I'm a grant writer who specializes in SBIR and STTR proposal, the federal, non-dilutive R&D funding that lets startups, inventors, and deep-tech founders commercialize their technology without giving up equity. I've written for NIH, NSF, and DoD/Navy solicitations. Top Rated, 100% Job Success, 5.0 across every engagement. Most of my clients have the hard part already solved: real technology, real data, a genuine breakthrough. What stands between them and the funding is a proposal that has to do two things at once satisfy strict federal compliance rules to the letter, and make a technical innovation legible and compelling to evaluators who may not share the founder's expertise. That's the gap I close. What I do: - SBIR/STTR Phase I proposals — technical volume authoring, cost volume construction, and budget structuring that stays within agency caps (including Base/Option splits where required). - Federal submission compliance — formatting, page and font limits, and multi-volume requirements verified against official agency instructions (DoD DSIP, Grants.gov, and agency-specific portals). - Technical writing & consultation — turning complex science and software into clear, evaluator-ready narratives. Recent work includes documentation and consultation for AI software, plus invention and patent-stage application writing. Recent highlight: I led a complete Navy SBIR Phase I submission for a GPS-denied timing-correction software technology, authoring the technical and cost volumes, engineering the Base/Option budget within Navy caps, bringing all seven required DSIP volumes to 100% compliance, and supporting the client through certification and on-time submission under real deadline pressure. The client endorsed the work as committed to quality, accountable for outcomes, and detail-oriented. How I work: I start with the solicitation and its evaluation criteria, flag eligibility or compliance disqualifiers before they cost you, then build a submission-ready package narrative, budget, and attachments with a clear checklist so nothing slips before the deadline. If you have an SBIR/STTR or federal R&D opportunity coming up, message me with the solicitation number and the due date. I'll give you an honest read on fit and exactly how I'd approach it. With three degrees under my belt, a PhD and Master's in Creative Writing as well as a Bachelor's in English Literature, I have a deep understanding of the craft of writing. With my decade plus of experience, I have achieved a high level of mastery over the English language. Here on Upwork, I aim to use those skills to help others tell their stories, whether that means ghostwriting a novel so your killer plot idea springs to life, or simply sharpening the wordplay and catching any errors in your final draft! I have completed jobs here on everything from an edit of an AI Technology book, to Business/Marketing project proofreading, to fantasy novel editing, and even slice-of-life romance script reviews. I’m sure I can help you take your work to the next level. Thank you for considering me for your project!

From 2007 to 2017 I was the owner of the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, which published 40 books for total distribution of over 20,000 copies. Along the way, CCLaP's books won or were finalists for a half-dozen awards, including the Pushcart Prize, the Lambda Award for LGBTQ literature, and the Independent Publisher Book Award; and the center itself was named one of the 10 best indie presses in the United States by both BookRiot and Poets & Writers magazine. Now I bring that same award-winning deep experience to your own self-published or small-press manuscript, helping you hone it with a fine knife into the best book it can possibly be. I currently offer three services as a freelancer, the first and main one being editing. I provide not only developmental editing (helping you identify “big picture” problems regarding the story, characters, dialogue, information logic, and more) but also copy editing (including a close-in technical pass for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage, also sometimes known as “line editing” or “content editing”) and post-production proofreading (where I review not only the text but also all the book parts, such as headers and footers, the title page and synopsis, etc.). I charge half a cent per word for proofreading, 1 cent per word for either developmental or copy editing, or a bundled discount of 1.5 cents per word for all three. Secondly, I offer graphic design of your book’s interior pages. If you have specific ideas beforehand of what you’d like included, I’m happy to incorporate those wishes; or otherwise we work in an iterative process, where I present you multiple options as far as layout style and typeface choices, and over several back-and-forth discussions we whittle things down to a design you love. For books of less than 500 pages/100,000 words with no tables, I charge a flat $300 for the entire process, plus provide EPUB and Kindle ebook versions for free; please drop me a line if you have a bigger or more complicated book. (My apologies, but I do not offer cover design as a freelance service.) And thirdly, I offer help as a story coach, which you can think of as a creative writing college course but with only one student, you. I meet up with you at whatever frequency works best, review the latest work, give you pointers on where to go next, help you brainstorm ideas, and serve as an accountability partner during mental blocks. You determine exactly what kind of help would work best for you, and the maximum amount of hours I should work per week, at a rate of $30 per hour. See my portfolio section at the bottom of the page for a broad selection of testimonials from authors I've worked with as a freelancer, and praise my books have garnered over the years from such publications as Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, the Chicago Tribune, HTMLGIANT, and more. Proud member of: American Copy Editors Society Romance Writers of America (fellow RWA members get a discount; write for more) Chicago-North Romance Writers ANTI-AI PLEDGE: I promise that all work I complete for clients has been, and will always be, accomplished using only my human brain and ten human fingers, never using AI bots, Grammarly, or other software options.

I am an award-winning writer whose work has appeared traditionally published anthologies and top tier magazines. I now proudly provide ghostwriting, publishing, writing coaching, and publishing consulting services. My clients include Fortune 500 executive coaches and consultants, Inc. 5000 CEOs and founders, household name celebrities, regular contributors to top-of-industry websites like Forbes and KevinMD, small business owners, and ordinary people with extraordinary stories to tell. While I provide services to CEOs and celebrities, I also strive to keep my services accessible to small businesses and ordinary people. My prices for full book production including ghostwriting and publishing range from $3,000-$10,000, and I believe based on years of working with various publishers that my services are the best in my accessible price range. I know that everyone has at least one book in them, and personal and family memoirs are near and dear to my heart. My most unique background as a writer is that I also have a strong background in science and medicine, including five years' experience coordinating clinical research and a B. S. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan. I have assisted physician-scientists, physician-entrepreneurs, healthcare companies, and biohackers with publicity and educational books for this reason.
