Licensed Civil Engineer (PE), CAD Technician Civil Engineering is my main service. This includes civil site design and planning (residential, commercial sites, municipal, new developments). I also perform a variety of services with storm water management erosion control plans, stormwater management plans, storm water modeling, flood analysis, and watershed determination. I also can assist with CAD drafting projects, HydroCAD modeling, and building permits. I have worked on more than 100+ projects throughout the United States in my career. Most of these projects being located in MN, SD, TX, and GA. I am currently working as an Licensed Civil Engineer on residential, commercial, and industrial sites with 6 years of experience. I am mostly familiar with AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, HydroCAD, and Trimble Business Center software. As far as my work in Civil 3D goes. I am very familiar with the standard tools and features in C3D (Topo Points, Surfaces, Feature Lines, Alignments, Corridors and Profiles, Pipe Neworks). A typical project workflow for me involves: meeting with the client and discussing the project. Starting with a simple site plan to get an idea of what we are looking at, and from there using existing conditions/surveys to complete the design (site, grading, drainage, utility, and storm water management plans). I generally like to meet with clients on a weekly or as needed basis to coordinate changes and answer questions. MY Services : -Site plan and layout -Site design and plan creation (Site, Grading, Utility, Drainage, Plan and Profile, SWPPP, etc) -ProjectTake-Ofsf & Quantity Estimation -Trimble Business Center takeoffs and site models -CAD Drafting, -2D Floor Plan (Building Permits) -Storm water management (SWPPPs, Storm water modeling reports, flood analysis) -Wastewater treatment plant design -Re-Checking Existing Construction and Prepared Detailed Report For Stability & Safety. -GIS-Remote Sensing, Google Earth -Foundation Design, I have included several examples of my work on my profile (which was done for the company I currently work for), but if you are looking for a specific type of project or want things to look different please reach out to discuss and I can provide more examples if needed. Thanks for your time.

I help U.S. land surveyors, civil engineers, and land development firms turn raw field data into buildable Civil 3D and Carlson Survey deliverables. With 10+ years of experience in both surveying and land development, I bridge the gap between field data, design intent, and construction-ready plans. ✅ Site Grading Plans — I translate your raw topographic data into buildable grading plans that contractors can follow without confusion. No ambiguous slopes. No drainage guesswork. ✅ Drainage Design — Stormwater going where it shouldn't? I design drainage plans that protect your site, meet code, and keep inspectors happy. ✅ Survey Works — From boundary surveys to topographic mapping, I provide accurate field data and drafting that becomes the foundation every good design is built on. ✅ PDF to CAD Conversion — Got old paper plans, scanned drawings, or PDF files that need to live in AutoCAD or Civil 3D? I've done this for more than 10 years. I don't just trace lines. I rebuild your drawings with correct layers, scales, and standards so they're actually usable. Why clients keep coming back: → I read plans the way engineers and contractors do — so I catch problems before they become change orders. → I deliver clean, organized CAD files. Not a mess of unorganized layers you have to fix yourself. → I communicate clearly and hit deadlines. No excuses, no ghost-mode. If you need accurate, professional civil engineering drafting and survey support without babysitting a freelancer, let's talk. Send me your project details. I'll tell you exactly how I can help.

Civil engineer hiring guide

Civil engineers play a critical role in shaping the built environment, from bridges and highways to water systems and commercial buildings. Hiring a freelance civil engineer gives businesses access to specialized expertise for structural design, site development, and regulatory compliance without the overhead of a full-time hire. Whether you need feasibility studies, construction oversight, or environmental assessments, a skilled civil engineer helps ensure your project meets safety standards while staying on schedule and within budget.

What does a civil engineer do?

Civil engineering applies science to construct roads, buildings, and other structures. Civil engineers use CAD programs to draft blueprints and perform geological surveys and finite element analyses (FEAs).

Civil engineers are involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects. They may specialize in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or environmental engineering. Using advanced software like AutoCAD and Revit, they create detailed plans and perform complex calculations to ensure the safety, efficiency, and functionality of structures and systems. Their work involves project management, cost estimation, and collaboration with other engineering professionals.

Freelance civil engineers often work on:

  • Structural design for commercial and residential buildings

  • Bridge and highway design and rehabilitation

  • Water resource management systems

  • Environmental impact assessments

  • Site development and land planning

  • Seismic analysis and retrofitting

  • Sustainable infrastructure design

  • Construction project management and oversight

Freelance civil engineers are engaged at every stage of a project's development. Tasks they handle include developing engineering drawings, performing structural analysis, creating technical specifications, and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.

FAQs about civil engineers

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring a freelance civil engineer worth it?

For many businesses and property owners, hiring a freelance civil engineer is a cost-effective way to access specialized expertise without committing to a full-time salary. A freelance civil engineer can handle targeted project needs — such as structural analysis, permit documentation, or site development plans — so you pay only for the work required. Since construction is a highly regulated industry, a civil engineer can help navigate local and broader regulator requirements.

However, for very large or long-term projects that require daily on-site oversight, a full-time hire or engineering firm may be more practical.

What qualifications should a freelance civil engineer have?

A qualified freelance civil engineer should hold at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field. Many clients also require a Professional Engineer (PE) license, which indicates the engineer has met rigorous education, experience, and examination standards. Depending on your project, certifications like LEED accreditation for sustainable design or specialized knowledge in geotechnical or structural engineering may also be valuable. Proficiency in industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Civil 3D is important to verify as well.

What’s the difference between a civil engineer and a structural engineer?

Structural engineering is a subdiscipline of civil engineering. While civil engineers work across a broad range of infrastructure projects — including roads, water systems, and site development — structural engineers focus specifically on the design and integrity of load-bearing structures like buildings, bridges, and foundations. If your project primarily involves ensuring a structure can safely support its intended loads, a structural engineer may be the better fit. For broader infrastructure planning, environmental assessments, or site development work, a generalist civil engineer is typically the right choice.
