Professor Jairos Kangira is a full professor of English at the University of Namibia. He has successfully supervised many students at doctoral and master’s level in English. Born and bred on a farm owned by a white man in the Midlands Province, Zimbabwe, where his parents worked, Kangira’s trajectory in academia can simply be described as ‘against all odds’, and ‘not born with a silver spoon in the mouth’. Because there was no school on the farm, young Kangira spent most of his youth staying with relatives in areas that had schools, far away from his parents. Armed with a Certificate in Education after high school, Kangira worked as a secondary school teacher for many years, at the same time studying with the University of South Africa through the distance education mode. The Bachelor of Arts form Unisa opened doors for the honours and master’s degree from the University of Zimbabwe where he was hired as teaching assistant because of his outstanding performance. He then earned a PhD in Rhetoric Studies from the prestigious University of Cape Town, becoming one of the few people to graduate with this qualification in Southern Africa. Following the mantra ‘once a teacher, always a teacher’, Kangira found himself at the H. L. Martin Institute of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne where he graduated with a Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Education Management and a Master’s degree in Tertiary Education Management. His career in higher education has seen him travelling to higher education institutions across the world where he has been honoured by some of these institutions. He has been awarded Honorary Professorship by the Department of Modern Languages at Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom. He is a member of the 14 th Council of the National University of Lesotho. He is an external examiner of doctoral theses at many universities. Kangira is the former Dean of the former Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Namibia. He is a regular columnist in the New Era newspaper focusing on issues in higher education. He is founding editor of three peer-reviewed journals in Namibia.
