Mert Güncüer was born in 1991 in Burhaniye, a district of Balıkesir. He started his undergraduate education at Bilkent University in 2009. He entered the Department of Communication and Design in 2010. During this period, he participated in various festivals with the films he shot with the film crew called Vis-à-vis, which he founded with his friends. Vis-à-Vis received the “Best Music” and “Best Editing” awards for the films “Sahne/Soul” and “Grey” they shot as part of the Istanbul 48 Hours Film Festival in 2013 and 2014. After making short films and various video projects in Turkey for a while after his education, he went to Slovenia in 2015 to make his own projects. He worked with filmmakers from various countries for 6 months in Slovenia. Returning to Turkey in August of the same year, Güncüer worked with Ankara State Theater for 3 seasons between 2015 and 2017. In 2019, he completed his master's degree at Başkent University, Radio, TV, Cinema Department, by giving his thesis on "Balkanism" in Emir Kusturica Cinema. He participated in various festivals both in Turkey and abroad with the short films he made between 2013 and 2020. In 2020, he was awarded the "Special Jury - Best Cinematography" award by Europe Film Festival U.K with his film "Timeless Zamanlar". He took part in the "Shorts from Turkey" film market selection prepared for the 43rd Clermont Ferrand Film Festival with his "Tomorrow & Tomorrow" Film he shot for the Sabancı Foundation Short Film Competition in 2021.
