    When I found Clinical Research, I was only looking for a stepping stone bachelor’s degree with which to decorate my medical school application. Instead, I found a passion that just keeps growing with every patient and family that chooses hope in the face of unsurmountable odds. Here are 5 things this field has taught me. 1) During my internship at Intrepid Spirit Concussion Recovery Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, I learned that my exhaustively researched literature reviews and carefully crafted protocols were only as important as they were helpful to the service members who believed in us enough to put their name on the consent form. I adapted my writing style to better serve my IRB and my potential patients. 2) As a freshly graduated Clinical Research Coordinator with the Ashland Bellefonte Cancer Centers in rural Kentucky, I learned that the fortune is in the follow-up. I repaired waning relationships with CROs and sponsors, initiated an education campaign for our current patients, and set out to actively listen to the misgivings of our local community. We rebuilt trust and grew our network considerably. 3) By the time I was promoted to the Head of Clinical Research I learned that in order for employees to do their part, they must understand the system as a whole. I implemented and improved processes that cleared up years of data backlog, increased profits three-fold, and landed us contracts with the largest pharmaceutical companies in our cancer centers’ history. 4) When the military moved us to Texas, I became the youngest Texas Oncology area office manager in memory and immediately set about streamlining my 5 high traffic oncology offices. I learned that turnover is an arrow in the heart of an organization. I initiated a training program focused on increasing ability and decreasing burn out, revamped our outdated procedures, and exponentially increased morale resulting in the lowest loss of employees in years. 5) On our next military move, I found a biotech startup that was focused on increasing access to clinical trials for communities. I learned to leverage strategic community partnerships for the good of all. I refined our marketing plan, increased our outreach, and rallied our small team resulting in a marked increase in community engagement and involvement. 6) Throughout my career I learned to only promise what I could deliver, and always deliver more than I promised. I have saved programs, saved jobs, and just maybe saved lives by always choosing to do the most good possible and teaching my teams to do the same.
