A social, behavioural and health sciences researcher with a background in psychology and over 16 years of experience, including 10 post-PhD, for longest at the University of Cambridge. My current role blends working on research projects, writing/ editing projects, and psychotherapy/ counselling/ coaching work. I am also a published author ("House Moving Therapy" - a book on using the physical clutter you confront during a house move to sort through the emotional mess that lies behind it as well as a book on the quest for one's true home). Degrees in psychology (BA, MA in Clinical and Counselling Psychology, MA in Work and Organizational Psychology), philosophy (MA in Philosophy and Ethics of Mental Health, PhD in the Philosophy of Science) and English language and literature (minor). My most recent long-term research projects have been with the World Health Organization (editor of a special collection of peer-reviewed articles on the lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic), with Acas, the UK Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, which deals with workplace relationships and conflict (analysis of public consultations on flexible working and predictable working), and with the Health Innovation Network (evaluation of an intra-organisational anti-racism project). My favourite research topics and contexts are complex, dynamic, messy, chaotic, dramatic ... I am committed to doing research which brings meaning, clarity and hope where they are most difficult to find and sustain. I've worked in digital health; global and humanitarian health; health systems recovery and resilience; palliative and end of life care; research ethics; military veterans' health; workplace well-being; organizational transformation; evidence synthesis and knowledge management ... I also do independent research on relationships, love, break-ups and conflict resolution, but this is still in book drafts which are a work in progress! I'm also infinitely curious and interested in engaging with new topics in the social, behavioural and health sciences, so do get in touch if some of my work is of interest but you don't see your topic! I am committed to writing up research and enabling others to write theirs in clear, accessible and engaging way. My 10 key papers have been downloaded, as full texts, over 84,000 times. Methodologically, I work with: qualitative approaches (interviews, focus groups, ethnographic work); quantitative methods and sources of data (surveys, audits of routinely collected administrative data); pictorial and other arts-based approaches; textual analysis methods; mixed methods research; theory-based approaches (e.g. realist evaluation and synthesis, ethical analysis, etc.); secondary research, etc. My PhD was on methods of research synthesis, of which the systematic review is an exemplar case. I have also developed a rich personal arsenal of what I call ‘rigorous shortcuts’ or ‘shortcuts to rigour’ – tools that enable maximum rigour when we don’t have the time or resources for the ideal study design. My work as a psychologist/ counsellor draws both on my research studies and lived experience. I have been trained in the psychodynamic tradition, with specialisations in psychodrama and arts therapy. I often suggest writing exercises and other forms of creative endeavours as a path to awareness and healing. I listen with the whole of my being but also engage in dynamic conversation with clients in which I may challenge and push them and also share my own experiences. As a psychologist who is also a researcher and critical thinker, I often end up doing hardcore uncomfortable thinking and digging for truths with my clients when the standard psychological advice and approaches just won't cut through the existential fog we are trying to lift together. I'd love to discuss your research, writing/ editing or psychotherapy/ counselling needs with you! Even if I'm not your person, I'll be keen to help you specify what you are after and offer suggestions on where to find it.Educational Writers

Having served as a professional editor and writer for more than ten years now, working with both fiction and nonfiction, my passion revolves around helping authors and publishers find the full potential of their manuscripts. My work is loosely split between working with indie authors and publishers, and so I also do work on blurbs, synopses, and queries, but only for works that I've edited or been directly involved in as a writing coach/consultant. In all tasks, though, I have an excellent eye for detail, and with my extended background as a writer and teacher, I can be depended upon to offer professional guidance at every turn, eliminate errors and inconsistencies, and meet all deadlines. By turns, I work as a writing coach, editor, and ghostwriter, matching my talents to my clients' needs. In each of these roles, I only take on projects that suit my skills--so, if you ask me to edit or write in a genre where I have no experience, I'll be the first to tell you I'm not your ideal fit. But, when I do take on a project, you can be sure that it will become a top priority and receive the attention and skill it deserves. When it comes to nonfiction, I'm got a varied background that crosses a variety of disciplines and types of writing. I've edited and copyedited a number of dissertations and academic articles within the humanities and sciences, and I've developed a close familiarity with details of grammar and citation styles (as I've worked as both a freelance copyeditor and as the assistant director of a university-level writing center). That said, academic work is no longer my focus, and you'll more often find me working on memoirs, self-help and business books, books related to health and wellness, and books that have some intersection with social justice, science/nature, current events, or culture. I've also worked on a number of books related to travel and history, as well as philosophy. In fiction, I have experience in various genres, including (but not limited to): science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, horror, suspense/thrillers, mystery, romance (of various subgenres, but especially paranormal, suspense, billionaire, dark, and contemporary), historical fiction, and literary fiction. My experience focuses on adult and YA material--I'm not the best fit for middle grade or children's books. Regarding editing, specifically: I've been freelancing on a full-time basis since August of 2014, and I love keeping an eclectic calendar so that I always have a fresh eye for each new manuscript. I track all work via Word's Track Changes feature, using the comments feature for feedback as needed. In terms of writing, I hire out as a fixer just as often as a writer--this means that I work through a complete novel, elevating the writing and 'fixing' issues that come up in relation to the story, character, pacing, genre, etc. Essentially, hiring me as a 'fixer' means that you've got a complete draft, and it's in decent shape, but you know it needs work and want it to reach the next level without your being directly involved in the revision. Many of my 'fixing' jobs come to me because an author needs to adjust word count up or down significantly, but is at a loss for how to do so without detracting from a project's quality or bringing in outside help. With nonfiction, I need to be 100% sure that I'm the right fit for a project before taking it on, so engaging in a detailed conversation ahead of hiring is always a must. My work in ghostwriting fiction has been focused around paranormals, suspense, romance, horror, SFF, and nonfiction, and I only hire out as a ghostwriter for adult work (vs YA). Lastly, I often serve as a writing coach, helping authors complete their first full manuscript or finish a project that's been languishing on their desktop for years. I take an immense amount of pride in my track record for helping first-time writers succeed as writers, and limit the number of coaching clients I take on at any given time in order to make sure I'm available on short-notice for meetings, crises, and content reviews/edits. This process looks different for every client and project, as I tailor my approach to each individual and job, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how it might best work for you.Educational Writers

As an award-winning educator for over three decades, I’ve designed curriculum, edited and graded student work at many levels, and created course content for a wide variety of subject areas. Now, you can tap into my expertise to make these tasks easier for yourself. Here are some examples of ways I can help you: • Education: If you’ve got a text and need to have a quiz, homework assignment, or exam based on it, I can prepare both the assignment and the key or grading rubric to use in scoring it. If you’ve got a big set of exams to mark, I’m always eager to help give students feedback. If you’re using blog posts to support your teaching by providing additional material for your students, I can assist with content writing and designing interesting activities for the students to do to engage with the material. If you are focusing on cross-curricular projects, I can suggest ways to integrate learners’ skills and tie together disparate ideas into comprehensive plans. • Editing: Having taught everything from middle school English to adult basic education to music to university-level ESL/EFL and much, much more, I can edit work at nearly any level. Whether you’re writing a journal article for professional publication or a set of worksheets for high schoolers, I can help strengthen your finished work without losing your personal voice. • Proofreading: Sometimes, you’ve got a piece of writing that absolutely, positively has to be 100% perfect. An extra pair of eyes and a skilled copywriter can be invaluable. I’m great at finding those nitpicky details that shift a grant proposal, a Master’s thesis, a doctoral dissertation, or portfolio elements from good to excellent. These are aspects of my work you can count on: • On-time, punctual delivery with meticulous attention to deadlines • Fast turn-around • Zero plagiarism—Anyone else’s work referred to will be fully credited and properly cited. • Balance of deep understand of writing conventions with fresh ideas and creative approaches • Tremendous sensitivity to cultural context—I’ve lived and worked in eight countries on five continents and I’ve taught students from across the globe! • Cheerful, patient interactions with a positive attitude I am eager to help your learners and to support you in your education and teaching. I am an accomplished resume writer, developmental editor, copyeditor, and proofreader with a proven track record. My resume clients are consistently discovered by recruiters and hiring managers and are invited to job interviews. Furthermore, my editing clients have published in literary, academic, and trade publications in addition to signing with literary agents and publishing their books both traditionally and independently. I've also edited personal statements and application essays that have resulted in my clients being admitted to law school, medical school, dental school, and more. I have a versatile skill set. I write professional resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles designed to be compatible with employer Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). I also offer assessments and professional critiques of literary fiction and nonfiction with tangible suggestions for revision. In addition, I help writers to develop and refine their work at any stage of the writing process by editing and proofing manuscripts, articles, marketing materials, annual reports, dissertations, and everything in between for clarity and coherence. Finally, I write blog and social media posts, cover letters, scholarly articles, journalistic pieces, web content, and creative pieces. I have edited creative work by Robert Vivian, Philip Dacey, Mariko Nagai, Andria Williams, Simon Perchik, Joyce Dyer, Karl Elder, and James Grabill, among others, and I have also interviewed New York Times best-selling author Chad Harbach (author of The Art of Fielding). I am an Ivy-league trained English Professor with over 20 years of experience in academic writing and publishing. A published writer myself, I have helped a range of writers, from first-year composition students to seasoned professionals. I have been a reader and on the editorial boards of several academic journals, read admissions essays (graduate and undergraduate) and judge writing contests. I have also served as a department chair and on my former college's appointment, promotion and tenure committee. I have a particular expertise and passion for working with graduate students. See below for more information about my services as a thesis and dissertation coach and editor. (Interested in applying for graduate school or for fellowships? See my specialized profile). As a developmental editor and writing coach, my goal is to help get your writing into the world regardless of where you are at in the process: whether you already have a manuscript and a contract from a press or simply a rough idea of something you'd like to write. As a writing coach, I will meet you where you are and help you with any and every stage of the writing process--from the brainstorming and planning stages to the writing, revising and final editing to responding to reader reports and reviews and securing publication. I am a fast and careful proofreader and line editor, proficient in a number of citation styles, including MLA, Chicago, Oxford m, Harvard and APA, and able to carefully follow the publishing guidelines of the press you are working with. I am also conversant in a number of national Englishes. However, my true passion and skills lie in helping writers bring their projects to fruition. I am particularly good at taking a very rough, rough draft--or even a rough idea--and helping a writer massage it into a compelling and well-structured narrative. I am also quite good at helping writers who find themselves "stuck" in a particular project and need help crafting a plan to move forward. I offer a 10% discount to those who are the first in their families to go to college and to adjunct professors. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to have a brief, no obligation conversation so I can learn more about your project and how I might help. THESIS AND DISSERTATION EDITOR AND WRITING COACH Writing a dissertation is hard, I know! I wrote one myself and, as an English professor for over 20 years, I have helped shepherd many students through the process. Unfortunately, not every graduate program provides their students with the kind of guidance and structure that most of us need for taking on a project of this size. That is where I come in. I taught graduate level writing for many years and have supported graduate students working in a variety of fields, including the social sciences, humanities, technology, business and finance, computer science and education. I am knowledgeable in a number of citation styles, including MLA, Chicago, APA, Harvard and Oxford, and am a careful and efficient editor. However, my talents really lie in helping clients with larger holistic issues, including argument development, organization and structure, and responding to reader feedback. I’m also especially good at helping writers who get stuck in a project or are suffering from writer’s block. My mantra is that a done dissertation is the best dissertation! As with all my clients, I offer a 10 percent discount for first-generation college students. I’d be happy to have a 30 minute no-obligation conversation with you to hear about your project and how I can help.Educational Writers
