I. EDITING/WRITING, academic and technical II. QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS in R & MS Excel III. TIPS FOR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS I. EDITING/WRITING I combine graduate-level mathematical knowledge with excellent writing skills. Prior to earning a Ph.D. in Decision Sciences and an MBA, I was awarded graduate and undergraduate degrees in English literature and worked as an editor of technical materials. I specialize in academic writing/editing, particularly for quantitative subjects, and am a published author in peer-reviewed journals. I can and have edited many types of documents: policies and procedures, theses and dissertations (many for ESL students), white papers, reports, papers targeted at academic journals. Books I've edited that are currently for sale on Amazon include the following: Mike Barrett, "SAT Math 2 Prep Black Book" Phil Champagne, "The Book of Satoshi: The Collected Writings of Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto" Mukesh Prasad, "From Light to Eternity" Ronald J. Ryan, "The U.S. Pension Crisis" Jon Warner, Business Optimization: A Simple and Effective Approach for Achieving Ongoing Business Success D. K. Willardson, "Quantitative Hitting: Surprising Discoveries of the Game’s Best Hitters" Anna Wozniak, "The Demon That Occupied Wall Street: How Social Thinkers Deceived Human Mind" My Editing Methodology: If you are seeking someone to edit your 30,000-word thesis in 2 hours for $40, please look elsewhere. A typical edit for me is as follows: 1) A paragraph-level read that usually proceeds at a rate of about 1,000 words/hour. Here I correct/modify grammar, spelling, and some formatting. This rate may be much lower for exacting editing such as papers targeted at academic journals and personal statements written in support of job applications. 2) A higher level reading to not only catch anything I missed in my first reading but also to check the document for flow, clarity, and internal consistency. 3) A spelling and grammar check through MS Word. 4) A final look for orphan headings or anything else that could have gone wrong. I am expert in MS Word and can style headings and tables, figures, and equations so that Word can generate a table of contents and lists of tables, figures, and equations, respectively. I can style headings according to a particular format (i.e., APA 7th ed.). For mathematical or statistical material, I can generate graphics through either R's basic plotting functions or the ggplot2 package or through MS Excel. I am an intermediate user of LaTeX (Overleaf) and rMarkdow A further service is reference citation and bibliography. I prefer to use a source-management software such as EndNote or Mendeley, which will generate a bibliography automatically. If you should have any questions concerning your particular document, please do not hesitate to ask. I offer small, complimentary sample edits. Lastly, I do not do homework or work for students, although I do provide advice within the limits of editing work--pointing out what I see as flaws or gaps in logic of a document I'm editing. Aside from its being academically dishonest, it places a great deal of responsibility on me. What if I were to do the work and then the work earned an F? I appreciate your understanding with respect to this. II. QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS I am proficient in R and C++. I've had extensive classroom and work experience performing various types of quantitative analyses and currently use R and MS Excel for analysis. I'm particularly adept at logistic regression. III. TIPS FOR PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS 1. Upon payment of their monthly fee to Upwork, freelancers are given 100 connects with which to apply for jobs. In the past, jobs typically cost 3-5 connects to apply for. However, the cost in connects has been increasing over the last couple of years, and the latest I've seen is 31 connects! Based on this, a freelancer would only be able to apply for 3 jobs per month without purchasing additional connects. A job poster who charges, for instance, 31 connects for a job that will pay a fixed price of only $15 (of which the freelancer will only receive 85% or $12.75) may not get much attention, particularly from well-qualified freelancers. One possibility is to issue invitations to qualified freelancers, who will then pay nothing in connects to apply for your job. I konw that I am not applying for jobs I would have in the past because of their excessive cost. Therefore, you are missing out on qualified freelancers due to connect inflation. 2. Give complete details on your job--whether it's editing a fiction or nonfiction book, for instance. 3. If you are seeking to hire a new freelancer but have already hired someone that did not work out. your job description will show that you've hired someone. As a consequence, a freelancer may not risk spending connects to apply for your job, thinking it's already been filled. THEREFORE, MAKE CLEAR THAT YOU ARE SEEKING A NEW HIRE IN YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION.

I'm a retired academic with 30 years' experience in life-science research, education and publishing. So I understand your problem, as I've spent decades helping people just like YOU. Here’s how I can help with your scientific or medical project: –Literature searches, systematic reviews and meta-analyses –Experimental design and sample size estimation –Descriptive statistics and data visualization –Advanced multivariate modeling and hypothesis testing –Technical illustrations, graphical abstracts and flowcharts –Content editing for theses, articles, grants, fellowship applications and full-length books –Copy editing for grammar, logic, brevity, flow and adherence to academic citation styles –Fact-checking sources to root out false claims and hallucinated references –General coaching, strategizing and career development for life-science researchers at any career stage, whether you are a prospective graduate student, PhD candidate, postdoc or tenured faculty member. Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time. I can start from scratch or work with YOUR existing materials. I’m skilled with tools like PubMed, EndNote, Zotero, LaTeX, Prism, R Studio, Photoshop and Illustrator. For more advanced bioinformatics tasks, I use Expasy, GEO, NCBI, UniProt, and genome browsers like Ensembl and UCSC. As my postdoc advisor once said, "You can explain it to 100 people one at a time, or you can write a great set of instructions." So if you need a manual, protocol, or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), I can help with that too. Using my deep experience writing clear instructions for labs and classrooms, I can cover every topic: experimental workflow, equipment maintenance, how-to guides or whatever might be your critical need. A little more about ME: I have a BA from Yale and a PhD from the University of Chicago. I led an NIH-funded research lab for 23 years and published 25+ peer-reviewed journal articles. I’ve reviewed over 50 scientific manuscripts and scored grants for the NIH, NSF, and DOD. As a full Professor I taught cell biology, histology, human development, ecology/evolution, epidemiology and statistics at university. In 2024 I semi-retired by starting my own scientific consulting company, offering fractional services to principal investigators, healthcare providers, biotech startups, scientific societies, health- and environment-focused non-profits, and independent entrepreneurs. And let's end with US. Because together, we might be unstoppable.
