I fly helicopters, work as an electrical engineer, and have years of military experience behind me. But the work I genuinely enjoy is something quieter: taking technical documents in English and turning them into Turkish that actually makes sense to the person reading it. Aviation manuals, engineering specs, software interfaces — the format changes, but the goal stays the same. Translate the meaning, not just the words. My hands-on background with Turkish technical content goes back to my university years at Selçuk (2012–2016). I worked through summers and semester breaks selling test and measurement equipment, demonstrating it to customers, and training users on how to operate it. A big part of that job was reworking the English user manuals into Turkish that a technician could actually follow, then teaching from those translated guides. If the translation didn't work in practice, I'd hear about it from the trainees the same day. That's where I learned the difference between technically correct Turkish and Turkish that actually communicates. Alongside that, I was building things on my own — microcontroller projects, PCB designs from scratch. Real hardware, not coursework. Electronics teaches you to respect small details quickly, because one wrong trace or one cold solder joint and the whole board is dead. After graduation I spent about a year on weak current systems: security, fire alarms, data networks, technical drawing, schematic work. Roughly five years of solid technical groundwork before I moved into aviation full-time. The project I'm most proud of is the full Turkish localization of the AirNavigation Pro app. Every button, error message, and menu item — translated so it reads as if the app had been built in Turkish from the start. That's the standard I try to hold across everything I work on, whether it's a flight manual, an engineering document, or a piece of software. A few words about how I work: I grew up with Turkish and have been using English professionally for years, so shifting between formal technical register and natural conversational tone is second nature. I've also tended to land near the top in most things I've taken seriously — pilot school, engineering, officer training, commando courses. I mention it not to brag, but because that kind of discipline shows up in the work itself. I don't deliver half-finished things. If you need technical translation, technical writing, or app localization done properly in Turkish, I'd be glad to talk.

Last project: a multi-agent system that handles end-to-end case evaluation for a legal client, replacing what used to be hours of manual review. That's the kind of problem I like — turning a messy, manual workflow into a reliable automated system. I'm a Senior AI Engineer (5+ years) specializing in RAG pipelines, multi-agent architectures, and production LLM systems — from whiteboard to AWS deployment. Recent work: Built a multi-agent legal AI system — a conversational intake agent that evaluates cases and recommends outcomes in real time Designed a RAG pipeline over a dense regulatory corpus, cutting document retrieval time by 60%+ Built an e-commerce shopping agent (Amazon/eBay) using LLM-based intent classification — replacing hardcoded category logic with a dynamic query mapper Shipped scalable AI APIs handling thousands of daily requests at sub-200ms latency What I bring beyond code: I scope projects like a product engineer first — defining what "done" actually means (POC vs. production-ready) before writing a line of code. That means clearer expectations, fewer pivots, and timelines that hold. Stack: Languages: Python, Node.js LLM frameworks: LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI, Claude, HuggingFace, Ollama Vector DBs: Pinecone, Weaviate, ChromaDB, pgvector Agent frameworks: AutoGen, CrewAI, LangGraph Cloud & MLOps: AWS (SageMaker, Bedrock, Lambda, S3, EC2), Docker, FastAPI Databases: PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis Search: Elasticsearch, FAISS Bonus: I also work fluently across English, French, and Arabic — useful if your project involves multilingual content, MENA markets, or non-English document corpora. I work autonomously and communicate proactively — you'll know exactly where a project stands at every stage, with no surprises near a deadline. Content engineer hiring guide

Content engineers help teams turn growing content operations into structured systems that are easier to manage, reuse, validate, and publish across channels. Whether you need to migrate a product catalog to a new content management system (CMS), design reusable content types for a knowledge base, or implement validation rules for AI-assisted publishing workflows, hiring the right content engineer can reduce manual overhead and help content work more reliably at scale. If your project also requires upstream planning for what to publish and when, you may want to explore hiring a content strategist for complementary support.

What does a content engineer do?

A content engineer designs, builds, and maintains the infrastructure that makes content scalable, reusable, and operationally manageable. This includes defining content types and metadata fields, configuring CMS workflows, creating QA checklists for publishing readiness, building automation for repetitive tasks, and documenting systems so writers, editors, and developers can work efficiently.

Common deliverables include content model documentation, taxonomy and tagging rules, CMS field configurations, migration plans, workflow diagrams, validation rules, and handoff documentation. Depending on scope, a content engineer may collaborate with content strategists on editorial planning, SEO experts on search optimization, or internal development teams who handle technical integrations after handoff.

How to hire a content engineer on Upwork

Hiring a content engineer on Upwork follows a clear process: post a job describing your content systems and workflow needs, evaluate candidates based on relevant experience with similar builds, interview top choices, and finalize scope before work begins.

Step 1: Post a job

Start by describing your content environment, what you need built or improved, and your timeline. A strong job post includes:

  • Scope of work and specific deliverables, such as an audit, content model, CMS build, or migration

  • Systems involved, including CMS platforms, publishing tools, analytics, and automation tools

  • Content types and volume, such as product pages, knowledge base articles, or marketing assets

  • Timeline and urgency level

  • Budget preference, either hourly or fixed-price

  • Required experience with specific platforms or workflows

Use the Job Post Generator, powered by Uma™, Upwork's Mindful AI, to draft a customizable job post. Describe your project in a few sentences, and Uma will create a starting point you can refine. You can also review this job description template guide to structure your post around responsibilities, required skills, and deliverables.

Step 2: Evaluate candidates

Review proposals and shortlist candidates whose experience matches your content systems. Focus on:

  • Portfolio or case studies showing similar content builds, such as CMS configurations, migrations, or content models

  • Experience with your CMS platform or content type, such as product content, documentation, or marketing pages

  • Client reviews with feedback on documentation quality, communication, and handoff

  • Proposed approach in the proposal, including whether the freelancer identifies assumptions, risks, and validation steps

  • Availability and time zone overlap for stakeholder reviews or real-time troubleshooting

  • Job Success Score (JSS) and talent badges such as Top Rated or Expert-Vetted

Use Upwork's shortlist and comparison tools to organize candidates side-by-side before scheduling interviews.

Step 3: Interview your top choices

Interview your top candidates with a structured 20–30 minute agenda that validates systems thinking, documentation quality, and how the freelancer handles stakeholder coordination. During the interview:

  • Walk through your current content workflow and pain points

  • Ask how they would approach structuring content for reuse across channels

  • Discuss their QA process before content is published or migrated

  • Confirm their approach to documentation and team handoff

  • Clarify communication cadence and how they report progress

When available, use Instant Interviews to collect structured video responses early, then move the strongest candidates to a live discussion. For general interview guidance, see common interview questions. You can also use Upwork's built-in messaging, audio, and video tools to keep interview communication in one place.

Step 4: Agree on scope and begin work

Before work starts, finalize the contract in writing so scope, review points, communication expectations, and payment terms are clearly defined. Use funded milestones for fixed-price projects so payments are funded as project funds and released when deliverables are approved.

Before the project starts:

  • List final deliverables, what is included, and what is outside scope

  • Set milestones for fixed-price work or weekly expectations for hourly work

  • Define success criteria, such as validation tests, documentation standards, or migration completion

  • Confirm communication cadence, including update frequency and review checkpoints

  • Confirm payment terms, including milestone amounts or hourly expectations

  • Document the revision process and how change requests will be handled

FAQs about content engineers

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring a content engineer worth it?

Hiring a content engineer is often worth it when content has grown beyond one-off documents or pages into a system that requires structure, governance, and repeatability. According to Digital.gov, structured content uses metadata to tag content pieces with descriptive information, making content easier to find, reuse, and process across channels and applications.

Content engineering becomes especially valuable when you need to migrate content to a new CMS, support cross-channel publishing, implement content QA at scale, or prepare content for AI-assisted workflows. For a small, simple content request like a single landing page, the role may not be necessary; but for teams managing product catalogs, knowledge bases, or high-volume publishing, a content engineer can reduce manual effort and prevent costly rework.

How is a content engineer different from a content strategist?

A content strategist typically focuses on planning what content to publish, when to publish it, and how it supports business goals, including editorial calendars, SEO keyword planning, and audience research. A content engineer focuses on making content structured, reusable, and operationally scalable through content models, CMS workflows, metadata, and automation.

In practice, the roles often collaborate: the strategist defines the plan, and the engineer builds the system to execute it efficiently.

What tools do content engineers typically work with?

Content engineers commonly work with CMS platforms, such as WordPress, Contentful, or Drupal; structured data standards, such as Schema.org for search engine markup; metadata and taxonomy tools; workflow automation platforms; and QA validation tools. The specific toolset depends on your environment and publishing requirements.

What deliverables should I expect from a content engineering project?

As covered in the cost section, deliverables vary by project type. A workflow audit typically produces a findings report and recommendations. A content model project delivers content type definitions, metadata schemas, and documentation. A CMS build includes configured workflows, QA checklists, and handoff materials. A migration project includes a migration plan, validation rules, and a post-migration audit report.

Can a content engineer help with AI-assisted content workflows?

Content engineers can help prepare content for AI-assisted workflows by structuring content with clear metadata, validation rules, and quality checks. This may include defining structured outputs, building content verification processes, or integrating content systems with AI tools.

When scoping AI-related work, be specific about what you need, whether that is structured tagging, automation for content QA, or documentation for AI-readable content formats.
