reports have the expected sections and subsections • Verifying that proposals to government agencies are comprehensive. Whether you are a student, a researcher or a faculty member, I invite you to find out more in a free 10-minute introductory Zoom Call. Ask questions, tell me more about your study, find out how I can help. Please check the positive feedback from my many satisfied clients, and then get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you. Welcome to my profile! For as long as you stay, I hope you enjoy your time! Your number one question should be whether or not you need my services. My number one question is have you finished your manuscript? If you can answer yes to that question, then you’re in need of a book expert—someone who is capable of editing your manuscript for: ❖ Content (flow, character development, plot development, etc.); ❖ Grammar (noun-verb agreement, danglers, tense, word usage, etc.); ❖ Spelling (is it their, there, or they're?); ❖ Punctuation (does that comma go there, is that the proper formatting for an ellipsis?); ❖ Proper capitalization of terms (Government or government?); ❖ Proper treatment of numbers (101 or one hundred and one?); ❖ Proper formatting of foreign terms (avec vous?); ❖ Quotations and dialogue formatting (single quotations for a quote inside of character speech or double?); ❖ Reference formatting and fact checking; and ❖ So many other editing errors I’ve come across in my eleven years of editing for authors. However, I’m not just an editor. I’m capable of formatting the interior of your manuscript for electronic publication and paperback publication for the following platforms: ❖ Amazon KDP ❖ Barnes & Noble's Nook ❖ Kobo ❖ Smashwords ❖ Lulu ❖ BookBaby If you are thinking of publishing on a different platform, I’m a quick learner. Honestly, there are a few things to tweak here and there to make a document compatible on a different platform. Just ask, and I’ll let you know if I can work my magic. Interested in my specs? I’ve professionally content edited, line edited, copyedited, proofread, and formatted manuscripts for self-publication, submission to literary agents, and submission to publishers for the past eleven years working with a myriad of different genres. I’m always looking to learn something new. When I’m not editing, I’m rereading the Chicago Manual of Style—currently in its eighteenth edition—or taking continuing education courses via the Editorial Freelancer’s Association and online college courses. I believe in continuously learning, and editing is an ever-changing field. If you haven’t guessed, I focus specifically on the Chicago Manual of Style, the most commonly accepted and preferred style for literary agents, publishers, and review publications (the New York Times). I have worked for self-publishers, boutique publishers, content creation services, medium publishers, and literary agents. I keep my prices at the lower spectrum for editing and formatting as I believe every book deserves the chance to shine. Please ask me about my: ❖ Editor's Letters (Developmental, Line, and Copyediting) ❖ Style Guides Both are included with the price of my bid for your project. I know that was a lot to take in, and you undoubtedly have questions for me. Please feel free to send me a message at any time with your questions, and I will respond as soon as humanly possible.

Have you written a novel or short story and are unsure if the story is complete? What about your characters--are they fully developed? Will your conflicts keep the tension high and keep your readers turning pages? If you're not sure, let's talk about a developmental edit. Have you written a nonfiction book or article but are unsure if the whole thing makes sense from start to finish? Are your ideas fully fleshed out, or are there gaps that your readers may fall into? Let's talk about your content and your organization. Have you written something--book-length or not, fiction or nonfiction--and you're confident about the big-picture elements but you're not sure if your writing style is strong enough for publication yet? Do you think your work could use some help at the sentence and paragraph level? Let's talk about a line edit. Are you "this close" to publication but you want another set of eyes on your work, just to ensure there are no typos, grammar mistakes, or missing words? Let's talk about proofreading. Since 2011, I've been helping my clients polish their writing, and I'd love to talk to you about yours. Prior to freelancing, I taught high school and middle school English and spent many years as a newspaper reporter and editor. I've got the experience and the education to help you. I know grammar rules backwards and forwards, as well as both the Chicago Manual of Style and AP style, and I have no problem meeting deadlines. Your manuscript, paper, article, or email will shine when I'm finished with it. I welcome your questions and am looking forward to learning more about your project!

As a hardworking student, I have gained important skills that have made professional editing and proofreading an excellent fit for me. As an undergraduate, I improved my organizational skills and developed my writing abilities, along with gaining exposure to a wide variety of subjects. In my work as a graduate professorial assistant, I searched for minuscule errors (e.g. correct accents) in countless Greek exams, which maximized my experience in identifying minute mistakes. After graduating, I took Caitlin Pyle's unique Proofread Anywhere course. This intensive proofreading course reinforced my grammatical and editorial knowledge and gave me the tools to be a successful professional in this field. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with a plethora of clients on a wide range of projects. I have worked on anything from marketing emails to books (both fiction and nonfiction), from academic journal articles to blog posts. No project is too small or too large, too casual or too technical. Every project is important to me and receives my careful attention.

I offer adaptable editing, where I start by learning what the author's goals are including the intention of the writing as well as the desired readership. From there we work together to make your document the best version of itself. I work Monday to Friday (PST) and pride myself on being responsive and meeting deadlines. Returning clients love that I coach writers (at their request) to grow and therefore need less editing. I am interested in plain language editing, trauma-informed editing, and decolonizing editing and work to grow in these areas. I offer services in proofreading, copyediting (with optional line editing), and developmental editing. I'll also offer manuscript or chapter critiques. I have 20+ years of professional experience in the writing and editing industry. My education includes: MA in Creative Writing, Grad. Cert. in Instructional Design, BA in English, BAJ (Journalism), a Professional Editing Standards Certificate. I'm a member of Editor's Canada and CIEP (UK) and am familiar with common style guides (CMoS, CP, AP, APA, MLA). “(Shara) understands style sheets; excellent vocabulary, sense of idiom; catches nearly every subtle error – the ones that only the best candidates do.
