I've been at this writing game for a long, long time--over 40 years, to be exact. I've won national writing contests, published books with small presses, been the "go-to" editor for fast-turnaround "quick books" at a major publisher, and, of course, helped dozens of individual writers to become better authors. I'm the pickiest of the picky, a crackerjack speller, and The Grammarian About Whom Your Mother Warned You. I do need to say here, however, because there have been MANY clients who don't understand this: I AM NOT A GHOSTWRITER. I have done ghostwriting in the past, but I don't do it anymore. So if you're looking for someone to write books for you, under your name...please .look elsewhere. :-) Other than that...if you want the best TLC your book can get, look no further. Having served as a professional editor and writer for more than ten years now, working with both fiction and nonfiction, my passion revolves around helping authors and publishers find the full potential of their manuscripts. My work is loosely split between working with indie authors and publishers, and so I also do work on blurbs, synopses, and queries, but only for works that I've edited or been directly involved in as a writing coach/consultant. In all tasks, though, I have an excellent eye for detail, and with my extended background as a writer and teacher, I can be depended upon to offer professional guidance at every turn, eliminate errors and inconsistencies, and meet all deadlines. By turns, I work as a writing coach, editor, and ghostwriter, matching my talents to my clients' needs. In each of these roles, I only take on projects that suit my skills--so, if you ask me to edit or write in a genre where I have no experience, I'll be the first to tell you I'm not your ideal fit. But, when I do take on a project, you can be sure that it will become a top priority and receive the attention and skill it deserves. When it comes to nonfiction, I'm got a varied background that crosses a variety of disciplines and types of writing. I've edited and copyedited a number of dissertations and academic articles within the humanities and sciences, and I've developed a close familiarity with details of grammar and citation styles (as I've worked as both a freelance copyeditor and as the assistant director of a university-level writing center). That said, academic work is no longer my focus, and you'll more often find me working on memoirs, self-help and business books, books related to health and wellness, and books that have some intersection with social justice, science/nature, current events, or culture. I've also worked on a number of books related to travel and history, as well as philosophy. In fiction, I have experience in various genres, including (but not limited to): science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, horror, suspense/thrillers, mystery, romance (of various subgenres, but especially paranormal, suspense, billionaire, dark, and contemporary), historical fiction, and literary fiction. My experience focuses on adult and YA material--I'm not the best fit for middle grade or children's books. Regarding editing, specifically: I've been freelancing on a full-time basis since August of 2014, and I love keeping an eclectic calendar so that I always have a fresh eye for each new manuscript. I track all work via Word's Track Changes feature, using the comments feature for feedback as needed. In terms of writing, I hire out as a fixer just as often as a writer--this means that I work through a complete novel, elevating the writing and 'fixing' issues that come up in relation to the story, character, pacing, genre, etc. Essentially, hiring me as a 'fixer' means that you've got a complete draft, and it's in decent shape, but you know it needs work and want it to reach the next level without your being directly involved in the revision. Many of my 'fixing' jobs come to me because an author needs to adjust word count up or down significantly, but is at a loss for how to do so without detracting from a project's quality or bringing in outside help. With nonfiction, I need to be 100% sure that I'm the right fit for a project before taking it on, so engaging in a detailed conversation ahead of hiring is always a must. My work in ghostwriting fiction has been focused around paranormals, suspense, romance, horror, SFF, and nonfiction, and I only hire out as a ghostwriter for adult work (vs YA). Lastly, I often serve as a writing coach, helping authors complete their first full manuscript or finish a project that's been languishing on their desktop for years. I take an immense amount of pride in my track record for helping first-time writers succeed as writers, and limit the number of coaching clients I take on at any given time in order to make sure I'm available on short-notice for meetings, crises, and content reviews/edits. This process looks different for every client and project, as I tailor my approach to each individual and job, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions about how it might best work for you.PoetryEditing & ProofreadingCreative WritingFiction WritingAcademic WritingBook WritingProofreadingGhostwritingContent EditingNovelWritingLine EditingDevelopmental EditingCopy Editing - $48 hourly

For me, words are only the juice, the fruit cannot be spoken of. If you are looking for great words, words that echo far beyond the mind and linger within you, then the words must be only a by-product; a fragrance which emanates from some indescribable place. In other words, there are lots of technically good writers, but very few inspired ones. Which one am I? Both, I hope. But only you can find out. Writing has been my passion since I could pick up a pen. For many years this expressed itself primarily through music and lyrics. As I got older, however, I began to write stories, poems and essays. Over the last few years I have authored two books - fiction and non-fiction. My love of music has never waned and I continue to write, produce and perform my own songs. Although my love of writing lies in its creative freedom, I have a deep interest in style and structure. Rigour and pith should enhance poetic licence, not stifle it. I am always learning, always gathering new tools, and always a beginner. Writing is an extension of my life. My love of philosophy, meditation, spirituality and the essence of things provides a constant flow of creative energy. I spend a lot of time travelling with my girlfriend, two year old son and dog. I love surfing, cooking, and living as freely as possible. For better or worse, I fought formal education as though it was my mortal enemy. Life education, however, I embraced with wide-eyed wonder and still do. This, I feel, has allowed me to discover my own voice and unique knowledge base. I can help you or your project do the same - all we have to do is find that inner fruit and squeeze it.PoetryRapStorytellingBlog ContentChildren's WritingEditing & ProofreadingContent WritingDevelopmental EditingBook EditingLyrics WritingSingingMusicSongwritingCreative Writing - $75 hourly

As a teacher of writing for many years, I have perfected my skills in a variety of genre and topics and am able to fill several writing niches. Here is an overview of the many services I offer: A. Children’s Rhyming Stories While we are on the subject of poetry, one of my skills which I especially enjoy performing is writing children’s stories in rhyming verse. Most of my stories teach a moral lesson or educate. The characters I create are unique and engaging for young audiences. I currently provide stories for a number of children’s publishing companies. B. Poetry I write special occasion and “gift” poems. Just tell me what you want included in your poem and give me a deadline; I’m on it! You wouldn’t believe some of the things people have hired me to write poems about; I once wrote a beautiful tribute to an ink pen. Yes, an ink pen! Just imagine what I can create for you to mark your special occasion or to honor a loved one! You will find my poetry creative and original. I do not tolerate triteness in my verse. One client used the word “phenomenal” to describe my poetry on command skills. See what you think. C. Ghostwriting Do you need help telling your story or writing your memoirs? I can turn your thoughts into an engaging work of art you will be proud of. D. Christian/Faith Based Articles I am a lifelong Christian Believer and student of the Word. I even minored in Bible at a Christian University. I currently write articles for several Christian websites and publications. I write inspirational pieces as well as exegetical. My background as a mother, public school teacher, and Sunday school teacher has given me the necessary skills to write on a child’s level when commissioned to do so, as well. I have a clear and mature understanding of Scripture and always supply “book, chapter, and verse” support for what I write. I may expound, but the Holy Spirit is the Final Word in any matter. E. English Language Arts Educational Materials I am a certified secondary ELA teacher with 30 years of experience. I have taught all diversified learning levels from special education up through senior year Advanced Placement. I write lesson plans, curriculum, assessments, literary reviews, and preparatory materials for national and state exams such as A.P. Language, A.P. Literature, SAT, ACT, etc. F. General Common Interest Articles Some of my work includes articles on current events, informational materials for non-profit and other organizations, op-ed pieces, etc. I am happy to write articles requiring a little research, but I may have to command a higher rate for such pieces, of course, depending upon the depth and scope of research required. Disclaimer: In the interest of transparency, I will tell you that if you are seeking a technical writer, I am not the droid you are looking for. I never learned to program a VCR. If you are young and don’t know what that is, Google it. We have many talented technical writers here at UpWork, however, so you will have no problem finding someone to “satisfy that niche,” if you have it. You don’t want me to write articles about how to manage stock portfolios or instruction in auto mechanics, either. We would both be disappointed with the results. I will not do your homework for you, so don’t bother to forward to me your teacher/professor’s instructions for your latest assignment. On the other hand, I would be happy to take a look at what you have written and serve as an extra pair of eyes to look it over for grammar/usage/mechanics errors and to make stylistic suggestions for revision. G. Editing See paragraph above. H. Book Reviews I’d love to read your work and write a blurb for the cover! If I can’t say anything nice, I won’t take your money. Deal? I hope you have enjoyed reading my profile overview. More importantly, I hope you have discovered that I am the most suitable candidate to fill your freelancing needs. If not, keep searching through the UpWork files. I have no doubt you will find the right person for your job! You may scroll to my general resume information to see where I have worked in the brick and mortar world, where I went to school, yadda yadda. Reviews and Feedback from some of my other clients are also on this page. I invite you to peruse my portfolio to see a small sampling of my work.
