I'm a screenwriter, ghostwriter, script consultant, and screenplay editor. My consultations help screenwriters improve the dialogue, character development, plot, and pacing of their scripts. I can also guide those who are struggling to understand the often opaque formatting rules. I wrote and produced the indie features "Surviving Family" (starring Billy Magnussen and Phyllis Somerville) and "Detours" (starring Tara Westwood, Richard Kind, and Paul Sorvino). Both movies are available on Apple TV, The Roku Channel, TubiTV, Plex, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Hoopla Digital. I wrote the screenplay for the upcoming feature "Alison," which is based on a true story and currently in pre-production. ,

Here to help take your script or idea to the next level! With a decade’s worth of experience as a script reader for companies such as The Black List, Andrew Lauren Productions, The Donners’ Company, Coverfly, Shore Scripts, and many more, I bring extensive knowledge of scriptwriting to any project. Working in development has allowed me to understand what makes a project stand out and how to get it to the point of selling. Whether that be editing your project, providing feedback, or adding my own writing to your idea, I will be happy to be a collaborative partner and add complete professionalism from start to finish. Having spent a long period of my career in development, I have shifted my focus more toward my own writing. This has allowed me to see tremendous success in my own projects, with my psychological thriller, THRESHOLD, ranking in the top lists on The Black List for the genre. It has received glowing reviews, calling it “hard to put down,” “leaves us on the edge of our seats,” and one reader stated that “Because this script is so well written, it feels as if it could be a strong calling card for the writer.” Outside of my own writing, I have also helped numerous clients ghostwrite and punch up their scripts. This work has spanned all different genres and mediums, from noir to comedy to thrillers and dramas, including work in TV, Film, Podcasts, and YouTube. I am a highly adaptable writer and have the right experience to make any project stand out. Feel free to reach out anytime with questions about rate or turnaround times. Thanks for reading, and I hope to work together soon!

I'm a highly-experienced scriptwriter, editor and TV, film and video producer with a track record of writing and producing projects that attract an audience and get results. I specialize in explainers, corporate films, non-profit videos, TV series, and other message-driven content. I was the creator and EP of the documentary series "NHL Trophy Case" for NHL Network, and was the producer, director, and writer for the series "Cash Cab" on Discovery Channel, which became one of the most successful TV series of the 2000s. I won three Emmy Awards for my work on that series. I've also produced reality series for MTV, MSNBC and others. I've produced and written videos and short films for corporations, non-profits, and other organizations such as Apple, Informatica, Palo Alto Networks, SoftServe Infragistics, Humane Society of the United States, CP Capital, University of Redlands, and dozens of other start-ups, brands and other organizations. I specialize in clever - sometimes comedic - wording and concepts, I know how to create and build a message-driven video, and have deep production knowledge as well as a large list of connections in the industry. I work closely with clients to create and develop concepts, write video scripts, design storyboards and then produce, direct and ultimately deliver highly effective videos and films. I'm incredibly talented, driven, and have a unique background that can make your project rise above the others. I look forward to working with you.

I am an award-winning screenwriter, story development consultant, and script analyst with more than a decade of professional experience helping writers, producers, and studios take projects from rough idea to production-ready script. I specialise in emotionally rich, character-driven stories for film, TV, audio drama, games, animation, and branded content. My work spans everything from contained indie dramas and true-story adaptations to animated explainers, murder mystery games, and high-concept genre pieces. Some quick credentials: • MA Screenwriting (Distinction, UWE) and BA Film Production (First Class, UCA) • Founder of Script Lighthouse, providing story development to clients worldwide • Script reader and analyst for organisations such as the BFI, ScriptUp, Script Studio, Unsolicited Scripts, The Pitch Film Fund, The Film Exchange, and Sheffield Global Cinema Festival • Experience with production companies including Wrong Dimension Productions, Moose Alley Films, Pood Studio, Red Amber, Soul Sentinel Productions, Tasnim Creates, Spiral Media, and more • Multiple awards, including Filmarket Hub’s Project of the Month and Best Screenplay at 48HFP Amsterdam On Upwork, I typically help clients with: • Script development and rewrites Taking a draft that is “almost there” and shaping it into a tighter, more emotionally satisfying script with clear structure, sharper dialogue, and stronger character arcs. • Script coverage and in-depth notes Professional reader-style reports covering premise, structure, character, theme, tone, pacing, dialogue, and market positioning, with precise, practical recommendations. • Book-to-screen adaptation Translating novels, memoirs, and true stories into cinematic screenplays or series bibles that preserve the heart of the original while working for screen. • Concept development and beat sheets Helping you clarify your idea, build a robust spine (logline, premise, theme, character journeys), and map out a scene-by-scene outline. • Explainer, animation, and e-learning scripts Crafting narrative-driven scripts and storyboards that make complex ideas clear, engaging, and visually playable for animation teams and clients. Clients often tell me they value my ability to: • Quickly understand what they are trying to say and why it matters • Offer honest but tactful feedback that respects their voice • Find solutions that are both creatively exciting and practically achievable • Bring a calm, organised, collaborative presence to the process Whether you need a full script, a page-one rewrite, detailed coverage on a draft, or a development partner to help shape a project over time, I would be happy to help. Send me a brief description of your project, what you are hoping to achieve, and where you are in the process, and we can work out the best way forward.

I am a screenwriter, video game writer, tv creator, and a Fellow of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. I wrote the indie sci-fi film Embers and the Netflix Original sci-fi feature IO and have created shows for AMC, Apple+, and Annapurna. I've written an upcoming indie video game, and I’m also an EP and writer on the Polish series WILK, airing on Canal+. I love character-driven genre storytelling, sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural world-building, and I am committed to diversity in my writing, as evidenced by my work. I have a lot of experience with the collaborative writing process, enjoy working with a narrative team, and I'm great at getting to the heart of notes and executing them efficiently. I'd be delighted to share writing samples.

I was called down to Paramount off my very first spec script. At the time, Star Trek allowed 50 people a year to come to the William S. Hart building and pitch ideas. To earn that pitch, I beat thousands of other writers with my spec submission. I've been writing ever since. I give seminars at Universities and in Los Angeles for organizations like Colab. I've won pitching contests and excel at synopsis and loglines. I've also produced films for Netflix, Eone, Lionsgate, and MGM. I'm a writer at heart, and because of that I have a Facebook Group called "Screenwriter Networking," with over 70 thousand members. Experienced writers know that writing is not a science, it's an art. You can't rely on structure but it's a wonderful guardrail. Structure is a guide. Your story needs to elicit emotion from the audience. Showrunners and Directors believe they can be writers because they've studied how to follow some "structure recipe". That is only the first step to becoming a writer. Let me show you. There are levels beyond story structure. Call them tools. There's a psychology behind writing. (It was the best of times, it was the worst of times) There's subtext, subverting audience expectation, hooks and cliffhangers, sympathy for characters or the ghosts that haunt them, story plants and payoffs, foreshadowing, dramatic irony, mid-point shift, a time crunch with high stakes, objective correlative and the list goes on. Story creators today seem to have forgotten these tools in favor of a structure recipe. Don't rely on cheap tropes and imitation. Good writing requires just a little insight to achieve much more.

Screenwriter hiring guide

A screenwriter transforms concepts into compelling scripts across film, television, web series, and video games — bringing together story structure, dialogue mastery, and format expertise that elevates visual projects. Whether you need someone to adapt existing intellectual property (IP), polish a draft, write episodic content, or develop an original screenplay, professional screenwriters combine creative vision with industry-standard formatting to deliver production-ready scripts.

What does a screenwriter do?

A screenwriter creates written content for films, television shows, web series, and other visual media. They develop original stories or adapt existing works, focusing on dialogue, character development, and scene descriptions using industry-standard formatting.

Professional screenwriters work in specialized areas: some focus on original screenplays, some adapt novels or true stories, and others specialize in improving existing drafts. They collaborate closely with producers, directors, and other stakeholders through multiple revision rounds to ensure proper formatting and pacing.

Screenwriters, as well as screenplay writers, may also offer ghostwriting services for clients who have a solid idea but lack the technical skills to bring it to fruition. Their work involves research, brainstorming, outlining, writing multiple drafts, and incorporating feedback.

They work on feature films, television series, web series, short films, commercials, corporate videos, video game narratives, and YouTube content.

How to hire a screenwriter on Upwork

Upwork can help you find, vet, hire, and collaborate with screenwriters at all experience levels and from all over the world. You only need to follow these four simple steps.

Step 1: Create a targeted job post

A well-crafted job post helps qualified screenwriters find your project as they search for work. In your post:

  • Use a keyword rich title like “Screenwriter needed for TV comedy pilot”

  • Define how much creative control you want to maintain and what the collaboration will look like

  • Share your target audience and intended distribution platform

  • Write a concise treatment or synopsis, considering genre, tone, and themes

  • Provide basic logistics such as timeline and budget

To create a tailored job post quickly, try the Job Post Generator powered by Uma™, Upwork’s Mindful AI. Describe what you need in a few sentences, and Uma will craft a job post in seconds. You can also review screenwriter job description templates for ideas and inspiration.

Step 2: Evaluate candidates

As proposals come in, you’ll want to review them in a way that is thorough and efficient.

  • Have Uma give instant video interviews and side-by-side comparisons

  • Use Upwork’s filters to find candidates by rate, location, and experience

  • Review proposals for signs that the candidate has understood your job post and has the skills to meet your needs

  • Review portfolios looking for past work that allows you to assess their writing style and ability to match your creative vision

Step 3: Interview top candidates

A quick video interview gives you the chance to ask any questions you have left for your top choices, and to get a feel for what a collaboration with them might be like.

  • Schedule and conduct interviews within Upwork messaging to get instant transcripts and summaries from Uma

  • Have the candidate walk you through a piece from their portfolio, focusing on how their aesthetic choices met the needs of the client

  • Discuss their interpretation of your project concept and story direction

  • Ask about their writing process and typical timeline for similar projects

  • Evaluate responsiveness, communication style, and openness to feedback

If you’re unfamiliar with interviewing freelancers, you can refer to common interview questions to help keep your conversations focused and productive.

Step 4: Agree on scope and begin work

Once you’ve found the right person, you can send a contract directly through the Upwork marketplace. A solid contract protects both parties and helps collaborations be successful from beginning to end.

  • Use Upwork's contract workroom, messaging, and payment protection for secure collaboration

  • Choose fixed-price contracts for projects with clear deliverables, such as writing a single short podcast episode

  • Separate complex projects into clear milestones, such as researching, drafting, and revising multiple episodes

  • Choose hourly contracts for ongoing work or projects without clear deliverables, such as writing for an ongoing series

  • Document intellectual property ownership in the contract

Once the contact begins, be sure to give the freelancer everything they need to succeed, including brand or style guidelines, scripts from previous episodes to study or emulate, and formatting requirements.

FAQs about screenwriters

Frequently asked questions

Is hiring a screenwriter worth it?

Yes, when your project requires industry-standard formatting, compelling dialogue, strong story structure, or production-ready scripts, hiring a professional screenwriter is a solid investment. Professional screenwriters understand three-act structure, character arc development, and format specifications — potentially saving thousands in production costs by delivering scripts that cast, crew, and financiers can immediately work with.

What's the difference between a screenwriter and scriptwriter?

Screenwriter typically refers specifically to film and television writers, while scriptwriter can include scripts for theater, radio, video games, and other media.

How long does a screenplay project typically take?

A short film script (10-15 pages) typically takes 1-2 weeks, while a feature screenplay (90-120 pages) generally requires 4-8 weeks for a first draft, plus revision time. TV pilots generally take 3-6 weeks.

What should I look for in a screenwriter's portfolio?

In a screenwriter’s portfolio, look for writing samples in your target genre and format, proper screenplay formatting, strong natural dialogue, and clear scene descriptions. Completed projects that made it to production and client testimonials mentioning communication skills and meeting deadlines are also relevant.
